We just returned from our stay at the Wyndham. We were there June 16-20. We are a couple in our mid to late 20's with no kids. Check in went smoothly---we even got into our room early. We had a 1st floor room right on the beach (literally our door was maybe 10 feet from the sandy beach!). We went over to Sabor, the adults only section with a hotel rep to check it out as a consideration of upgrading. Ultimately we decided not to because Sabor is not ocean front, or even ocean view. Yes, they have a wonderful pool with slides and a pool bar, but we decided we came to the beach to be at the beach not at a pool! A lot of people like it over there, but we just thought it wasn't for us. If you stay just at Wyndham, not Sabor, Aura, or Regency Club (the timeshare), then you have 2 pool options. The main pool, which is only about 4 feet deep and has not enough chairs, and the kids pool area, which is even more shallow and has a lot of kids in it. However, that pool has a "bar" where you can get smoothies and milkshakes. Great if you are thirsty, but don't really want to drink alcohol. I wish the pool situation had been better, but it definately didn't ruin my vacation.
Here are some positives about Wyndham:
*Good value for the money
*Very, very beautiful resort
*Very friendly and helpful staff
*Nice toiletries provided--Bath and Body Works brand
*Grounds were well maintained
*Great snorkeling/kayaking
*Room was very clean and was kept that way
*Great breakfast buffet
*Lots of beach chairs available
*Very relaxing and tropical vibe
*Several room options (Wyndham, Sabor, Aura) to cater to varied tastes
*They serve purified water at this resort, which includes their ice. Don't drink the water out of the tap in the room, though. We did not get sick at all, and I am the kind of person who gets sick ALL the time!!
Here are some negatives about Wyndham:
*Only bar open during the day is by the snack bar and the line can get kinda long. You can ask for alcoholic drinks in La Isla, the buffet restaurant, however.
*Alcoholic drink quality was inconsistent. Sometimes they would be good (and a few times great) and then other times they would taste strange or very weak. It didn't bother me much, though because I would just get another! Someone previously mentioned they have Dos Equis on tap (I wish) but instead it is Sol. It's ok. If you are set on being drunk the whole time, then you'll have to work at it, but if you are the average person who just wants to relax and have a few drinks every day, you'll be just fine.
*The buffet is ok, but not great. The exception to that is breakfast. We loved breakfast! Lots of yummy food and great variety. For lunch your options are the buffet or the grill. We had a little of both for variety. I loved the chips and guacamole at the grill. For dinner you can either have buffet or make reservations at the 3 available restaurants. I would recommend that you get your reservations early when you arrive for each night you are there. You will enjoy it more than buffet, which can get boring if you eat it lunch and dinner both.
*Service was great at the restaurants and bars, but they seemed understaffed.
*The ocean is very rocky due to the damage from the Hurricane in '05. Bring closed toe water shoes to wear. I had some water flip flops and regretted it. You will want to get in the ocean because the water is warm, clear, and bright blue! We went snorkling right at the hotel (the equipment is free for you to use) and it was breathtaking! Lots of plant/sea life to experience!
*Regency Club is the timeshare there and it is a little disappointing to see their perks. They have a pool (the only deep one), a beach bar (the only one), and Jacuzzi tubs on the balconies. Just don't think about it/pay any attention to it! They want to make the experience unequal so that you will be tempted to get a timeshare or upgrade your room.
Overall, we had an awesome vacation! The negatives that I wrote about were just to help you have a realistic expectation, but they did not in any way ruin my vacation. My husband and I are positive, fun loving people who don't enjoy complaining about things. Go with a positive attitude and you'll love it! I still wish I was there!
Also, a must do is to rent a car and explore the island! We had a blast doing that! Go to Coconuts Bar and Grill outside of the resort. Food is great, drinks are great and it's lots of fun! Also, the beach on the other side of the ocean is an experience! Ocean is rougher there with lots of undertow, but it's gorgeous and fun to play in. The sand is so deep that we literally sunk in a foot or more!
