Second stay at right-sized smallish, older, classic architectured landscaped Villablanca. Hub & I brought our teen boys for two weeks at VB for much-needed, long-saved-for vacay from cold rainy Portland. No place is perfect for all, so VB should be avoided by hard-partying loud "Hey Pedro, gimmie another brewski NOW!" tequila swilling Americans disrespectful of Mexican/Caribbean culture, people & reef environment. VB is about lying around pool or garden reading, napping & casually conversing with fellow travelers or practicing Spanish between the fantastic diving, wonderful snorkeling or 40 peso taxi trips to town, renting jeep to go around the island (Chen Rio rocks!) or catching iquanas on camera by the tennis courts and the tiny cenote on the grounds. Snorkeling across street is fine, easy entry shallow reef on par with more developed shore snorkel spots on Coz - though mending slowly from very harsh scrub by Wilma. Or try Dzul Ha or closer Sunset Beach beachside "clubs". VB pool is on small, cool side and there's only tiny poolside bar & grill but it's enough to keep guests fed and watered (or cerveza'ed). I'd avoid overpriced new restaurant, Nemo's until they get real. Hotel grounds and building had a facelift and staff had a 100% turnover after Wilma -- like many places on Coz. I missed some people (Nancy DeAnza) but found new staff kind, helpful and attentive if treated respectfully. And big new hot tub is good addition for sore muscles.
Re/ prior comments about slow breakfasts, I was there the same morning and recognize the author. Quiet smart cook Jose is great with what he has to work with - but slower than American fast food standards if orders overwhelm his tiny grill & kitchen. Rude diners (not necessarily the author) changing orders late in the game created a chain reaction that slowed things down that morning in particular out of 14 mornings we breakfasted there. Once Temptations restaurant across street reopens that should help. Native Canadian Papa Hog's is fine and has decent food and OK prices on cubano cigars. And great boat snorkel trips though we couldn't dive. Taxis plentiful and topes (speed bumps) slow traffic down by hotel. I love the shark over the tiny "lobby" building and glad Wilma let her live!
Superior rooms are great. Ground floor has good access and small patios but upper levels have little balconies. Suggest laundry line strung between columns for drying suits & gear. Bottled water & fridge for Chedraui runs are great, TV not so much. Damp clime grows minor mildew here and there but after some airing of long-empty room ours improved. I'm extra-sensitive to mildew but was OK after a day of airing. Bugs were there before people so a few are to be expected in the jungle so get over the few tiny buggers. Big tile tub, big bathroom & big comfy chairs A+. Hot showers A- for hard water. Hard mattresses and worn poly-blend bedspreads C-. Clean white cotton sheets & towels B+. Dirty/rusty hard-to-reach AC is a D- but fans were fine in Feb, if not June.
