My sister and I decided to go away for our birthday this year for the first time in many, many years. We chose the Iberostar Cozumel because I had stayed in several Iberostar resorts over the years, including the Iberostar Bavaro and the Iberostar Paraiso Lindo and knew that we could count on good food and excellent service.
The Iberostar Cozumel did not disappoint. We arrived via Air Canada Vacations on January 26 at about 12:00 p.m. and were in our room by 1:00 that afternoon. We were greeted with a welcome cocktail and escorted to room 2214 which was overlooking both the beach and the pool area. We could not have asked for a better room.
All rooms have been refurbished since the hurricane last summer and are well appointed. We had two double beds with a television, mini bar, coffee maker and a large bathroom with a huge shower stall. We were even lucky enough to have two very large iguanas act as our protectors during our stay as they kept vigil on our thatched roof throughout our visit.
The food at the buffet is excellent. We also ate dinner at the steak restaurant, which was very good providing you don't order the beef tenderloin. It can be very tough, as we had heard from other visitors to the resort, so we all ordered the ribeye steaks, which were excellent.
Breakfast is the best meal of the day. There is a huge assortment of breakfast meats, made to order omelets, freshly made doughnuts, eggs, cereals, and a fruit assortment that is outstanding. We ate all of our lunches at the pool restaurant and there was a huge variety of food there as well, including freshly grilled chicken, pastas, pizza and the best guacamole I have ever tasted.
The resort is one of the furthest resorts away from the airport, but is still only a quick 20 minute bus ride away. The beach is a little bit rocky, but this is understandable given the fact that it it surrounded by the second largest coral reef in the world. The snorkelling around the pier at the resort is outstanding. You can see a huge variety of fish including baracudas, parrot fish, angel fish, needle fish, and on one day, a huge school of jellyfish surrounded the pier and stung a few of the snorkellers. Most said that it was not a big deal - felt like a mild bee or wasp sting.
Best excursion was on the catamaran to do an afternoon of snorkelling at the Palancar and Columbia reefs. We were lucky enough to have seen nurse sharks, crabs, baracudas, turtles, and a huge moray eel. Wonderful experience that we will never forget.
Perhaps the best thing about this resort was the number of wonderful new friends we met. The majority of the guests were Canadian and everyone was extremely friendly. Without a doubt, this was the most friendly resort that I have ever visited anywhere in the Caribbean. Hi to Gillian, Laura, Sally, Lisa, Darlene, Joyce, Ray, Linda, Alain and Louise. It was a real pleasure spending our vacation with you.
Anyone travelling to this resort will have a fabulous time. We will be going back for sure!
