This was our first trip to Cozumel, and we were looking for a quiet, beachfront hotel. The free golf was a bonus and I wanted to take advantage. Overall, we really enjoyed Playa Azul, and I would not hesitate to stay here again if go back to Cozumel.
The rooms were large and had nice ocean views with a nice patio area. We were on the 4th floor in the middle of the hotel, so we had a perfect ocean view. Amenities were good: safe ($50 deposit), TV, dresser, luggage racks, hair dryer, hangers. We were disappointed there was no iron, but they do not advertise one, so our fault for not realizing this. We bought a $7 iron in town that worked fine for our trip. The room was a little hot the first day. We literally ran the A/C nonstop for 8 days, and were never cold. It felt fine after the first day, since they leave the rooms open when guests are not there and they take a while to cool down. There were no ice machines, you had to go to the bar to have them get ice, which was odd to me, but no biggie.
The breakfast buffet was great. Eggs, bacon, sausage, other hot foods, yogurt, bread, cereal, milk, OJ, coffee, and granola were the staples. The staff was very friendly. Watch out for the birds!
The beach restaurant was awesome. Great prices and great food and service. The fish tacos were amazing. Great spot for a quick lunch or snack during your beach day.
The free snorkel gear was a nice bonus since there are a lot of fish in the water near the hotel. We did this several times and really enjoyed it. The water sports staff was great.
Taxis were easy to get, and the fare was $5 each way downtown and back for a 5 minute or so ride.
The golf was fantastic. The course is well maintained and nicely laid out. You will be challenged but will have fun as well. I usually shoot in the mid 80's and shot 83 and 84 at the Cozumel Country Club. Saw lots of wildlife, including crocodiles. You just have to pay $25 for the cart which is a bargain if you stay at Playa Azul. Range balls were $4 and drinks on the course were $2-4. It's a 3 minute cab ride from the hotel.
Also had fun feeding the turtles out front. There are at least 20 in the little area and they like food.
The hotel was very quiet and the staff was great and friendly. My only changes would be to install an ice machine, keep the rooms cool when a guest first arrives, and put irons in the rooms. Minor things - you will love this hotel and have a wonderful time!
