This was our 3rd time visiting Chankanaab Park. We arrived on the Carnival Triumph in June of 2013. I had already printed out my $2 off per person coupon before leaving home. We grabbed a taxi for $16 one way to Chankanaab (there were 5 in our group...4 adults and one 12 year old). It is so easy to get a taxi in Cozumel that I no longer book tours ahead of time. We got to the park and paid $19 pp to get in, using our credit card.
Unlike the other times we had visited, there was a Chankanaab employee standing at the entrance telling us that they offered a free 30 minute tour of the Mayan ruin replica area, lagoona, and other areas of the park. We decided to take it, and so glad we did. There were areas of the park I had never seen. Plus, he gave us info about the significance of some of the ruin replicas. The only down side was that we were carrying all our stuff the entire tour (snorkel gear, back packs, etc.). At the end of the tour he took us to the beach area and introduced us to Gonzalo, who would be our waiter for the day. There were plenty of palapas to choose from.
We tipped our guide $10. Had we not taken the tour, I would have never known they had a spa, where, by the way, 4 of us got 45 minute massages for $120 total (paid with credit card). It was great! We also discovered that the snorkeling was better on the upper end.
Chankanaab offers free life vests, but we chose not to use them. The salt water kept us afloat very well. We had our own snorkel gear, but you can rent it there as well. We had several drinks each ($6), but they arent very strong. I'm a light weight when it comes to alcohol, and I never felt a thing. Our waiter, Gonzalo, started a tab for us. We later ate nachos, beef tacos, and chicken quesadillas, which he brough to us under our palapa...no need to even go to the restaurant. The food was AMAZING and resonably priced.
What I love about Chankanaab is that it is never crowded, beautiful, and the best snorkeling we have ever experienced. This is not a beach, it is a reef.(There is a small beach type area for the kiddos) Even though we have been here 3 times now, I still feel there are areas I haven't explored. They have tequilla tasting, sea lion shows, swim w/dolphins/manatee, etc...which we have never done...YET!
Oh, they are also putting in a zipline! Not sure when it will be completed. I cant wait to return here. ***We almost messed up....when Gonzalo brought our bill, we pulled out our credit card...oh no, the restaurant doesnt take credit card. They have an ATM machine, but I never draw cash from my cc, so I didn't have that set up. Luckily, between the 5 of us, we pulled just enough cash together to pay our tab and have enough for the cab ride back to the pier. That was a close one!
