We stayed at Park Royal Cozumel from May 24-29. We had a fantastic time. The hotel was beautiful and very clean. There was always hotel staff cleaning something. The walkways were a bit uneven throughout but manageable, possibly difficult for those with a handicap just to keep in the back of your mind. The food was all presented very well with tons of variety, yes even for picky eaters. There was a room available with free unlimited internet access. There was a gym with nice equipment that you had to pay additionally to use and a spa on site. It seems to me that you should pay a fee for the internet and get to use the gym for free, but that’s just me. There was a 2.00 per day charge to use the safe in your room. (Kind of odd to pay for a safe, but we did)
Daily meals at the buffet were fresh fruit, some authentic varieties, oatmeal, and sweet breads and made to order omelets plus much, much more. You certainly won’t go hungry. Lunch we only ate a few times in the buffet and they had plenty of variety as well. We spent most of our afternoons by the pools on the ocean side and indulged in the hamburgers and chips at the snack bar. We ate once at the Italian and once at the Mexican restaurant. Both restaurants were just okay, neither one over the top but still good. The restaurants were adults only; however at the Mexican restaurant there was a family with a small child, so I guess the rules only apply to some. You do have to make reservations daily between 12 and 3. You can either call or go down to the restaurant. It is a bit of an inconvenience, but not a big deal……honestly where do you have to be you’re on vacation. Overall the food was great. One of the people we travelled with had a tree nut and shellfish allergy and she managed just fine. The hotel does not allow any food in the hotel rooms, so no room service.
Every day that your room is cleaned you get two bottles of water per day and if you want more you can either buy it at the sundry shop or refill your bottles down by the bar. The alcoholic drinks were made excellent with topshelf alcohol, not like some all inclusive places. The margaritas were my favorite. Dos XX was the only beer on tap, yummy with a lime. The people were always ready to serve and to serve with a smile. There were three pool bars, two at the infinity pool on the ocean side and one on the main grounds. The pools were always clean with plenty of room, chairs were always available and no the hot tubs are not hot. The grounds layout is on two sides of the street. The hotel rooms, main lobby, buffet and restaurants, one large pool and snack bar on one side of the street with a walkway that goes under the street leading to the beach with two infinity pools on either side, both equipt with bars. The bars open around 11:00. The beach is really small but has lounge chairs and palapas. So if you are a beach walker this hotel is not for you. The beach is more of a lagoon than a beach and it sprawls out to the ocean with great snorkeling. It serves its purpose! You can snorkel right out of the lagoon with some amazing sites to see. We also took a snorkeling tour. 2 of us snorkeled and 2 went diving. I was a snorkeler so I can’t comment on the diving other than they said they felt safe. While on the snorkeling tour we saw amazing fish, 2 eagle rays, barracuda and some starfish among many other colorful fish. The diving/snorkeling is right next door and the boat leaves off of the same pier as the resort.
The horizon is blocked by a cruise ship, but there wasn’t one there every day and to be honest when there wasn’t one there it seemed like something was missing. It was kind of neat to see the ships come in. That was this specific hotels uniqueness.
One thing I would say was a negative was we wanted to book an excursion to the ruins and we spoke to a man who said when we were ready to talk to him. When we were talking to him he told us the excisions they had and then after we were ready to book, he said I can get you a better deal, ½ price if you go to the 70 minute timeshare presentation. Well now ½ prices sounds better, but we didn’t want to go to the presentation, so we canned the idea and didn’t do anything. We just wanted to book with the concierge which we thought he was. In their defense we didn’t look any further, so we don’t know if there was one to book with or not.
I can see how the hotel may get crowded during busier months, but we happened to go at a great time and enjoyed every minute with nothing to complain about. We would return and plan to without reservation.
