This hotel is MUCH better than it's star rating.

My wife and I started with a 4 day reservation (Feb 15th) for a 2 week stay on the island so that we could have plenty of time to evaluate where on Cozumel we should spend the rest of our vacation. We found that staying the whole 2 weeks at the Flamingo was a deal could not be beat.

No, not a 5 star resort, but this hotel does a lot for a very attractive price (under $75 a night). This 3 story hotel is built with most rooms facing a central courtyard with a fountain. There are some rooms on the ends of the courtyard that have small balconies. The courtyard rooms are shaded, quieter and darker while the balcony rooms are bright, get more noise from the street (it is a fairly quiet street though) and get more heat from the sun. The rooms have nicely updated equipment. New A/C units (worked great), new cable TV's, new bathroom fixtures, etc. Most rooms have 2 double beds but they found us a room with only one bed which gave us some added floor space that was nice.

The hotel is located 2 blocks from the main Plaza in San Miguel (5 minute walk) and it is just a bit further to the ferry dock. It is a couple of blocks from the waterfront and although there is some sand on the rocky shoreline, I would not call it a beach. The location is perfect for enjoying the restaurants, festivals, bands and services of the main town. We were here during part of the annual Carnival celebration and almost every night there was free entertainment on the plaza in the form of bands, Carnival costume contests, dancing contests, fire dancers, etc. so we had a great time and the hotel was a perfect base to operate from.

Restaurant (The Aqua) was great. Our room included a free breakfast that included eggs and tasty fresh orange juice. I loved their chicken burrito (best i've ever had).

Service was very personal and friendly. Tom the owner and Rosie helped us with every need from finding a rental car to great restaurants to finding fun things to do. David at the bar became our friend and even whipped us up a special gourmet dinner in the kitchen one night. Housekeeping was very good. I dropped a wad of about $70 in pesos one night. I had forgotten all about it the next day until we came back in the afternoon to find that the maid had carefully put it back on the nightstand for me and had even declined to take the $3 maid tip we had left for her because it was not in the envelope meant for tips to the maid. I think that is very rare to find this kind of honesty in other parts of Mexico.

Negatives? Almost none. There is no pool or beach. The rooms are lacking dressers (Tom, the owner says he is working to add them in the near future). Each Saturday a live band really rocks the place and we loved it. Others may not. The hotel is not fancy but does everything else very well for a great price.

We booked part of our stay through an online booking engine. I would recommend that you email Tom the owner/manager, and ask if he can offer you a special rate for the length of your stay. I think you will get a much better deal than is available through the booking engine.

If you are looking for a good hotel stay in Cozumel, I recommend the Flamingo.

I first stayed at the Flamingo in Dec. 1997. Had a great time then, even before it was remodeled. Now with a nice club the place is even better. Tom is a great guy who has a great desire to please his guests. The hotel is in a great spot close to the heart of town. I will stay at the Flamingo anytime. See ya'all soon.

I have stayed at many small hotels in the playa del Carmen and the Cozumel area and I was clearly impressed with this one. The staff and service was great- people were really nice and cared about your stay. The food was also excellent. Not only did I have the breakfast each day which was incuded, but I tried the dinner menu a few nights and was really happy with the dishes. There are some nice restaurants in Cozumel within walking distance of the Flamingo, but I found myself coming back and trying new things at hotel restaraunt that they call Aqua. Third, the rooms are really spacious and comfortable. I see that they have done some remodel work as the bathroom was brand new and rooms had just been retiled. I also like the extra touch of the new egyptian cotton bed sheets, it was really nice and unexpected.

There are either nicer places to stay or cheaper places depending on what you want so why stay here? We booked this hotel through a travel site. When we checked in we were tired and ready for bed. It turns out most of the rooms are within open earshot of the bar. There was loud music playing until 11:30 even though the hotel policy was quiet hours after 10. The music was so loud that I couldn't hear the TV in our room even though it was cranked. The toilet plugged on the first use. When we complained to the manager he seemed nice and said we could check out the next day and he would only charge us for one day. We worked this out with the travel site which said this was OK and we didn't need anything from the manager. They said they would get a fax from him. It took a month of pestering for the travel site to finally squeeze the fax out of the hotel manager. We found a much better hotel for the rest of the trip that only cost about $10 more and it was on the beach! There are much better places to stay than this, don't waste your money.

Management response from Thomas Fryer, Owner / Operator

I remember this particluar sitaution and I believe it was back in November. We have live music only once a week on Saturday night and we run it from 9pm to 11pm. This is a very popular evening for the guests to come down to the bar and enjoy the music. People are on vacation and want to experience some of the local culture.
These partiuclar guests arrived late while the music was going and were tired due to the long trip. We apologized and explained that we only do this one night a week and it ends early. This reservation was paid in advance by one of the major online sites and we are under no obligation to give a refund unless we cannot provide a room, but I determined that no matter what I was able to offer to them, they were not going to be happy. I made this decision to be helpful to them and wanted them to enjoy their vacation.
It is actually the online sites that have more of a problem giving a refund. This is lost revenue for them, especially if leave the hotel and go to another that is not part of their hotels that are offered. I do not get paid by the online site until well after the guest has stayed, so there is no advantage for me to delay any information for the site to make the refund. I think the problem here is that these particular guests were looking for another type of property to stay at. We can not appeal to all types of guests. We have a particular market that is looking for a nice place to stay, has moderate rates, convenience to things in town, and that offers an atmosphere that is social. My perception was that these guests were looking for more of a secluded place on the beach.

I spent the week 17-24 Sept. 2005 at this nice Colonial-style "boutique" hotel in conveniently located in downtown Cozumel, 1/2 block from the beach. The highlight of the hotel is its staff, led by the vivacious Rosie! The owner/manager, Tom, a great guy, is very much present to help and ask if everything's satisfactory.

The hotel's lobby bar & reataurant, Aqua, is a comfortable hangout for locals and guests alike, and the restaurant presents a meal delicious to the eye and palate! Caribbean jazz and blues played on weekend nights add charm and fun to this pictoresque patio atmosphere.

The rooms are clean and comfortable, but need some rennovation.

(I might suggest diver-friendly cleaning area for gear on rooftop patio, and/or hooks in the ample bathroom shower area for drip drying.)

Overall, I would definitely return and recommend this hotel for its comfort, charm and value.
