My wife and I just returned from a week at the Sabor and we had a wonderful, relaxing vacation. After reading all the positive and negative reviews I really didn't know what to expect, but I can tell you from our experiences the negative reviews are simply undeserved.
The Sabor is part of the Wyndham Resort & Spa, but is completely separated from the other parts of the resort. It has its own pool w/ swim-up bar, restaurant (Mosaique), outdoor lounge, management and concierge service. No children under 18 are allowed in this section of the resort, which helps to create a quieter and relaxed environment. You pay a little extra to get a room in this section of the resort, but it is worth every penny (or peso).
The grounds are beatifully landscaped. The buildings and rooms are clean and kept in excellent condition. The pool & pool area is very nice, which was great because that is where we spent a majority of our time. The resort management and employees were extremely friendly & professional.
The rooms are large and tastefully decorated. All rooms have either large balconies or terraces with hammocks facing the pool. The bathrooms were nice with plenty of water pressure and hot water... only once did we not have hot water and that was later in the day. Housekeeping did a good job of keeping our room clean and refreshed every day. Once they didn't have our room cleaned when we left for dinner at 6PM, so we asked mgmt about it.... it was clean by the time we returned about 2 hours later. Our room refridgerator was stocked daily with water (2 bottles), sodas (6 cans) and beer (2 cans). We were always able to get water or other drinks at the poolside bar without any waiting so I really don't understand all the negative reviews about not having water or having to wait to get drinks.
Some previous reviews complained about a sewage smell in parts of the resort. The only place we experience this was along the walkway near the main lobby of the resort.... but never in the Sabor section of the resort. The smell is noticeable, but not strong enough to make you loose your appetite or sick. Just a minor annoyance when walking to the rest of the resort.
The Mosaique restaurant was excellent and we ate all of our breakfasts, lunches and most of our dinners there. The grouper with garlic & thyme is not to be missed... the best grouper that I have ever had. The servers were extremely friendly and responsive. I don't remember my water or wine glass every becoming empty.
We did eat dinner at the other restaurants (Roberto's & Vista del Mar) at the resort. The food was good, not great and the service tended to be slower - another reason to spend the extra money for the Sabor section. We avoided the buffet as we were never in a hurry to eat. We didn't have any problems getting reservations at any of the restaurants - you just have to plan a day or two in advance.
I have read some reviews where people were complaining about food portions being small. I did not find this the case - on the contrary I would say the portions were about perfect. If I was really hungry, I had an appetizer, entree and dessert and was completely satisfied. I am 5'8" & 170 lbs and am very active for a reference point. It was actually kind of nice coming back from vacation and not feeling like I need to go on a diet.
The spa is very nice and luxurious... my wife and I both had massages and she also had a pedicure. This was my first ever professional massage so I have nothing to compare it to. But it was very relaxing... except for the parts where she was working on a tight muscle or two. The prices were reasonable... $75 for a 30 minute couples' massage and they run daily specials.
There were resort personnel in the lobby trying to sign people up for a timeshare presentation, but they weren't pushy at all. We decided to go through the presentation... eventually deciding that it wasn't for us....no high pressure sales pitch, just presenting what they offered & the benefits.
Towards the end of our stay I managed to injur my foot pretty bad, requiring stitches. The paramedic & doctor at the resort took excellent care of me and my wound... stitching it up right there in the first aid office. The paramedic changed the bandages daily and management was checking on me continually to see if I was comfortable and needed anything. I don't think I would have received better care at home.
Overall, we had a fabulous time here and will likely stay here again if and when we return to Cozumel.
