I stayed in a Standard room at the Villablanca for five nights in mid April, and was not disappointed. I think much of the perception of this place has to do with what kind of expectations a person goes in with. A few things a person should keep in mind before booking at this hotel - 1)It is in MEXICO. Expect that all amenities available at US hotels will not be available here, and that some conditions may not be ideal. 2)It is a 3 star HOTEL, not a 5 star RESORT. 3)It is inexpensive. You get what you pay for.
With that said, I really liked the Villablanca. I have stayed at All Inclusives around Mexico that were more luxurious and offered more amenities and entertainment, but this is the first time I truly felt that I was in Mexico, and I liked that. The small size of the hotel provides an opportunity to get to know other guests (I ran into the same people at breakfast each morning, and got to know some very interesting people that way), and the grounds although minimal are very charming. Also, contrary to other reviews I have read, I found the staff to be friendly and accommodating at all times. All of my questions were answered and all requests accommodated. I also liked the fact that purified water is provided in the rooms. I typically spend quite a few pesos buying bottled water during my trips, but not this time. The location of the Villablanca is nice... walking distance to town provided you are relatively healthy (probably a mile and a half or so). I walked there and back each morning, and really enjoyed the walk. There are also a couple of restaurants very close - one next door and one across the street. Don't miss the sunset at the pier across the street. Snorkeling off the shore across the street is great as well, and if you aren't up for schlepping your snorkeling equipment to Mexico, they will rent you the gear for $8 for the day.
Now, the downside. My advice to those considering this hotel is to upgrade to the deluxe room. I was in a standard, and do agree with other reviewers who indicated that the decor in the standard rooms is somewhat dreary. Also, the first room I was given was infested with spiders - I killed 20+ within the first couple hours I was there. I reported this and was moved to another room that had fewer spiders, but still enough to give me the willies. (but again - this is the Mexican jungle - you have to understand that you might need to share your space with some creepy crawlies). I spoke with others who were in deluxe rooms who had not seen any spiders. The air conditioning in the second room did not work; however, the room was cool and comfortable most of the time I was there (I don't spend much time in the room during the day), so I did not insist that it be repaired. As others have mentioned, the pool is a little murky. It is swimmable, though.
Overall, I think the Villablanca's 3-star rating is accurate, and it is a nice place to stay if you are interested in experiencing the character of Mexico. I had a wonderful vacation and plan to return to this hotel next year (in a deluxe room!)
