This was our first trip to Cozumel, and we were looking for a quiet, beachfront hotel. The free golf was a bonus and I wanted to take advantage. Overall, we really enjoyed Playa Azul, and I would not hesitate to stay here again if go back to Cozumel.

The rooms were large and had nice ocean views with a nice patio area. We were on the 4th floor in the middle of the hotel, so we had a perfect ocean view. Amenities were good: safe ($50 deposit), TV, dresser, luggage racks, hair dryer, hangers. We were disappointed there was no iron, but they do not advertise one, so our fault for not realizing this. We bought a $7 iron in town that worked fine for our trip. The room was a little hot the first day. We literally ran the A/C nonstop for 8 days, and were never cold. It felt fine after the first day, since they leave the rooms open when guests are not there and they take a while to cool down. There were no ice machines, you had to go to the bar to have them get ice, which was odd to me, but no biggie.

The breakfast buffet was great. Eggs, bacon, sausage, other hot foods, yogurt, bread, cereal, milk, OJ, coffee, and granola were the staples. The staff was very friendly. Watch out for the birds!

The beach restaurant was awesome. Great prices and great food and service. The fish tacos were amazing. Great spot for a quick lunch or snack during your beach day.

The free snorkel gear was a nice bonus since there are a lot of fish in the water near the hotel. We did this several times and really enjoyed it. The water sports staff was great.

Taxis were easy to get, and the fare was $5 each way downtown and back for a 5 minute or so ride.

The golf was fantastic. The course is well maintained and nicely laid out. You will be challenged but will have fun as well. I usually shoot in the mid 80's and shot 83 and 84 at the Cozumel Country Club. Saw lots of wildlife, including crocodiles. You just have to pay $25 for the cart which is a bargain if you stay at Playa Azul. Range balls were $4 and drinks on the course were $2-4. It's a 3 minute cab ride from the hotel.

Also had fun feeding the turtles out front. There are at least 20 in the little area and they like food.

The hotel was very quiet and the staff was great and friendly. My only changes would be to install an ice machine, keep the rooms cool when a guest first arrives, and put irons in the rooms. Minor things - you will love this hotel and have a wonderful time!

  • Liked — Quiet, relaxing hotel experience
  • Disliked — Room was a bit warm even with A/C for a while

We stayed as this wonderful small hotel the first week of August 2008. Our overall experience was wonderful. The hotel is quiet, the staff is friendly and attentive and suites in the original wing are spacious and comfortable. While the decor is not 5 star luxurious it is quite nice, colorful and bright. The front desk staff was very helpful and friendly. They cheerfully fulfilled our every request. The room air conditioning worked very well and ran quietly even though we had it on most of the time.
The small beach area was well manicured. The hotel rooms look out on the beautiful blue water. The palapas were always available and there are two convenient bars in the beach and pool area. Daily breakfast was good with a nice variety of choices and great service. Yes, the beds are a bit firm but fine for us.
We dove with the on site dive shop and were pleased with their service. We were a mixture of experienced and new divers. For the experienced diver wanting to dive every day it is a bit of a long boat ride to the southernmost dive sites from the hotel but OK for 2-3 trips south. Good dive masters but you can't fully dive your computer.
We would be happy to go back!!

  • Liked — Large rooms (suites), friendly staff, quiet, reasonable price for value received.
  • Disliked — Long way from southern dive sites, bill hard to decipgher on checkout.

Great experience and value!!! This is definitley off of the beaten path...which was great because the cruise ship areas were generally packed with people. Wonderful and helpful staff, great rooms with views of the bluest waters you'll ever see. We brought our children, ages 9 and 13 - they had an amazing time too. There's so much to do! Snorkeling is right at the beach! You get a free hour everyday. We rented the snorkeling sets from the hotel for 2 complete days as we drove all over the island and found wonderful spots to stop and swim/snorkel. We rented a car (right across the street) and went everywhere! It is a little hot, so you might opt for a car with air conditioning, which we did. Right away you will see how this great little hotel has won many awards - these awards are posted in the lobby.

We...
Snorkled, deep sea fished, parasailed, shopped - tourist spots and local stores (like a Wal-Mart), drove all over, visited many restaraunts, swam all over!, fed the turtles at the resort, exercised along the ocean front, visited the "lighthouse"...I cannot list all of the things we did! So much fun! And we always felt safe.
We travel all over the Carribean - this is the safest we have ever felt! :)

Have a great time!! Rent a car (our first time to rent one...but the island is sooooo safe - you'll miss out on many neat adventures if you don't) the taxis are fairly expensive.

You might want to bring your own pillow. The pillows at the resort we VERY large and stuffed.

Wonderful hotel, beautiful view from 2nd floor corner ocean view suite. Complimentary breakfast was delicious great variety of delights. All the staff were extremely helpful and we were always treated like special guests. Front desk staff went out of their way to get any information we requested and met all our needs. Free wireless internet made making arrangements and sending picture e-postcards fun and easy. Small quiet facility so never felt crowded. Pool is a little small but with the ocean right there seemed to be hardly every used. Only problem encountered was room door needed double checking for closure and maid left it open slightly a couple of times, needed a new door knob. You have to feed the turtles out front, they come out of all their hiding places swarming to the watermelon. The spa facility was nice and clean with a lovely woman who makes you feel comfortable and relaxed. Enjoyed 2 massages, a facial, hair treatment, manicure and pedicure---A must visit. The restaurant was very good, excellent service and the food was good.

The dive shop (Pro Dive) was awesome, went on a dive trip and a whale shark excursion with them. Very attentive and their online customer service can't be beat. The on sight staff was superb, great guides for a dive or snorkle excursion.

Will definately stay there again on our return to Cozumel.

  • Liked — Best deal for room with seperate sleeping facility for teen and parents. Breakfast
  • Disliked — No activities for 19 yr old son at night - not many teens at hotel to socialize with.

Stayed with a group of 6 friends at the garden house at Playa Azul from 6/25-6/29. On arrival to the hotel we were impressed by the lobby and friendly staff. The view of the pool and the beach were impressive, but as we were escorted to the "garden house" we were disappointed as the house actually appears to be a converted trailer near the parking lot with a view of the back of the property. The inside of the "house" was clean and spacious, but the shower water was consistently cold and the location was awful. We enjoyed the breakfasts, snorkeling and the friendliness of the staff. The tiki beach bar served great drinks and we took advantage of the snorkeling from the dock. We ended up having a good time and from other reviews, it appears that the rooms may be a better option and I would avoid the garden house if I were to stay here again.

  • Liked — the friendliness of the staff
  • Disliked — location of the garden house
