My wife and I stayed at the Park Royal from 3/28/08 to 4/4/08. We selected this resort for it's all-inclusiveness and as a last minute deal, so though it may not have been our first choice, we were very happy with the overall experience.
The property, grounds, rooms and restaurants were all very clean and well-kept. The beach itself is small, but the area around the beach is wonderful - infinity pools and hot tubs (well, lukewarm tubs) on both sides and both with swim-up bars. I enjoyed what I've dubbed the sunset happy hour every night - especially the night Alex served us the GMFs! We realized early on that you really had to get to the beach by 7 am if you want to reserve a space - though I was usually up by this time, I never reserved a spot and only once or twice had difficulty finding shade later in the day (if you want to sit in the sun, there's always a spot available).
Food was hit or miss, but I could always find something tasty. Loved the omelettes in the morning, the fresh fruit juices, grouper and snapper in the Caribbean restaurant and, after a few mid-afternoon drinks, a burger with all the fixings from the beachfront grill. Ernesto's next door had good fajitas and was a nice change of scenery once night for dinner.
There seemed to be far fewer organized activities at Park Royal than at other resorts we've stayed at. It's so close to town that I really got the impression that they encouraged you to leave the property to a) drink less of their liquor and b) pump more money into the local economy. There's a club on the property opened until 2 am, and it seemed to have a fair amount of activity most nights. The bartenders there are great and the DJ was very accommodating. There are many, many off-site activities so if you're bored it's your own fault.
One of my favorite parts of the resort was meeting other guests. We made friends easily, talked with folks at the swim-up bar, had some meals with our new friends and even ended up renting our jeep with two people that we had met. (Monica, Lynn, Ken & Sandy, Todd & Rhonda, Mark & Christina, Shawn, Bev, Meg - if you'd like a link to our pics just drop me (Don) a line).
In short, the Park Royal is what you make it. If you're looking for things to disappoint you, then you will be disappointed. If you go in with an open mind and an adventurous attitude you'll have a great time.
