I apologize ahead of time for the length of this review, but I have alot to say about this place.
Our family of 4 stayed here with another family from July 7-11. Both of our families stayed at this resort when it was the "Reef Club", so we somewhat knew what to expect. Of course Hurricane Wilma had changed things since we last were there.
We arrived from the airport with no problems, we booked through funjet, so our van was waiting to wisk us away as soon as we arrived. We were greeted at the hotel with fresh juice at check in. Our rooms were not ready, but we expected that, we arrived around 10am. No big deal, we got into our luggage and grabbed our swimsuits and off we went. ( our room was ready at 1pm )
I'll catagorize this to make it easier...
Rooms: Very nice, we stayed in 2334. They are average size hotel rooms. We had plenty of room. The beds are a little hard, but I've never had a soft bed in Mexico. We even sort of had an ocean view, and didn't even ask for it. That was a perk. We saw some beautiful sunsets. Our room was cleaned spotless every day. Our air conditioner worked to good, we had to ask for an extra blanket for our kids bed. We were short on towels the day we arrived, with just a phone call they brought more right up. The even have True Blue Spa amenities in the bathroom from bath and body works. A nice touch.
Pool: The main pool as you enter through the lobby is nice in size and has an adequate amount of lounge chairs and umbrellas surrounding it. They do seem to have a problem keeping the pool clear. They had some of the property managers in one day, so we said something to them about it, and they were very quick to take some extra measures in cleaning it up. There was never debris in the pool it was just extremely cloudy, like the pump system wasn't working properly. After working on it one evening into the next morning, it was better, but still not as clear as it should be. They also have a children's pool the surprisingly was much cleaner (mainly because you hardly saw anyone in it) our kids ventured over there a couple of times, but all the action was at the main pool, so that's where we stayed.
Grounds: The grounds are kept very neat and tidy. You will always see someone, sweeping, raking, weeding etc. You can tell it is taken care of, the grass is always cut and neat and the sand is always raked. Someone is always walking around picking things up, cups, plates, etc.
Food: Well this is were the "Wyndham" definately needs to kick it up a notch. The buffet always had a variety of food, but nothing really to write home about. You would often see the same meats, fish, etc each meal just with a different sauce on them. Kind of boring. They would always have a pasta bar at dinner, but again the same every night. An omelet bar in the mornings, again everyday. The fruit was my highlight and always very fresh. The snack bar near the pool was good, it was open from 11am - 6pm and then opened back up at 11pm until 1am. Sounds good and all but for someone who has picky eaters, we just didn't make it sometimes before closing at 6pm, so if your kids didn't like the buffet, they were pretty much stuck until the snack bar reopened at 11pm. We did eat at Mosaique (adults only) it was very good and a nice treat. Everyone of us liked what we had ordered and we had no problems with the being out of anything. They cooked grouper that would make your mouth water. Yum! We also at at the Vista del Mar (family) our 9 yr old came with us and he didn't like anything on the menu. Didn't surprise us as he is the picky eater, but everything was a little grown up for his taste buds. It is a family restaurant so I would have thought they would have had some things a little plainer, like just a grilled chicken breast with a vegetable on the side or something like that. The adults also enjoyed the food here, no complaints. Some of us had the grouper again, I prefered it at Mosaique, but it was also good here. They had a really good spinach salad. None of us got sick, so that's a good sign. We've stayed several different places that were all inclusive in Mexico, and the other buffets blew this place away, so if the food is your thing, this would not be the place for you. The resorts always have the nicer "restaurants" that you can eat at which we usually will try one night while we are there, but then eat the buffet the rest of the time because it always is so good. I think this place focused too much on eating at the nicer places and not the common area. You know sometimes you just don't want to be tied down to reservations, your suppose to be on vacaton!
Bar: We never had a problem with a line at the bar like some other reviews said, however they did tell us that we were there at the start of the slower season, so that could be it. The margarita's were good, the beer was cold, what more could you ask for right!?!
Beach: They have a nice beach area, you can snorkel there. It is rocky in some places, but you just need to take water shoes along. If you snorkel you can pick out the better areas to enter the water, and then you know. There is less to see as far a snorkeling than last time we visited here, but the hurricane took care of that I guess. What I love is you can get in the water with your kids and snorkel and not feel like they are out in the open water.
Excursions: We're not big on the group events we kind of do our own thing, so this is what we did... We rented a van from the hotel $135 for 24 hours. Didn't seem like a bad deal. We took one day and drove around to the windward side of the island, something I think everyone should do, it is a must see. While on that side we did visit Coconuts Bar and Grill after reading about on tripadvisor. It was worth the trip, neat place, and great food and drinks. We ended our adventure with stopping in town for some shopping and drinks before heading back. We ate at Palmeras in town a neat place, good food.
We also book a private catamaran tour with cozumel-sailing, also after reading the reviews on tripadvisor. These guys are great and worth every penny. We booked a four hour excursion for just the 8 of us. The sailed us out into the surf and had the catamaran splash around a bit with us. Fun, fun, fun. They headed down toward Passion Island where we stopped for some snorkeling. Only 4 of us snorkel, and one of our crew came in with us to be our guide, so this was great. After that we rode on the spinaker a must do, in my opinion. The adults and kids alike were very pleased with this trip and we would recommend it to everyone. We had a crew of three with us Juan, Jorge, and Jimmie. They were at our beckon call for four hours of fun. Did I mention we also had an open bar. They even blended up virgin drinks for the kids. We loved it!
Our kids went to the shows everynight, and enjoyed them.
I would say our overall experience at Wyndham was a good one, but they do have some work to do before we will return. I would imagine things will change for them to keep the Wyndham name. It is not a bad place at all, but for a little more money, you could have the great food and crystal clear pools to go along with it.
