We were at Iberostar resort 01/25/14-02/01/14 in a group of 10 people.
If you have been reading reviews of this place for a while you will find that most people do like the resort grounds itself while the food is okay, and people are about 50/50 on liking the rooms. We all found this to be relatively true, and knew this prior to arriving. I personally thought the hotel grounds itself were very nice. There are quite a few employees working on upkeep and cleaning the rooms every day, I was quite surprised. Nightly entertainment starting at 9:15.
Rooms: I have no complaints with the room, it was cleaned daily, the bathroom was very nice, our AC worked great and was very cool all day long, nice quiet & private. Sure the beds are firm but we did not have any problem falling asleep due to being tired from being in the sun all day. Sure the rooms have a different smell due to the humidity, the ocean and being built in a jungle. Same smell down in Dominican – it’s the Tropics. But by the first evening we didn’t even notice it. I brought a plug in air freshener but I don’t think you need one.
Food: We’ll start with breakfast for obvious reasons. It is located adjacent to the lobby and officially opens at 7:00 (omelet maker makes her appearance) and it is buffet style with all typical breakfast food; omlets, bacon, fresh fruit, pancakes, French toast, waffles & American cereals – did I mention bacon? I thought it was good. Now let’s move on to lunch which is by the pool in the round building. Hot dogs, hamburgers, grilled pork (good flavor), salmon, pizza (pre made crust – not good) salads, fruit, dessert, and ice cream. Not bad the first day but it was the same every single day. By the end of our trip everyone was kind of eating just enough to get by. This meal was really where they could improve. Finally Dinner, 3 restaurants and 1 buffet. We ate buffet only the first night and it was good. I do believe they have a different themed buffet every night. The Rock Star Restaurant came on the second night (American Style) I had the salmon and it was good. Next we ate at the Steak House 3 different nights. I had the Top Sirloin which everyone thought was very good!
Random Tips: You get 1 towel card per person when you check in and exchange them for a towel by the pool bathrooms. I suggest getting new towels at the end of the day so you can go place them on chairs prior to going to breakfast to secure a place to sit for the day. Towel place opens at 8 I think and half of chairs will be taken (especially pool side). The plug in’s in the room are horizontal. To eat at the 3 restaurants you have to make reservations in the lobby from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm. I suggest getting there about 8:45 as the wait can be about 30 min.. We ate one night at Alberto’s beach bar, a short walk through dried seaweed on the beach (200 yards up the beach). They have good food for about $10 + a plate, although the drinks are spendy. You can go snorkeling off the steps at the end of the pier, many fish to see but no coral or anything like that. To actually see stuff snorkeling you should go out with Dressel Divers or Albertos beach bar up the resort ($40 per person, 3 hours includes water and beer) We went diving with Dressel Divers and they were very good and took us to great places, we booked prior to the trip and had they were expecting us and had no problems. $20 cab ride 1 way into town for 2 people, $60 for 10. Overall if you know these things prior to going and don’t expect Tempur pedic beds or 5 star meals you can have a good time and remember the people working there have very little and work hard.
