This was our second visit to Mexico, but our first to Cozumel. I was really looking forward to staying at an Iberostar resort as the examples we had seen on the mainland looked absolutely fantastic! Overall I can say I was somewhat disappointed with the accomodations but very pleased with my experience.
CHECK IN: Check in was a breeze. They brought us yummy fruity drinks while we waited and they were a welcomed quencher from our thirsty plane ride from the dry north. The hotel lobby is very beautiful and makes a nice impression upon arrival. The scent of fresh lillies wafted through the air. There was some confusion when we checked in with our party of 6 and 4 of us were in one bungalow and 2 were in another clear across the resort, but I think the error was partly our fault as we all checked in at once but the desk clerk didn't seem to notice we were all together.
ROOMS: The rooms are all set in bungalows with 4-8 rooms each. One couple requested to be on the upper level (there are only 2 floors) and that was obliged. We were placed directly below them. It was a little tough to get our luggage in through the swinging glass paned doors as the small balcony was filled with a table, chairs and a hammock, but we managed. However, the room had a very strong odor of mold/must that permeated all of our clothes and belongings. (Even on the plane home we smelled of must and our luggage stunk up our bedroom at home we when arrived.) Using the hair dryer was out of the question as it just blew stinky musty damp air that made your hair smell. The rooms were very damp, causing the smell, and also making it difficult to get bathing suits to dry out or towels to hang dry. Hanging items on the outdoor railing was out of the question as our building (65) was the permanent roost for the peafowl who reside at the resort. As a side note, the other couple we were with got a room in building 33 and did not experience the musty smells we did. Their building was out in the sunny areas whereas ours was in the shaded "jungley" areas, so that may have made all the difference. The beds were pretty hard, I wont lie, but after snoozing all day in the comfortable chairs in the pool, I didn't mind the bed. However, the pillows are as flat as a pancake and they only give you three. We asked for two more and they were delivered within the hour and they left them for the duration of our stay. The bathroom was mediocre, no seat in the shower, a somewhat leaky toilet and kind of small. However, there were soap and shampoo dispensers in the shower and plenty of complimentary toiletries. There was a nice closet with shelves and hangers in the room so we could unpack our clothes. There was also a safe which was free to use. The minibar was greatly misrepresented as it is not a minibar in the sense of a liquor dispensing cabinet, but a tiny refrigerator with pop (yes I am a midwesterner), beer and water. This was stocked every day as we tipped well. The TV was an older model and the volume changed with every flip of the channels. There was not many English channels but we did manage to find a movie every night (ignore the Spanish subtitles) and CNN in the mornings. Our room was kept very clean and we were greeted with fantastic towel animals and chocolates everyday. But, we did not go on vacation to sit in the room, so let's get to the rest of the resort....
POOL: Many have said the pools were small. -I don't necessarily agree. I would say, however, that the pools were laid out in a terrible fashion. There were two pretty large pools, one on each side of the swim up bar. One had a net for water volleyball and was also the site for water aerobics, water polo, water basketball, etc. Often two activities would be going on simultaneously, making it quite crowded. The other large pool was used mostly for scuba lessons, but there was always tons of room on that side. There was a very small shallow pool with pool chairs in it, but reserve them early because there are not many and they become scarce in the hot sun. The unfortunate part is this area is 2 feet from the kiddie pool, so be prepared to get splashed and listen to whining all day. Also, when the sun gets too hot in the chairs you have to get up and walk down to the other pool area to cool off. I know, I know, if this is our biggest worry we don't have much to complain about, but we have stayed at other caribbean resorts and the shallow pool is connected to the regular pool making it possible to basically roll out of your chair and into the swimming area. We were also somewhat disappointed there was a lack of waitstaff to come around and take drink/food orders at the pool, but again, who can complain that you have to get up to get food. Possibly that is why we Americans are so fat, we don't even expect to have to walk to get more food.... But you did have to dry off before entering the poolside bar for drinks or walk across the pool area and swim through the deeper pools to reach the swimup bar.
BEACH: Stay off the beach. I planned to use the beach as much as possible because it is so beautiful with chairs under the palms, over looking the gulf. -A perfect place to relax, read a book and listen to the waves come in, or so I thought. The sand fleas were terrible! There was a disclaimer in our check-in paperwork warning of the fleas but they said they fumigated everynight (which we witnessed). However, they exist. We did not notice them at first, it takes 1-3 days for the bites to well up and itch like crazy. Once we had this figured out we carried bugspray with deet to the beach. But when one would crawl up on us we could spray him directly and it made no difference. I have been home for 5 days now and still have itchy, welty bumps all over my legs. My coworrkers don't know what to think of me itching at my desk all day!
FOOD: I have read/heard lots of complaints about the food, but I have none. Yes, the food is bland, the same everyday, and a bizarre mix of flavors/origin. Its no different than the buffet in the dining hall at a big ten university. Everyone can find something to eat and keep full on. I have been to resorts where the food was inedible and trust me, its miserable to spend vacation hungry. You wont go hungry at Iberostar. I highly recommend the Steak House. The tenderloin is to die for and they even bring out a deep-fried onion like the "Bloomin' Onion" at Outback Steakhouse. It was very good and they brought an extra one (but not two) when asked. I do not recommended the Mexican ala carte restaraunt as none of us were impressed. It was basically buffet food served individually. Keep an eye out at both buffets for key items like guacamole, pico de gallo and fried mozzarella sticks. -We lived on these!
DRINKS: Everyone says the drinks are weak and the liquor low class, and that is probably true. But honestly, after about 3 days I cannot handle slamming drinks every ten minutes and basically drank in moderation for the rest of our stay. The drinks were not a big deal. I do recommend the Sangria however, it was muy fantastico!!
ENTERTAINMENT: The StarFriends were fantastic. We especally loved Luis who sought us out night after night in the lobby and day after day in the pool. He was quite funny and very interesting to talk with and learn about what it is like to work at the resort. My husband had a crush on Cait for sure, the only American on the StarFriends team. The nightly entertainment was great, they definitely work very very hard. Yes it was somewhat cheesy at times, but entertaining nonetheless. We were there over Superbowl weekend and although we did not care much about the game, they did show it on a big screen for any football fans that were there.
EXCURSIONS: One of the couples that was with us participated in the free scuba lessons and the snorkeling. They said they had a fantastic time and wished they could have scheduled more for earlier in our stay. We saw many, many divers there, proving it to be a true diver's paradise. We took a cab into downtown San Miguel one day. For the 6 of us to take a van-style cab it was $36 each way. We tried to bargain this price but apparently they have set prices established on the island. We loved town, there was great shopping and we enjoyed the food at Carlos and Charlies (it was wild, fun, fantastic time but this review is about the resort, so I will not go on, but I do recommend it). There were many other excursions to choose from but all 6 of us have been to Mexico before and had no desire to spend tons of money on all the touristy things to do. We were there to enjoy the warm sun and the cool drinks.
CHECK OUT: Check out was a breeze. It took about as long as it did for me to type this sentence. Turn in your room keys (2), towe cards (2) and you are good-to-go.
Overall the resort was average. We have stayed in Palace Resorts before and this was definitely no Palace. However, the price was significantly less than a Palace and so I feel we got what we paid for. I have no regrets. I probably would not return to Iberostar Cozumel, or the island of Cozumel for that matter. I think I prefer the main land (Rivera Maya, Cancun) more. I suppose divers would appreciate Cozumel more, but since that is not my thing, its probably not worth it for me to go back.
