Stayed at the Iberostar December 1 - 8. What a great place. We have stayed at other places in the past, but after the first day, we agreed that we will never stay anywhere else. I will say that if you are looking for a crazy party type atmosphere, this is not the place for you. This resort is laid back, with an emphasis on relaxation.
Check in is a breeze. Plenty of staff and the bell boys deliver everything to your room. The grounds were beautiful, with iguana's, turtles, a birds everywhere. The pools were clean, with one side for activities and the other for relaxation. Always plenty chairs and shade. Pool towels are big, so you don't need to waste luggage space by bringing your own. Clean bathrooms off the beach bar, pool area, theatre area, and the buffet restaurant. My wife liked the spa and the gym had lots of equipment. The gift shop was stocked well and we were suprised that the prices were reasonable. **To keep from having to walk back to your room, bring cash or a CC with you, as they don't let you put gift shop charges on your room. You can charge spa treatments and pay at the end.
The rooms are one or two story villas, with hammocks and chairs on every porch. They are little small but they are set up nice. Always had hot water. The air was as cold as you wanted and their was a ceiling fan in the room. There was a built in hair dryer and an alarm clock. There are only 2 electrical outlets that I could find, so if you have a multi plug that you can take along, it might help you out. The mini bar had 4 bottles of water, 2 bottles of coke, beers, and canned Sprite and diet coke replaced every day at no additional charge.Yes, the beds are hard, but they have been hard at every resort we have stayed at on Cozumel and Playa Del Carmen. The safe in the room is electronic and you put in your own code, which means you don;t have an extra key to carry and/or lose. The room keys are the card type, not a key on a lanyard like most places.
Bottled water. Their was a gallon of bottled water in the bathroom and In the restaurants and bars, you will see them using the big 5 gallon jugs of bottled water. We had no problems of any kind.
Food. The breakfast buffet off the lobby was quite good. For lunch, you can eat at the buffett or you can eat at the snack bar by the pool. If you have stayed at other all inclusives, this is not your normal snack bar. It is a large hut with tables and chairs and they have a wide selection from 12:00 to 6:00. Burgers, pizza, salad, pasta, fruit, nachos, desserts, etc., all served buffet style. We found this snack bar to be better than most resorts regular lunch buffet. At night, this is the steak restaurant, which was excellent. Long pants are required, and jeans are acceptable. The mexican restaurant looked nice but we didn't bring any dress clothes, so I'm not sure how good it was. Reservations are required for the steak and mexican restaurant. **You can make reservations starting at 9:00 a.m. in the lobby. They don't have to be for that day only. you can go in on a Monday and make a reservation for Friday night, etc. The dinner buffet was good and we always found something we liked. Wine is served every night. The buffet and the snack bar have great ice cream. No machines. They are built into the dessert bar with 3 big tubs. From 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., you can get late night snacks, with a good selection. The restaurants all have plenty of tables, so you never have to wait. The seating is also spread out so you don't feel like you are sitting on top of someone. You will be given a guide when you check in that lets you know the dress code for all the restaurants. No tank tops at night and something over your bathing suits is the only real requirement for the buffet.
Bars. No complaints at all. The lobby bar serves all drinks in glasses and is open until 12:00 a.m. The swim up bar and the beach bar are well staffed. Of course they use plastic cups but they are not the little dinky ones like you see in some other resorts. There is another nice bar over by the outdoor theatre, which serves out of glasses and is open around 6:00 p.m. Disco is open until 2:00 a.m. with a big bar. It is in a secluded area, and we never heard noise coming from it.
The Beach. If you stay in the sand, you don't need any shoes. Chairs everywhere. Once you get to the water, have some shoes on or you could cut your feet on the rock and coral. The water is beautiful and there are shells everywhere. For sunset, bring some bug spray. This is the tropics, and when the sun goes down, you can and will get some bites. The pier is awesome. There is a ladder at the end and you can snorkel all around the area. There are beautiful fish everywhere and if you are lucky, you will see the resident barracuda. The pier has lights running along the bottom and at night you will see even more fish.
Diving. Used Dressel, the onsite operator, and they were great. They have plenty of storage space, so you don't have to haul anything back to your room. Big, well equipped boats and they don't crowd you in. They have a big board out front where they post the upcoming dives, so you already know what boat you are on and who you are diving with. All the dive guides were good, but Rachel was our favorite. With the resort being down towards the south end of the island, we never had a boat ride over 10 minutes long. In most cases, you get to come back to the pier between dives for bathroom and drink breaks, but regardless, there is fruit and water on all the boats. The staff sets up your gear and gets your weights before you even leave the pier. If you are wanting to learn how to dive, they have a real training set up in the pool. This isn't like some resorts where their is a guy in the pool with a tank asking if you want to try. They are the real thing. **If you book an additional dive or service, bring cash or CC as they cannot charge things to your room.
Cabs are $17 each way to town. May be a little pricey but this is the farthest resort south. Makes it nice though because most of the cruise ship excursions don't want to come down this far, so it keeps the resort that much quieter. I would recommend having the cab drop you off at the square. That way you are in the middle of the shopping and can walk back towards the cruise ship pier and catch a cab back from there. if you are going to rent a car, do your shopping then and the round trip cab fare you would have spent will pay for most of your car rental.
Entertainment staff. The Star Friends are the hardest working group I have seen at a resort. They do pool activities for both adults and kids during the day, put on a show each night, and close the disco down. There is music around the pool area each day but it is not blasting you away like some places. You can hear it if you are setting on the activities side but on the other side, its low enough that you can't even make out the songs. The staff doesn't harass you into doing the water games or beach volleyball. They might ask, but don't bug you to death. The shows are good. Every other night is crowd participation. The theatre is open air with plenty of seating and a good bar. The show starts at 9:15 (atleast this time of year), so you have plenty of time for dinner and the temp has cooled down a little.
We rented a jeep and went around the island. Don't be afraid. Thrifty rental is right there on the resort and all the vehicles were in good shape. Get the full coverage plan and you have nothing to worry about. Traffic on down to the south end of the island was minimal. At the tip of the island, there is the Bob Marley bar. Pretty cool place with a beautiful view of the ocean. Punta Sur is right there and you can go up in the light house, take a boat right to see the salt water crocs, and do some snorkeling. **If you snorkel at Punta sur, they take you by truck over to the beach and the truck only runs so often. Plan it out so you don't get stuck because you definately want to see the rest of the island before dark. Up the east side of the island you will see some of the most beautiful coast line in the world. You can stop every so often and walk out on the beach. They have the big rocks that go out into the water and make for great pictures. Again, traffic is not an issue. Even if you are not hungary, you have to stop at Coconuts. It is an open air restaurant and bar on top of a bluff. It is not fancy but the food is great, the drinks are better, and you will not believe the view. Once you get into town, the traffic gets crazy. Cabs and scooters everywhere. If you are not comfortable in traffic, ask the guy at the car rental desk and he can show you how to avoid most of the traffic.
Bring some water shoes, a little bug spray, and remember to carry cash or CC with you for the gift shop. Other than that, you can't go wrong with this resort. If you have any questions, I would be glad to try and help.
