My best friend from college and I spent a week in Cozumel at the Park Royal Resort. We booked and paid in advance through Expedia in January because they said we would be upgraded to a Junior Suite. Well, apparently Expedia doesn't tell the hotel that they entice customers in this way because when we checked in they had no idea what we were talking about and needless to say we did not get our upgrade. So, as I might stay at the Park Royal again, I will never book through Expedia again.

The hotel was very clean and the food in the restaurants was excellent. The Caribeno restaurant had a grouper martinique which was absolutely to die for. The also had a Red Snapper Creole that was superb as well. The Mexican restaurant was very good as well. The fajitas were excellent. We did not eat in the Italian restaurant. The buffet was good. I always found something that I liked. The fish at the buffet was always fresh and delicious. Breakfast at the buffet offered many selections. The made to order Huevos Rancheros were really good!!

You have to get up early (like 7am) and go and get your towels to reserve chairs at the pool or the beach, which is very, very small. Lots of people snorkled as there were lots of interesting fish to look at.

We went during Spring Break - we are 40 somethings - who were spring breakers 20 years ago - and I would say that if you are a family traveling with children that you should stay away during this time. Lots of drunk and inappropriate college students at the pool during the day. I sense that when it is not spring break it is a very relaxing place to stay. The sidewalks and walking areas are very uneven so if you have difficulty walking or are in a wheel chair, this is not the place for you. It would be very difficult to get around. All in all, the hotel was nice and clean. We also asked for a non-smoking room, and did not receive it. They looked at up like we were a little crazy when we said something. We asked if they could spray some kind of deodorizer and they said yes, but id did not take away the constant smell of smoke. I would probably go somewhere else before coming back to Cozumel or this hotel.

  • Liked — The restaurants were very good.
  • Disliked — Lots of SPring Breakers and smokers of pipes, cigars and cigarettes everywhere.

Our family of four (2 adults, 2 teenagers) stayed @ the Park Royal from Mar 7/08 - Mar 15/08 we were suppose to leave Fri. Mar 14/08 our flight had been cancelled due to mechanical problems needless to say we weren't too upset that we had to stay an extra day. Our representative was Freddie from Funjet he did a great job in negotiating our extra day at the hotel he always kept us informed as to what was going on and funjet customers were the first to get their rooms for the extra night. Many thanks to Freddie and Park Royal for extra special service.

This hotel is beautiful, well kept, extremely clean. The walkways are uneven especially for people with special needs. This is not something women should be walking on in high heels which is what some were doing and complaining!

Checking in was pretty good, didn't have to wait too long for our 2 rooms and the rooms were close to one another as requested. Checking out was no problem.

The rooms we had were spacious and comfortable. The cleaning lady was wonderful always left us a towel decoration on the bed and was there pretty early in the day to clean.

The food was good, we ate at the Carribean twice and I agree with the other people that the Grouper was excellent. The Italian restaurant was good I found the portions small. The Mexican restaurant was Ok. We enjoyed the buffet for breakfast and lunch and when we were there for dinner it was good as well. Plenty of variety even for picky eaters, different theme nights for dinner. The Oriental night was the best. The snack bars were great for a quick bite to eat during the day. You could even go & get a container of chips or nachos to have with your beer.

The beach is small but we really enjoyed it, the snorkling was excellent and the cruise ships were no way an intrusion to us in anyway. It just made you feel more like you were on vacation.

Over all this was a good trip and great place to stay, what could of been a disaster with the last day was taken care of and turned out to be a good experience. Thanks again to Freddie and to the Park Royal staff.

My wife and i, in our late 40's, just returned from the Park Royal and have a fabulous vacation!! This was our 4th trip to the island and never had so much fun! The rooms were nice and the hugh vanity and large shower were great. The grounds were always kept clean and and the staff was more than willing to meet our every needs. The food at the 3 specialty restaurants was very good, our favorite was the Caribean, the grouper was incredible and the salad bar was fantastic. Just remember you have to make reservations starting at noon, just watch the line, usually started around 11:30 to get the best times. Just make yourself a big cocktail and meet more people in line. The buffet restaurants were great for breakfast or lunch and we only ate dinner at the buffet once and it was an Italian theme and it was pretty good. You can eat there until 10:30. There is also good burgers, hotdogs, pizza, chicken sand, ham and cheese sand, and nachos available at the 2 pool restaurants. There are great bars every where!! The north pool bar usually open around ten. Great drinks of all kinds. Never stingy with the alcohol!! Great people!!

