I would rate the Wyndham one grade higher, if only the water were clearer (as it is everywhere else in Cozumel) or if the entry to the water did not require stumbling over 50 feet of rocks - which you can't see, due to the cloudy water. Evidently the hurricane damaged the reef, and it has not yet recovered.
Everything else was fine. There was no wait to check in. The room was spacious, spotless and very comfortable. In spite of advisories in the room to the contrary, sheets and towels were changed daily. When we asked at the desk, our room was stocked with water, and the minibar was restocked with more the one afternoon I was present when the guy came. But the tap water is safe to drink (which we did all week with no ill effects) so the bottled water was only for our excursions.
We were at the Regency Club (north) end of the resort - very quiet, except for one midday when they had a "fiesta lunch" at our pool. Because of the loud music and constant pool games, we avoided the main pool - but going a few yards to the beach restored the quiet. The Regency Club area has easy access to the beach and Vista del Mar restaurant.
The bars vary in the amount of alcohol put into each drink, but when you can have all you want, is that really a problem? My only complaint is that the wine selection (by the glass) is limited to two - Red and White - neither is wonderful, and sometimes taste as if they had been exposed to heat, which is not a surprise either. I just asked for another glass...
If you have a car, you can find snorkeling that is good north of the resort between Las Uvas and the FiestaAmericana. If you look closely, you will find rows of white sandbags in a couple of places, which make entry into the water MUCH easier through the rocky coast. This is an area where lots of the snorkeling tours go. If you don't have a car, walk south to the adjoining resorts - entry into the water is better. If you get Franko's Map of the island, you will see all the reefs and which are best for snorkeling and diving.
Food is not the highlight here, but it is fine, although I did not enjoy the one dinner we had at the buffet. Make reservations right away if you want to eat in the sit-down restaurants. We enjoyed Mosaique and Vista del Mar more than Roberto's. The service is uneven, but usually provided with a smile and good intention. I totally agree with other reviewers who note that the island - and the workers - have made an amazing recovery from a devastating hurricane. And as another reviewer pointed out: this is, after all, Mexico. Go with it, enjoy the differences or stay at home.
