My husband an I just returned from a 6 day trip to Cozumel. As soon as we pulled up to Wyndham, I knew we had made a good choice. The hotel truly captures the feeling of the Carribean. It has an open air feel with a sandy beach, beautiful palm trees, and gorgeous flowers decorating the facility.

I was pleasantly surprised by our room. It was on the third floor and was brightly decorated with a vaulted ceiling. We did not pay extra for the beach view, but still had a nice view out onto the courtyard.

The entire staff was extremely friendly and seemed to go out of their way to be sure we had a good time. We had one problem with the air conditioning in our room, and someone came immediately to fix it.

The main goal of our trip was to SCUBA dive. We booked all of our trips through the Sandollar dive shop, conveniently located right at the facility. The entire staff was friendly and enthusiastic. We ended up with the same dive master, Hector, on almost all of our dives. He had a friendly disposition and was good at pointing out sea life. We saw a sea turtle on every dive, a shark, octopus, stingrays, huge lobsters, and the most colorful fish I have ever seen up close. It was like swimming in an aquarium.

The food was what I expected from an all inclusive resort. I loved having omelets every morning and the watermelon was extremely fresh and tasty. Our favorite restaurant was the Asian-Fusion.

During the day the beach bar offered a variety of frozen drinks and beer. My favorite being the mudslide with a banana. At night you could get top shelf liquor from any of the restaurants or Bar Azul.

I definitely suggest renting a jeep or scooter (we did both) and travel the island. Cozumel is a beautiful island, and my favorite locations on it were far away from the tourist spots. We had a delicious meal of cerviche and grilled shrimp at the grill on Playa Bonita. We also visited Mayan ruins and the cute little town of El Cedral.

My biggest complaint about he hotel was the other tourists. Many of them were what give Americans bad names (many of them are the ones that made the ridiculous complaints about this hotel on this website). I believe when you travel you should be excited about the cultural differences that you experience. Many of these people expected it to be just like what they experience in America. If I wanted an American beach vacation, I would have stayed in America.

All in all we had a great trip. I would definitely suggest the Wyndham and the island of Cozumel to anyone.

  • Liked — The SCUBA diving.
  • Disliked — The culturally inexperienced American tourists.

My husband & I (both 45 years old) just got back from the Wyndham Resort. We had a blast !!! The staff was fantastic, (Barney & Lorena were terrific around the pool), Manuel is the best bartender EVER !!! Roberto's Italian food was amazing. I had read several bad reviews and wasn't sure what to expect but I would go back here in a NY minute. Everyone was so fantastic and very accomodating. It wasn't crowded at all so we didn't have to wait for anything. AWESOME WEEK !!!!

My boyfriend and I stayed in the Sabor section of the Wyndham Resort May 10-16. We are in our mid and late twenties and this was our fourth year vacationing Cozumel. Check in was a breeze, as we were shuttled to the Sabor’s private concierge and our bags were taken to our room. Enrique is Sabor’s concierge and he was most helpful in accommodating any needs requested by guests. He speaks good english and is the person to ask for help or assistance for
anything and everything you might need during your stay.

The Sabor section of the resort is beautiful, very secluded, and creates a great kid free atmosphere. The swim up bar was open, and the drinks were tasty. Hilario is the bartender at this bar, which also has seating on the opposite side. He does a great job adequately tending both sides of the bar. He is a seasoned bartender and can make anything you want. Unfortunately, there were some days when the top shelf tequila and whiskey ran out in the afternoon but it was offered everyday. Tip him, he works hard and deserves it.

The Sabor restaurant Mosaique and the other reservation only restaurant Roberto’s both provide good quality more up-scale food. The service at these restaurants is slow, but accommodating with a nice atmosphere. We preferred to eat most meals, specifically breakfast and lunch, at the main resorts La Isla restaurant buffet. The food here is good with a nice variety. The service here is fast and you can get in and out quickly. For this reason alone we preferred this style versus the more up-scale Mosaique. The omelet bar and fried eggs were awesome, but there was something for everyone from big eaters to dieters. The lunch buffet always had great light options and hot meal options. This buffet opens again at 11 p.m. – 1 a.m., for late night snacks. La Marinero is an open air grill located next to the pool and main bar at the Wyndham, this offered hamburgers, hot dogs, nachos, mac&cheese, and of course salsa and guacamole everyday. The Mosaique restaurant offers a limited room service menu from 7 a.m. – 10 p.m. daily, which we took full advantage and were never disappointed. The food was always fresh and hot.

The staff at the main Wyndham resort in the lobby are very knowledgeable and helpful in arranging whatever you may want to do. The guys that arrange tours are trustworthy and are not land sharks. The bell hops, specifically Antonio, are great they give good advice on places off the beaten path to visit around the island. This resort has a bank with an ATM, spa, and small shopping center on site. This is a huge plus because most resorts don’t have an ATM. The spa is top notch and the employees are very professional.

