Park Royal was a great deal and a great value. I would recommend this place for active travelers that love the sun, snorkeling/scuba, ease of all-inclusive without the pickiness of fine cuisine and those that don't plan on spending a huge amount of time in their rooms.
Visited from 3/30/08 - 4/4/08. The weather was near perfect everyday, no rain, everyday was partial clouds rolling by from the trade winds. The temp was mid-80's F, nights were low 60's F.
The resort has some quirks (don't they all?). These might help other travelers.
1. The lights don't activate until you put your door key into a switchbox next to the front door.
2. They always ask for your room number for nearly everything (why still not sure).
3. Very quick to clean away plates/dishes and reset the table for the next guest, but you really need to ask for your drinks (sometimes more than once) don't expect them to refill drinks without being asked. Very different - just be prepared to always ask for them.
4. The shower's hot/cold turns opposite of what you would expect. Point the bottom of the lever to the hot for hot and cold for cold, not the top of the lever.
Quick Tips:
1. Bring your own insulated cups, -less trips to the bar, more time in the sun
2. Tips really help the service
3. Get to the beach/pool early for prime lounge chair spaces near shade or palapa
4. Don’t expect to buy too much at the resort
5. Bring sunscreen/aloe
The great things about this resort. :-)
Room: (we had double-oceanview balcony) was really nicely appointed. Granite everywhere, rain shower, modern fixtures, nice television, awesome view, great balcony. The room was very clean and they were quick to have it available each day. The linens were average.
Location: You can't beat the proximity to several dive operators. The resort has promotions with aquaworld (www.aquaworld.com.mx) that operated right next door. There were several others within proximity. The snorkeling right off the resorts beach was great. I went nearly every day and saw a wide variety of animals (cuttlefish, spotted moray eel, toadfish, plus tons of usual suspects). The water is bath water warm and depth is about 2ft to 30 ft with several corals.
Food: I am a vegetarian (not vegan), so no comment on the meat selection. I was very impressed with the huge selection to eat at the buffet restaurant. Every night was a theme and every night I had a very wide selection. The food was very fresh and delicious. I have been to MX a few times and they had the freshest food of all resorts. We went to the Italian one night and it looked from the menu to have the most offered.
So, so things about the resort. :-|
Overall cleanliness: The rooms were really clean and there never were any issues there. The resort grounds, chairs, tables and counters needed more thorough of a cleaning. There were minor items like water rings on the tables, beach chairs would have food bits from one day to the next and the cobblestone paths made it seem dirty.
Nightly entertainment: It was great that there was a nightly show. Some of the material was a bit off-color and the dancers were off some nights with their routines. They definitely had a lot of routines to remember so it was understandable.
Overall friendliness: I have gotten this impression over most of the resorts I have visited in MX, so Park Royal wasn’t the exception. The friendliness sometimes isn’t genuine and it seems to be more to garner tips or to sell something.
Checkin: Previous postings noted the slow service, but our experience was pretty good – but we didn’t have any issues. I think it stems from the overwhelming amount of paperwork that they create for themselves.
Worst things about the resort: :-(
Mobility: Not a resort designed for easy walking/wheelchairs/walkers. Anyone that might have trouble moving should consider someplace else.
