When I began looking for a hotel in Cozumel, Hotel Flamingo seemed perfect for what we are looking for: safe, clean, close to nightlife, and reasonable price. We always like to find smaller places were the staff is more personable, they treat you like you are home rather than just a room number. The only real downfall to Hotel Flamingo is that it is not within walking distance of any beach. I did the math though and it was cheaper to rent a car or take taxi's than pay the outrageous prices to stay on the beach. Although we had to do some driving to get to the beach during the day, the location was perfect for nightlift. There were tons of things to do downtown that were all within walking distance.
Hotel Flamaingo's grounds were very relaxing and we really enjoyed our room as well. There was an Ipod docking system/alarm in our room so we could listen to music and just relax while we were getting ready for the evenings out. The only complaint I had about the room itself was that there was very minimum space in the bathroom to lay toiletries. We could really only have out what we were using that second and then had to put it back in our travel bag. I did make this suggestion to Thomas, the owner, and he said they have already corrected this problem in a couple of rooms and plan on adding extra storage and shelves in the others rooms in the future. The girls at the front desk were helpful whenever we were looking for a particular type of restaurant or needed directions to somewhere.
There were two things at Hotel Flamingo that made our experience unforgettable, we hated to leave them behind. One was the amazing breakfast offered in the morning. You have to book directly with the hotel rather than an outside agency to get the breakfast complimentary. My husband and I both agreed that the Flamingo had the most amazing breakfast we have ever had. We normally like to sleep in while on vacation and just move right on to lunch. I had read it was good but words cant express how great it really is. So we made a habit each morning of getting up early just for the breakfast. The second was the amazing bartender, Ivan. We only got to spend two nights visiting with him but it was some of the most pleasant conversations we have had while on vacation anywhere. The conversations were not the only thing Ivan had to offer though, he made amazing drinks to go with them. We were sad to leave Hotel Flamingo and even more sad to say goodbye to our new friend. I hope we can cross paths with him again someday.
We are not travelers that normally repeat a destination, however if we ever return to Cozumel, we will definitely be visiting Hotel Flamingo, their wonderful breakfast, and the amazing bartender, Ivan.
