We stayed at the Iberostar Cozumel from March 25 through April 1, 2005. We booked our vacation through Apple Vacations. This is our second visit to Cozumel (we stayed at the El Cozumeleno the first trip). From reading many past reviews on this hotel I was a bit concerned. After staying there for a week, I have to say I don’t know what all the fuss was about. We traveled in a party of 6 adults – having 3 rooms total – two in Building 86 and one in Building 82. These buildings were close to the pool and near the beach area.
Grounds - The resort is very large with many turns with a jungle type atmosphere. There are peacocks, flamingos, iguanas, turtles, geckos and various birds. They spray for mosquitoes twice a day and we really didn’t have much of a problem with them.
Staff - The staff go out of their way to help. Please tip them...They work hard and deserve it. We especially enjoyed Candealero and Ruben at the Pool Bar.
Food – Overall I would rate it very good. Try the fresh pico de gallo and guacamole.
Breakfast – is served at the main buffet beginning at 7 a.m. The made to order omelets are great. The toast takes a while. There is a continental breakfast served at 10 a.m. at the pool snack bar for the late risers.
Lunch – we only ate lunch at pool snack bar. They had a variety of burgers, sandwiches, salads, and nacho’s. One day they had steak and pork on the grill. Another day they had prawns (shrimp).
Dinner – I believe the main buffet is your best choice for dinner. Dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. (which we thought was a bit late, but we are coming from a different time zone). They always had a variety of food. The breads and desserts are great. The service was fantastic.
We did try the Steak House one night and the food and service was good. The Mexican restaurant had a nice variety of appetizers and the tortilla soup was excellent. Their specialty is tacos – but others at the table who ordered them were not impressed. I ordered the Steak Monterey and my sister ordered the shrimp entrée – we both thought that it was very good. The only down side to the Mexican Restaurant is that service could have been better. We seemed to have lost the waiter – drinks were not refilled unless we asked
Drinks – The lobby bar is open 24 hours. They have great cappuccino and Latte’s. Try the Frozen Amaretto Sour, Blue Margarita’s, and Bahama Mama’s!
There is various entertainment in the lobby area each evening. We didn’t make it to any of the shows or the discotheque (club), but I heard good things about them.
Rooms – The huts style buildings reminded me of Mario Brothers Island game – or like Smurf huts – colored in blue and yellow. The rooms are small but comfortable. We stayed in rooms with the thatched roofs. There were geckos and some other visitors (which I will tell you about if you email me kenjess92@hotmail.com). It rained only one night and our daughter’s bed room roof leaked a bit. They offered to move her room or to change her sheets. She opted for the change of sheets. If you experience any problems, call the front desk, they will send someone right out. The beds were firm, but comfortable and clean. The safe worked well, but they could use a light in the closet – bring a flashlight. The air conditioner works off of motion – hang something from your ceiling fan to keep it going. We only had to do this in one of the rooms, the other rooms kept cool.
Each day housekeeping cleaned the room and most days left towel art – we had a swan, snail, peacock and heart. Also fresh flowers were placed on the bed and in the bathroom. We always left a few dollars for the maid.
The small refrigerator was stocked each day with 2 of each: Coke, Coke “Light” aka Diet Coke, Seltzer water, bottled water, Sprite and Dos XX beer. There is a 1 gallon jug of water in the bathroom for brushing your teeth. There was a mild musty odor in the room and bathroom but a scented candle took care of it.
Pool/Beach – The pool is great. The beach – lots of seaweed, but if you walk down a bit it gets much better. Bring swim shoes. People reserve chairs with their towels early in the morning and then never show up to sit out. My thought on that was if they weren’t there, I would move their stuff. If they showed up, I moved.
Excursions – We booked through Apple Vacations – they have a representative in the hotel each day to book tours and to take care of any problems we may experience. This is our second time we had Rosie as our rep… She is FABLOUS and took very good care of us.
If you do anything – take the Jungle Jeep Tour. It was $85 per person. Four people per Jeep (manual transmission) or Geo Tracker (auto transmission). First you will go and meet up with other people in jeeps. You will follow each other to a reef and snorkel first - $2 for a wristband into the reef area. The wristband is good for two days. They you will drive to a Tequilaria where they will explain the process of how they make tequila – and get free samples. From there you drive into the jungle portion of Cozumel – very bumpy, but fun. Not recommended for those with bad backs! You will drive to a beach and have lunch - chicken, rice, pico de gallo, guacamole. The guides of this tour are very fun! Beer, soda and bottled water is also included. Then you will drive to a small mayan ruin. The large mayan ruins are on the mainland, so don’t get disappointed! Once you leave the beach area you will drive around the south end of the island (beautiful beaches) and they take you to El Cedral which is another small ruin and tourist area. From there you will return to your hotel.
We also took the Snorkel/Snuba tour which was $70 for the Snuba or $45 for Snorkel. My sister and I did the snuba. They take you out of Nachi Cocom, a beach about 3 miles from the Iberostar, on a catamaran called the “Zorro”. Gary and Elardo were great. We went to three different reefs. We did snuba at the first one and then snorkeled at the other two. We saw star fish, a small barracuda, and a nurse shark sleeping at the bottom of the reef. They serve beer, soda, drinks with rum or tequila, fresh fruit and chips. At the end of the trip they play the Tequila song and go around and give you shots of tequila mixed with fruit juice. Very fun trip!
If you go downtown ($20 each way) – best shopping is at the Tree Top Emporium. They have a variety of hand blown glass, tequila (with the scorpion), homemade crafts, clothes and even a restaurant. We got dropped off their and made our way into the various shops. You can haggle on the jewelry in most shops. I saw an opal bracelet that I liked.... $185... $165... $135....to finally $95! You can talk them down.... just say no and start walking... the prices go down. The Hard Rock Café is the “smallest” one in the world. It is tiny. Lunch portions are huge! The “Kiss My Cactus” store has a bargain.... a bag, a liter of tequila, two shot glasses, a Mexican blanket and a single tequila with a worm...All this was $20 US. I bought two! Definitely stop by Carlos N’ Charlies or Senior Frogs for a drink. Get a shot from the girls with a whistle...its an experience! In the airport – at the duty free shop – very good tequila for $30 – Tequila Corralejo – tall blue 1 liter bottle...very smooth.
Overall another fablous trip to Cozumel. We will be back! Email me with any questions.
