Our family vacation (5/27/06 - 6/3/06) to the Iberostar all inclusive on Cozumel was fabulous and a super time. I would recommend this location to anyone.
We had never been to Mexico. The Iberostar reviews seemed pretty good, even with the hurricanes from last year. The resort has recovered very well and offered excellent services in every area. (Yes, the jungle is still very damaged, so don't bother with the jeep tours, horseback tours, or renting a car or moped - we didn't do any of those because there was no jungle to see!!)
Our room was a little small (we were rarely there so it didn't matter in the least!), but perfectly clean, the AC worked great (also a nice ceiling fan for when the AC was too cold), no bugs or critters inside, and the electricity worked fine for recharging a digital camera. Our maid service was superb and we difinitely tipped her on our departure (do you know maids there make $4.50/day?? - our Apple rep didn't tell us that, another British tour director mentioned it in her group intro talk!). We loved the hammock on our deck and would recommend the 2nd story room.
The all inclusive food and bar service made the trip wonderful (no stress about worrying who is ordering what and how much does it cost, etc). The Iberostar had so many selections for every meal and such a wide variety that even after 7 days I still had not sampled everything. The food was extremely well presented (lots of fun carved items), tasted great, and it was a wonderful experience to try new things as well as having some standard "American style" food to fall back on if you weren't feeling experimental. The bar service (we loved the swim up bar!!) was quick, friendly, and every drink was great. We also tipped these guys on our departure (again a recommendation by the Brit tour director).
You will not believe all the activities to do at the hotel...we had lots of fun with the sea kayaks, catamarans, snorkeling off the pier (yes, the reefs are a bit damaged by the storms, but you can still see a few fish), dance lessons, water polo, water aerobics, step aerobics, pool volleyball, beach volleyball, and on and on. They had a beach picnic mid week that was great and had live music. They also had a group come in and do an Aztec dance that was very cool (my daughter was chosen to be the participant, so she now has an Aztec brother!) There were activities for all ages (we had a 13 and 17 year old but there were people with younger kids having lots of fun too). We were amazed by the young people running the hotel activities. They are friendly, helpful, and energetic....doing the activities with guests all day and then they do the entertainment at night!! We enjoyed all of the activity organizers. One hint...invite them to have lunch with you. They are interesting to talk to (and they cannot eat in the guest area unless invited to do so...another hint Apple did not tell us). Tip the activities people if you enjoy what they have helped you with!!
We would not recommend the dive shop at the Iberostar (Dressel divers). It was our mistake (and our Apple rep) that we did not remember to ask for our free dive, so we paid full price (which is much more than other shops) and then they would not give us a refund. The dive/snorkel tour we did with them as a family had some problems. Our two certified divers got put in a group with people learning to dive, so they had to wait for their training, making the dive time shorter and not as good. The snorkeling leader was helpful when you swam up to him for help, but I think if one of us would have drowned, he would have never known.
Our Apple reps at the hotel were very friendly and did a super job getting us from the airport to the hotel and back. They messed up a few times and since this was our first trip w/Apple and to Cozumel, we didn't know better. You sign up w/Apple for extra trips like parasailing. We thought once we were signed up, we just had to show up at the pier as instructed by Apple. Bring your receipt!!! Turns out you always have to bring your receipt - and not your visa receipt it is the other one they give you. Again, this was a bit our fault but the Apple rep could have told us. Their introductory talk could have been much more detailed, especially since they knew this was our first trip (we listened in on the Brit's tour director and she told her group a huge amount of information, including how to bargain when shopping (offer half and walk away), how to negotiate your taxi fair before you get into the taxi, the fact that Punta Sur was still not open to the public because of the storm damage, etc). We learned from our taxi driver that Chankanaab Park was not open yet either....our travel shop should have told us about both of those closings.
Finally - the time we went had some to do with the great experience we had. Late May is barely the start of the hurricane season (although luckily for us the weather was perfect all 7 days!) but it was a slower time at the hotel which we liked. There was no hassle waiting for food or finding lounge chairs (yes a few people put their towels out at the crack of dawn to reserve them, but we found some each day) because the hotel was not as full.
We had an awesome family vacation and would do it again in a heartbeat (if we had that much money saved up again!!).
