“How it is”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2014

We were at Iberostar resort 01/25/14-02/01/14 in a group of 10 people.

If you have been reading reviews of this place for a while you will find that most people do like the resort grounds itself while the food is okay, and people are about 50/50 on liking the rooms. We all found this to be relatively true, and knew this prior to arriving. I personally thought the hotel grounds itself were very nice. There are quite a few employees working on upkeep and cleaning the rooms every day, I was quite surprised. Nightly entertainment starting at 9:15.

Rooms: I have no complaints with the room, it was cleaned daily, the bathroom was very nice, our AC worked great and was very cool all day long, nice quiet & private. Sure the beds are firm but we did not have any problem falling asleep due to being tired from being in the sun all day. Sure the rooms have a different smell due to the humidity, the ocean and being built in a jungle. Same smell down in Dominican – it’s the Tropics. But by the first evening we didn’t even notice it. I brought a plug in air freshener but I don’t think you need one.

Food: We’ll start with breakfast for obvious reasons. It is located adjacent to the lobby and officially opens at 7:00 (omelet maker makes her appearance) and it is buffet style with all typical breakfast food; omlets, bacon, fresh fruit, pancakes, French toast, waffles & American cereals – did I mention bacon? I thought it was good. Now let’s move on to lunch which is by the pool in the round building. Hot dogs, hamburgers, grilled pork (good flavor), salmon, pizza (pre made crust – not good) salads, fruit, dessert, and ice cream. Not bad the first day but it was the same every single day. By the end of our trip everyone was kind of eating just enough to get by. This meal was really where they could improve. Finally Dinner, 3 restaurants and 1 buffet. We ate buffet only the first night and it was good. I do believe they have a different themed buffet every night. The Rock Star Restaurant came on the second night (American Style) I had the salmon and it was good. Next we ate at the Steak House 3 different nights. I had the Top Sirloin which everyone thought was very good!

Random Tips: You get 1 towel card per person when you check in and exchange them for a towel by the pool bathrooms. I suggest getting new towels at the end of the day so you can go place them on chairs prior to going to breakfast to secure a place to sit for the day. Towel place opens at 8 I think and half of chairs will be taken (especially pool side). The plug in’s in the room are horizontal. To eat at the 3 restaurants you have to make reservations in the lobby from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm. I suggest getting there about 8:45 as the wait can be about 30 min.. We ate one night at Alberto’s beach bar, a short walk through dried seaweed on the beach (200 yards up the beach). They have good food for about $10 + a plate, although the drinks are spendy. You can go snorkeling off the steps at the end of the pier, many fish to see but no coral or anything like that. To actually see stuff snorkeling you should go out with Dressel Divers or Albertos beach bar up the resort ($40 per person, 3 hours includes water and beer) We went diving with Dressel Divers and they were very good and took us to great places, we booked prior to the trip and had they were expecting us and had no problems. $20 cab ride 1 way into town for 2 people, $60 for 10. Overall if you know these things prior to going and don’t expect Tempur pedic beds or 5 star meals you can have a good time and remember the people working there have very little and work hard.

Room Tip: Rooms on the outer edge will have less activity away from main walking path. We had Room #7303 and i...

I haev stayed at the adjacent Occidental Grand and Allegro in the past so this was a new experience. First the service was excellent, polite helpful staff. The rooms are starting to show some age but no complaints. The resort is quaint for 80+ rooms and a couple of cottages housign groups. Teh foor was plentiful and a B to B+ , I would say good value for the price but nothing special. The pool and the beach were lovely and loaded with friendly social guests. Free drinks may help with the sociability but they are weak so it takes effort to go overboard. There were only one or two cases of a few youngsters exceeding their limit. Again staff was great. My only negative was they allowed guests to put a towel down and reserve a pool lounge at 8 am and not show up for 4 hrs. Not a smart practice.

Room Tip: I prefer having no one above me so a 1 story is a plus or at lease request the second floor unit in...

Dear Customer

The Iberostar Cozumel staff and the management we like to thank you for choosing to stay with us for the first time and for the time invested in writing your comments for us and the rest of the online community

We are thrilled to read that you really enjoyed the service of our staff, the beach and the pool area.

In reference to your comment about the guest that reserved the lounge chairs we like to clarify that the hotel policy is that we do not permit to reserve the lounge chairs in the pool and the beach area. In every palapa you can find a sign in the different languages that informs our clients about this particular issue, we apologize for the inconvenience this caused.

We look forward to your next visit to our hotel in the future.

My husband and I travelled with 5 other couples to this resort for the first time. I loved it ! beautiful resort, great food , very friendly staff. Best excursion was renting jeeps and exploring the entire island . stopped at local pubs along the north shore "Coconuts" was a hoot! delicious food and great fun. I'd do it again in a minute!

