We traveled to the Iberostar Cozumel with 2 other couples February 17th – 26th.
I had read a lot of reviews on trip advisor so I felt well prepared for most of what the resort had to offer.
As we entered the open-air lobby we knew we were in store for a week in paradise. Check in was a breeze taking less than 5 minutes. We had requested to be near each other as well as king-sized beds. Judith, front desk manager did her best to accommodate our request. She actually had all of us in building #36. Two couples ended up in building 53 and one in building 36 since nobody wanted to forgo the king-sized beds. Although it sounds far away we were only a minute walk from each other’s room. Our building, 53 was the farthest from the beach & pool, but closest to the restaurants, spa & gym. Again, only a two-minute walk to the beach. We actually liked it a lot since it was very private & quiet.
The grounds are amazing, beautiful flowers and wildlife and spotlessly clean everywhere.
I have to say that these people are the hardest working people I have ever met. Beginning with the front desk, to the maids & groundskeepers, to the bartenders, waiters (especially Jose Manuel a.k.a. Pepe & Carlos) to the Star Friends (Gugas, Cait, Irene, Milagros, Pastor, Marina, Luis & William). They work from early morning to late at night making sure the guests are happy. You will notice small wooden containers along the pathways for your empty glasses & trash. It just amazed us at how clean everything was here.
We enjoyed getting to know the Star Friends. They were always trying to get you involved but were never pushy about it. I enjoyed hearing where each of them was from and about their lives. Cait, from NY actually went to college with our son in Pa. And grew up 90 minutes from were we live. It truly is a small world. Check out the shows in the evening. They work so hard and it shows. Ask Marina if she is the “star” that evening. Usually Irene liked to tell us that SHE was actually the star and not Marina. You be the judge!
The rooms were exactly what we expected. Nothing fancy. It serviced its purpose. After all you are not on vacation to spend time in your room. We requested 3 extra pillows and they were delivered to our room promptly and the beds were nowhere as hard as described. In fact we had no trouble sleeping at all. The room does not have a dresser only small shelves in the closet. The fridge was refilled each day with soda pop, beer & water. We left a tip each day for our maid & she took very good care of us. Each day she surprised us with cute towel art. The room did have a musty smell at times but, I brought a small bottle of febreeze and a scented candle and it did the trick. Plugs are a problem. They only have 2 in the bedroom & one in the bathroom. (The TV is plugged into one & clock in the other) We brought a couple of grounded extension plugs. We did have a few problems in our bathroom. It took almost 10 minutes to get hot water in the shower & we did have some small insects flying around but, they didn’t bite and after a day or so we forgot about them.
The food was pretty good. Breakfast was the best. We enjoyed the omelet station.
We ate at all 3 restaurants and enjoyed each one of them. Try the Rock Star Café. We thought it was really underrated. We had a great meal there. In fact they ran out of something we ordered and invited us back for dinner again. So we were able to eat
al a carte 4 nights instead of three. Carlos, one of the waiters had us doing shots of Cucarachas & Slammers!! Ask him about them. They are not very strong and it’s a lot of laughs. They light the Cucarachas on fire and you drink it through a straw!!!
We ended up spending most of our time at the beach since pool chairs were very hard to come by. When we did finally get 6 chairs by the pool we decided that we liked the beach atmosphere better and returned to our favorite beach spot. The pool bar gets pretty rowdy around 5 o’clock. The beach is very rocky so you will need water shoes to enter the water. None of us were bitten by sand fleas. If you’re prone to being bitten by bugs that you may need a bug spray. Speaking of bug spray… they spray the grounds periodically for insects and if you happen to be out for a walk you may want to take a different path since you will feel like you are in the middle of dense fog.
We took a snorkel trip with Dressel Divers and I would not recommend taking the trip unless you are assured that you that they are only taking snorkelers out that trip. There were at least 10 divers and 17 snorkelers and they definitely caterer to the divers. We were in about 30 feet of water much too deep for snorkeling. We did see a nurse shark, a stingray & sea turtle along with all the divers beneath us!! We did complain and they apologized but did nothing to accommodate us.
There are 2 jacuzzis located inside the Spa. You can reserve them for ½ hour periods. They are actually outside but you must walk through the spa to get to them. They are very private surrounded by trees and flowers. You can’t take drinks with you and they are only available until 7:00pm when the Spa closes.
My husband hurt his knee playing soccer and a phone call to the front desk precipitated a call back from an actual Dr. He had my husband see the paramedic on the resort and ordered an ace bandage for him from town. It arrived around 10:00am and after 48 hours he was back playing again. So we don’t have any complaints about seeking medical attention either.
We were all sad to see the vacation end and agreed that 10 days is the perfect vacation since it takes you a day or 2 to get acclimated. Try the Iberostar Cozumel. You won’t be disappointed.
