We stayed at the Iberostar from 5th July-19th July. We went as a family of four (2 adults and 2 teenagers) and we always find trip advisor helpful, so here is our review!
We flew with First Choice from Gatwick, the check in was quick and we upgraded to premier, as it was a 10 and a half hour flight, and it was well worth it. I would recommend this to anyone.
When we landed we had a long wait because we had to get our immigration forms signed, so you must be patient. A good thing is that the airport is air-conditioned, so you are not waiting in the searing heat!
When you go through, you must ignore all of the porters and time-share people, as they will just waste time and money.
We were met by First Choice reps and were quickly directed to a minibus which took eight people to the hotel. The transfer time is about 20-30 mins, depending on how many other drop offs you have.
When we arrived at the hotel (after a 20 min. transfer) the check in was swift and we were given a welcome drink that was refreshing after the journey. We had emailed the hotel prior to our arrival and did not get all that we had asked for. But they did do their best to swiftly rectify this.
THE ROOM
We ending up staying in block 71, which is very nice, because it is close enough and far enough away from the pool. Ignore other reviews about the size, true the rooms are smaller than some, but they are fine, and it’s not like you are going to spend your whole day in them anyway! The lights in the bathroom are very good, but it would be nice to have a light above the mirror on the dressing room table.
THE POOL
There were always plenty of sun beds and umbrellas around, even in the middle of the day, so you don’t have to go out at the crack of dawn to go and get one! But I must admit, it was nice to sit outside at 7 in the morning, with a cup of coffee and not be attacked by the blazing Sun. The towels which you get given are fine and the staff around the pool are great. A special mention must be said to the drinks girl, Janeth, because she was always asking us if we wanted a drink (every 15 mins!!!). There is also a swap-a-book library at the towel place, so if you have run out, you can always find another one there, generally a girly trashy book! The criticisms are that they play the same music everyday and that the pool is not refreshing from 3 o'clock onwards, it becomes more like a bath.
BEACH
The beach was lovely, with lots of sun beds available. It was a shame that the sea was rocky. You could walk along the pier and go swimming there, and also feed the fish, and maybe even see "Belinda the Barracuda". You don’t really need beach shoes, just be careful. You can use kayaks and sail off the pier; you just have to get the lifejackets from the dive centre and probably pay the $2 marine park fee.
DIVING
The diving was fantastic. The visibility was over 25 metres everywhere which meant that you could see everything. The coral was magnificent with many coral gardens and coral walls. You can see all sorts of marine life as well, including, turtles, rays and sharks (6 foot plus!!!). We dived with "Dive With Martin" and they were fantastic. They are an off-site dive group who pick you up from the pier at around 7:50 - 8:05. The time on the boat to get to the dive sites is 10-15 mins. Fantastic. All the gear is good quality and all of the divemasters are superb, really safe. They have a longer safety stop than usual; I have no problems with that. One thing I will mention is that the crew aboard the ships do not get paid a lot, if anything and they do expect a tip. We gave $10 a day, but others (Americans) often gave $20. It is perfectly possible to book back in the UK. Overall, we paid about £300 ($600) for 5 days each, meaning that we got 20 dives. Very very good value, £15 a dive with equipment. I would recommend them over dressel any day, they are cheaper and the boats are less crowded, there were 6-8 on our boats, compared to the 20 on the dressel boats!
MAIN BUFFET RESTAURANT
There was a wide variety of food and always quite a decent Mexican section. The food is on a sort-of weekly rota, but some is fortnightly. So you don’t get bored. It is also not cramped, so you can move around when you go up and get your food.
MEXICAN RESTAURANT
We went to the Mexican twice. We think it was better than the steak house. It is nice to have waiter service and be in air con. The prawns were good and so were the beef taco and the red snapper. The Mexican Restaurant also does lunch from 1.pm. This makes a nice change. It is also buffet style.
STEAK RESTAURANT
This is at the snack bar which turns into the steak house in the evenings. The second time we went the steaks were much better. The rib eye is better than the sirloin. There are also prawns and chicken.
SNACK BAR
This is down by the pool and is very good. You can get breakfast here from 10 -12. So if you like your lie-in this is for you. Then you can get lunch from 12.30 till 5.pm which is buffet so there is always some thing that you will like. There are burgers, hot dogs, nachos, chicken etc.
LOBBY
This was nice place to sit and have a drink in the evening, and I must say the drinks are the best here. The champagne cocktails went down a treat; just make sure they are not Kir Royales.
STAR FRIENDS
I must say I have never seen people work so hard. I take my hat off to them. Entertaining all the guests during the day. Then putting on shows every evening. We are not much for shows but the musical, Mexican, and the movie night show were really very good.
Overall we had a fantastic holiday and would recommend it to any one. Would we go back? Yes we would. Just wish that the flight was little shorter!
