I have stayed at other resorts in Cozumel and they were awesome. The Wyndham was a nightmare, and I won't even get into the 4" cockroach problems.
My husband and I wasted a lot of money to visit the Wyndham and got nothing in return. I do not want anyone else to have to go through the stress and financial loss that we did. We feel the information provided on their website was completely misrepresented. It would be in the best interest of future consumers to be notified and warned of what to expect when planning a vacation with Wyndham Resorts.
The following problems occurred during our 11 day stay. We chose this resort because it was supposed to be all inclusive, but it turned out to be all illusive. Most days we went without adequate food. It was a major time consuming ordeal just to get drinking water. We had to grab a taxi to San Miguel to get something decent to eat. The resort was always out of everything, including the most basic necessities. I believe we probably paid twice for everything, once for the vacation, booked through Orbitz, and a second time by having to purchase food and supplies. Each person is allowed 1 bottle of water at check in (except for my sister’s family of 4, they were allotted 1 bottle to share). There is 1 water dispenser for the entire complex located at the beach bar. We asked where another might be, and were told we had to use the one at the bar. This dispenser was always out of water, for hours at a time. The main restaurant would not give me water, I was told to go to the bar. The bar always had 20+ people in line as there was only one unhappy bartender. We had to purchase bottles of water at the gift shop. Eventually, the gift shop also ran out of water. I contacted the front desk, and they told me each guest was allowed one bottle of water at check in and to refill it at the bar or restaurant. I told them we could not get water there and they shrugged their shoulders. The bar would run out of beer and alcohol everyday, usually by noon. You had to stand in line just to get a Coke, water and ice. I would tip the bartenders to make a better drink, I watched, and I do not believe they even used a full shot of cheap liquor in each drink. They permanently ran out of Tabasco sauce. To clean the plastic bar glasses, they were dumped into a tub of water and bleach (I presume). Then they were dumped into a tub of clean water, pulled out and used again, no washing involved. Some of the glasses still had lip stick on them, as there were not scrubbed down. I was given a dirty look when I asked for a clean glass.
We were without toilet paper for two days. I requested some from the front desk, and I was told to check back tomorrow. My housekeeper managed to find a box of Kleenex for me to use. She also managed to find a few bottles of water periodically. She saved the day and was absolutely fabulous. I think we would have checked out if it were not for Margarita.
There were no beach towels available. We did not get beach towels for 2 days, they were always out, no matter what time we checked. Each day I was told to check back tomorrow. When I finally did get one, I had to keep it day after day, as there were no more towels to replace it with. They even ran out of towels for the bathrooms. I requested towels from the front desk. Again, they told me to check back tomorrow. Check back tomorrow was the common response for all requests. There was very little food to eat for an “all inclusive”. Every day we tried to get lunch from the snack bar, but it was always out of everything. The heating pans to hold the food just sat there empty. The snack bar had one cook, he had to grill hamburgers and hot dogs, make rotisserie chicken, pizza, fries, everything. He was the only employee who had a really bad attitude, not that I could blame him. He never could keep up with the grill duties, nor did he try. I stood in line for 40 minutes to get a hamburger, which was uncooked in the middle, its not safe to eat raw meat in the US, let alone Mexico. There were no fries or anything else to go with it. I could not get any cutlery or napkins to eat with. They ran out of straws. When a small amount of food was put out, it was swarmed by people and gone in 30 seconds.
The Main restaurant took forever, and there were always long lines. Once again, there was only one poor cook to work the grill and two separate specialty bars. For example, it was “cooked to order” pasta. After making sauce and pasta for each individual guest, the poor women had to run each pan back to the kitchen and wash it herself, over and over again. At the same time, she had to grill meats at a different station, and cook fish at yet a 3rd station. She had 3 separate, long lines of upset people to serve. She was on the verge of tears. Breakfast was served from 7-11. By 8am, they were out off egg dishes and meats. I waited an hour, and these items were never replaced. It was very hard to get a glass of water or refills on coffee. The employees are stretched way to thin. It was very sad, as they really need their jobs, yet are treated no better than slaves. These employee’s were trying very hard, but they had been forced into a no win situation.
We ate at three of the specialty restaurants, it took 1-1/2 to order and eat. Again, short on staff.
Towards the end of our stay, we discovered what part of the problem was. We started noticing a high rate of guest turnover from day to day. We found out that passengers off of the Cruise Ships were being bussed to our resort for the day. One person from the ship told me they pay $30 to spend the day at the Wyndham Resort, and this includes all the food and drink they want, plus amenities. They took most of the dive equipment from the dive shop, we, as long term paying guests, were left with the crap. They drank all the beer from our bar by noon everyday. Drank all our water and ate all our food. They were responsible for the lack of beach towels. The ship people would wander the beach, waiting for people to get out of their chairs to get in the water and then dump that persons belongings into the sand and run off with the chair. Groups of teenagers from the ship would forcibly take the chairs out from older guests who were actually staying at the resort. Telling them they could share chairs and give up the others.
Many of the guests who were staying during the same time period as us had the same complaints. Many said they can not believe what Wyndham has done to the Reef Club. They also voiced that they would not be returning to a Wyndham property anytime soon.I cannot believe that the Wyndham Resorts’ Management would take away from the paying, long term guests, to give to the people on a day pass; but that is exactly what they did. I hope the Cruise Ship people had a good time on my dollar. The cruise passengers got the better deal as they were only there for one day, and did not have to put up with the problems the long term guests had to suffer.
It will be a long time before we are able to afford another vacation, and have the time off from work. We learned the hard way about Buyer Beware.
The most pathetic part is that I sent a letter to Wyndham and they did not even have the curteousy to respond.
