Let me start by saying, I've travelled extensively in the Carribean with all-inclusives, cruises, and regular hotels and I was disappointed with the Wyndham Cozumel. My boyfriend and I chose this resort for a relaxing 6 day trip to escape cold weather. We aren't stuck up people who like to complain. Some people will find something wrong no matter where they go, but that's not us. We are very relaxed people, just looking to enjoy the sun and unwind. We have a good time no matter where we go and usually look on the bright side of things. However, I did want to offer our experience to others.
There was no major catastrophe with our visit to the Wyndham, but a lot of little issues that add up and put a damper on things. First off, we are not super wealthy and work hard for our money. Some people have said this is a bargain all-inclusive and what do you expect for the cheap price. It's not that cheap to some people and no matter what, you paid good money for the trip.
When we first booked the trip, we requested a king size bed. The hotel also ran a promotion that you would receive a $100 credit to the spa. When we arrived, we were given 2 queen beds. We had to switch rooms. Of course, they didn't know about our spa voucher even though we showed them the paperwork. They paged a manager, who never arrived and told us to come back the next day. And next day, and next day, until we gave up. Our new room was located directly next to the buffet. The workers rolled huge carts directly past our room that sounded like a plane landing outside. It became a game to count how many times we were woken by the carts. 6 was the lowest number, and we're normal sleepers. The shower would not drain and for 3 days we had no hot water in the shower. It was ice cold! There was a definitely septic smell in our section of the resort. I think after the first 2 days we just got used to it. Our toilet got clogged three times (only going number 1) and we had to call them to bring a plunger each time. However, the topper was the 3 inch cockroach I found on our bed one morning!
The food at the buffet was not good. The fresh fruit was hot. We also noticed that they recycled the same food over and over until people ate it. For example, the french fries left over from lunch were tossed into the salad for dinner. We didn't mind the long lines at the bar, but the drinks weren't great. The bartender seemed annoyed if you kept coming back. The entertainment group for the kids at night seemed good, but for anyone over 15, there was not much to do at night. Like us, most people just wandered around the resort. A lot of people had decks of cards.
The other reviewers were not exaggerating when they say the beach was rocky! You really could not walk into the water. Most people were getting the the edge of the water and just laying down and trying to swim out instead of walking into the water. I cut the bottom of my feet on the rocks and got a huge splinter with a rock stuck in it.
On the plus side, the staff seemed very hardworking and nice. It seemed like they were really trying. Sand dollar sports gave excellent dive trips. The specialty restaurants were good and we didn't have a problem making reservations. We got every one we asked for. The scooter station next to the gift shop rented scooters for $35 for 24 hours - the best deal we found. We highly recommend taking the drive around the island. It was our favorite part of the trip. Definitely stop at Coconuts on the Hill. Beautiful views.
We would definitely return to Cozumel, but not stay at the all inclusive Wyndham. Like I said, none of these problems were huge, but they did start to add up after a while. We laughed each one off and still had a great vacation, but I would recommend going elsewhere. I do believe that the staff is working hard to improve the hotel, and in a few years it will be a great place to visit.