We go every year with friends and we totally enjoy our stay. We extended our trip this year to 10 days which worked out better for us and allowed us to spend extra time snorkeling, shopping the market in town and exploring the island in our rented Jeep without giving up our time on the beach. It is the most casual, stress-free vacation spot. We meet new friends each year that we keep in touch with. We love the staff although they have had a lot of turnover this year. The only downside is the beds need new mattresses and the bedspreads could use updating. I would recommend it to anyone except those who want to spend time in the ocean. The coast is extremely rocky and really not good for swimming or wading.,,, beautiful to look at from a beach lounge though!

Room Tip: Stay near the pool or beach. All rooms are good.

The staff was very friendly and helpful, the grounds lush and well maintained, and the food was decent. My biggest disappointment has to do with the bedroom units: they smell very musty and lack ventilation, and our balcony railing had a gap big enough for a child to fall through. The bedrooms were kept very clean but the lobby cushions are in need of cleaning. I don't think that this resort deserves its 5-star rating. It is dated, and in need of repairs. Having said that, it has a relaxed atmosphere, a nice pool, a good beach, and great access to diving.

It took away the adventure of going and exploring. Next time I will rent a house but this place has activities for kids constantly. It is also on a sandy beach and the food was easy. No driving just stayed on property totally different vacation but that's what all inclusive means. If you want to go to a resort with kids.

This is the 4th AI in Cozumel we have stayed at and definitely our favorite here. It has a great location, close to great reefs for diving and set in a beautiful jungle-like area. It is set on a decent sandy beach, but unfortunately there is some flat coral all along the edge which makes it pretty much impossible to enter the water unless you go very slowly and wear water shoes. Most people entered the water via the ladder off the dock. Which is ok compared to other resorts in Cozumel. We have stayed at some where you must cross the road to get to the beach..to me that is not ok! So at least it really is right on the water. We didn't try upgrading our room but did see some rooms with ocean view and almost right on the beach. All rooms seemed the same as we traveled with a group and got to see everyone's room. Very small but perfectly clean. Iberostars always seem to have nice bathrooms in their guest rooms, and this bathroom proved true to that with a nice walk-in shower and large counter tops. The food was fine...definitely better at the specialty restaurant. We ate at the Steakhouse (a buffet during the day) and the food was great! Our only complaint was the super cold fans blasting us. We dove with a local named Sergio whose info we got from another TripAdvisor reviewer. He picked us up off the beach as there is a charge to use the private resort pier. I can give you more info on our dive trip if you message me. We also walked out of the resort past the front gate and rented mopeds for our group this way rather than going thru the Tour Desk arrangements at the hotel. We rented 5 so paid $30/apiece (not including insurance). We rode around the island and stopped at a few different bars and spots on the beach, which is a must in Cozumel. You can keep the mopeds for 24 hours, but we asked them to come back at 6pm to pick them up. We had no problems; I can also tell you more about this if you like. We showed our marriage certificate upon check in (we were married 5 months ago at Iberostar in Jamaica) and got some nice extras in our room including flower petals trailing to the bed, "Love" written in flower petals on the bed, chocolates, and two "just married" t-shirts. We didn't find the Star Friends to be as involved as they were at the Rose Hall Suites (or at the next resort we switched to after this...Iberostar Quetzal on the mainland). The night shows were not always great...but they showed a lot of promise with the aerial act where they climbed and twirled on silks hanging from the ceiling. I always comment on the sleep quality as I am a light sleeper...we had a room on the ground floor with one above us, but the a/c always runs, and I never once heard any of our neighbors! Beds, fairly hard but clean and always pooped so sleep well. Check in/out was fine, bar tenders and waitstaff great, cleaning and beverage stocking always great. Dos Equis beer served here, yum! The grounds are clean, and we love the flowers and different trees and animals. Enjoyed walking the bridge to the lobby and checking out the iguanas and flamingos on the way. Also saw lots of peacocks! No one in our group of six ever experienced any issues. One person purchased wifi which worked great for him. We also wanted to stay on the mainland, so we were only here for three nights, then took the ferry to Playa and stayed at Iberostar Quetzal. I would really recommend splitting your time between resorts if you can...nice to shake things up, experience more than one place, and made the vacay feel longer! Also nice to stay at Iberostar as there are NO TIMESHARES!! Very important to me cuz I hate being hounded and feeling preyed upon on our trips! If we stayed on Cozumel again, we would stay here again if something could be done about the beach entry into the water.

Room Tip: Depends on your preferences. Rooms are in 2-4 room bungalows, two stories high. Stay on the outside...