  • Liked — New resort great food great snorkeling great drinks
  • Disliked — slow check in and check out

We just arrived back from the Park Royal Cozumel. Six of us went on this trip 2 couples were seasoned and one was not. We all enjoyed our stay. Our trip was great the Park Royal was great. Our room and facilities were not as good as the Barceló Costa Cancun. However, the food was much better at Park Royal. Snorkeling right off the hotel beach was easy. It was the first time for all of us. We said we have to go home and buy our own snorkeling equipment. It would be better quality and good to go when ever we wanted to. We were limited to 1 hour per day. This was great to get us hooked. We rented a jeep for the day and four of us went to the beaches on the southern and eastern part of the island. (A must do for all visiting) This was great they were sandy and could just play in the waves. The one couples first time and they just loved it. We did too. The staff was friendly and keeps things picked up. .Overall we had a great time and we would go back.

Some things people should know.
1. The food was great (More on this later)
2. No alcohol beverages before 11:00are we did find one of the beach bars to start serving at 10:00 am. (No shortage of beverages after they started serving)
3. No mini bar in room only two bottles of water placed in your room each day (We knew this before we left)
4. The biggest issue for some, would be that all the walk ways are very rough (made out of large rocks with cement in between) and uneven and a lot of stairs. One couple struggled with this but said it was ok. She does not do stairs very well and he is legally blind. Going to the lobby was the worst part .lots of stairs up and if you were leaving the grounds a rough rocky pathway back down to the street. If you do not like or can not navigate stairs find a different place. (We do not remember reading anything about all the stairs.)
5. The beach has a lot of rocks you can not go out in the water without shoes.

Food.

We have eaten in many five star restaurants mostly in Vail Colorado This place is not one of them but close. We had an advantage with six of us we shared different things. (We know not proper dinning etiquette). Remember we or you are in Mexico things are not the same down there as in fancy resorts in the states. We will try to give you the pros and cons of these restaurants.

The Buffet
It is buffet food a large variety well prepared temperatures are appropriate. Breakfast and dinner are served on two sides. Sometimes there are different foods on each side. (Mostly the same.) Our favorite water was Miguel. He went out of his way to provide us with any “extras” we asked for.
Breakfast – great fruit, only had bacon once, omelets and eggs cooked to order, We loved the chilaquilles.
Lunch
Good variety but pretty heavy for us at lunch. Lots of fish offered and prepared well.
Dinner
Only ate there once. We were hungry and there were fine offerings. Don’t really remember what.

The Caribbean
- Great redfish dishes. Jerk Chicken was GREAT! The first time we ate there we had HUGE Peel and eat shrimp and a very large shrimp Cocktail. The second time there was only the shrimp cocktail. Other salads were very good. Get the coconut ice cream for dessert. It was all well prepared.
The Italian
– Not our favorite. However, the canoli were wonderful! From talking to others, the quality changes greatly from one day to the next. The salmon lasagna was not always fully cooked (a very distressing meal for those how chose it).
The Mexican
- This was our favorite. The chef special was very unusual but an excellent blend of fruit and meat (add some of the hot sauce from the appetizer and it is great). None of tried the fajitas, but were told by others that they were very bland (Remember they don’t season their food like we do in the States.) One of our party ordered the canola from the Italian restaurant, and the waiter found that very funny, but delivered the canola with a smile, and we ate it with a smile. The ice cream is always great. Coconut and the lime were the best. Try them together.

Just as anywhere else, when you are courteous and friendly with the staff, they will go out of their way to be accommodating. They appreciate a little extra in tipping and attention.