One day we had the opportunity to witness the kids club. There were two staff members for 6 children under the age of 5-6 years old. The kids all were wearing blue vests with kid’s club on the front and back. They took such good care of these kids that I was impressed enough to write about it. They took them swimming and fed them lunch. I watched these two staff members go one by one and ask each child what they wanted to eat for lunch, and get it for them. Anyone with kids could feel good about leaving the kids in this program and counting on both having a day of fun.

Now for my complaints regarding my stay at this resort. My primary complaint is that the beach is a real problem! It is so rocky that it is almost impossible to get into the water, and for about 10-15 yards out there is zero visibility. This is a real shame because just about 20 yards past the bowies there are really FANTASTIC reefs. You have to be careful snorkeling out this far because many boats drop off snorkelers here and there is bout traffic. Secondly, which isn’t really a complaint but more of a dislike because the Sabor section is so secluded. It is a pretty long walk to get to the buffet, beach or main lobby from Sabor. We knew this before we went but didn’t realize what a pain it would be. Lastly, the resort seems to still be working out some issues, leaving it yet a little disorganized. Simple things like proper bed linens and water seemed to be difficult to obtain.

This resort does not deserve negative reviews. The grounds are spectacular, the food is tasty and abundant, and the drinks are whatever or however you want. Service is good and all you have to do to get what you want is ask Enrique. The week we were there we talked to several guests and none reported any significant complaints with the Sabor resort.

  • Liked — The private Concierge, bartender service, and food variety.
  • Disliked — The beach.

Me and my girlfriend stayed at the Wyndham from May 10 through May 17 and had a great time. We are 26 and 25 years old. We got engaged and had an amazing time in Cozumel.
When we arrived in Cozumel we had to wait in a few lines going through customs, getting a taxi, and checking into the resort. Our flight landed a little after 1:00 and we were in our room by 2:45 or so. This was no big deal for us as we are patient and understand that it is impossible to get everybody off the plane, through customs, into a cab, and checked in instantly.
The food was decent. The buffett was good for breakfast and just ok for lunch and dinner. The pool snack bar was good for lunch serving burgers, fries, nachos with cheese, guac, pico, hot dogs, pizza, etc. The specialty restaurants Mosaic, Vista Del Mar, and Robertos were all good, with Mosaic being the best. The teryaki beef tacos were excellent.
We never had a long line at the bar and there were always 2 bartenders. They only ran out of Strawberry Daiquri mix once in 7 days and we never experienced any other problems getting drinks at any of the bars on the resort.
The room was great. Our porch stepped directly onto the sand with an amazing view. Our AC unit worked too well at times, as we got cold in the room sometimes, but that is not a complaint. We had a safe, ceiling fan, TV, and everything in the bathroom worked fine. We never saw any big cockroaches like other people have claimed to see and never experienced any bug or fly problems. The maids cleaned our room everyday by noon or so, and we left $2 a day for them.
We took 2 snorkeling tours with Sandollar Sports and had a great time, seeing amazing tropical fish, an eel, and a sunken ship. We also rented a Jeep from the resort for about $90 for 24 hours. Driving around the island was incredible. The East side of the island has very cool with great views, and the restaurant Coconuts was awesome. I had the Shrimp Tacos and almost ordered a 2nd order they were so good. The resort also gives out free one-way cab rides to Carlos 'n Charlies downtown. We just had to pay the $13 to get back. Bargaining with the locals at the downtown shops is great. If they tell you $40 you can probably get it for $20.
So if you are not overly picky and can be a little bit patient you will have a great time. We actually had to wait longer in Dallas-FW coming back through customs than we ever had to wait in Mexico. I think a lot of people want to be pampered and waited on, but we are not those people, which is why we loved this resort. We also liked that it is not a huge mega resort like in Cancun. The Wyndham is set up in small villas which makes everything a lot more accessible in my opinion. Everything is a short outside walk away.

Thanks to all the terrible reviews of this resort, I was terrified to make the trip, and was pleasantly suprised to find the resort more than I expected. I pondered during my week stay why such horrible reviews and realized that the seasoned traveler who understands "you get what you pay for" and what the concept of a three star hotel means will completely be satisfied with their stay. To all the "complainers", you must understand that this entire island was destroyed in 2005 leaving the staff you ripped apart homeless and out of work. I think they did an incredible job getting up and running and getting these people their jobs back.
I had no water bottles in my room all week, I bought a few at the gift shop and found a cold refill place in the gym that no one ever touched, not sure that the complainers are the gym types anyway! We had water issues that needed attention in the room and the water was cut off two nights, but we had recieved a letter in the evening to let us know. The food is average "all inclusive" food and the staff seems to get a little rude when they don't have what you want (decaf or tea), but I came to realize that they have no control and are a little embarassed that they can't help, that comes off rude sometimes. Now, about the sewage smell, it didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the reef algae is the culprit!!!! A strong wind and it will knock you off your socks! Lighten up complainers and relax, it is not all about food and drink, you are in what I think is the most beautiful island I have ever seen and it endured an 72 hour hurricane just a few years ago, take a step back and look around. I wish them all the best and am looking forward to my return next year!
