My fiance and I just got back from a great week in Cozumel at the Coral Princess. Enjoyed it so much, and gained so much from this site, felt obligated to share.
First of all, at the advice of some folks on this site, emailed the property in advance to get an ocean view room with a fridge. Both requests were accomodated. Had an Ocean View room on the 6th floor, and it was perfect. Balcony is pretty small (for a standard), but the view cannot be beat. Staff at the hotel were beyond friendly, and have nothing but nice things to say about all of them.
Room had a huge king bed, and a TV with a good number of channels in English believe it or not. You will come to know the words "Prime Time Warner Channel" while there, trust me...:) Fridge was big enough to stick drinks and snacks in if you needed to. You were typically given a big bottle of water at each maid cleaning (to brush teeth and what not).
You are given tickets for a free continental breakfast each morning (Toast/Pastries--awesome, Fruit, Juice, Coffee). For another $2.20 you can upgrade to the American which gets you eggs and bacon, sausage or ham. Word of advice, stay away from the sausage. It's just kind of like an undercooked hot dog. Overall though, the breakfast food was very, very good. We had a number of lunches and one dinner at the hotel. Overall found the hotel food to be above average. Also, happy hour outside at the palapa bars is from 5-6 each day and gets you 2 for 1 drinks. They have a band that plays also which is alot of fun. We found out the first day that during happy hour if you order a Dos Equis and a Pina Colada, that means they bring you 2 of each at once! Fun though.
Beach area is relatively small, but if you want a chair, some sun, and beautiful sights, it works out just fine. Never once had to fight for a chair. The snorkeling right off the hotel is amazing. Just hop right in and you see a TON of fish! We rented snorkeling gear right at the hotel for $7/each I think which gave us the equipment for 24 hours. Pool was small, but perfect to cool off in. Overall, our weather could not have been better. One day of rain, and even though it was warm, the breeze was awesome, and we never felt HOT!
We went on a snorkeling trip through Cozumel sailing, and it was by far our best day. Captain Dan runs a great trip. We left at 10 and were back at 4:30. Boat is really nice, and Dan and the crew were very cool. Got some great snorkeling in, a trip to a deserted beach, some spinnaker rides (like parasailing, but not as high), and some sun time on the boat. Trip included, beer, mixed drinks, soda, water, and a delicious lunch. They have two charcoal grills right on the boat and made up some steak tacos, chicken wings, pasta salad, fresh guacamole and pico de gallo. Trip was limited to 16 people which was perfect. Cost was $70 each, and I can't say enough about how nice this was.
Also rented a car for the day from JE rentals who have a booth right in the lobby at the CP. Cost for a 4 door Geo Tracker was $55 (included comp insurance), and then $6 for the gas I used. Driving here is easy! There are two main roads, and it is impossible to get lost. Went to the East side of the Island for a day to Bob Marleys and Coconuts. If you have ever seen the Corona commercials, it is alot like that. Just little places to grab a bite and some drinks and take in some amazing scenery right on the water. You DEFINITELY have to do this while in Cozumel. No power on that side of the island, and just very relaxing and cool.
Ok this is getting long. Real quick, we hit the following restaurants:
Lobster House- Best lobster I have ever had. Pick your own tail, and the ambience is very nice. In a large thatched hut, and candles everywhere. Lobster, veggies, bread, dessert, and a couple drinks for $75 total. One thing in Cozumel, got good bang for the buck (or peso!)
Guido's- Had lunch here one day, and liked it so much went back for dinner. Lasagna and the garlic bread they serve was delicious. Pizzas are also very good, was a nice break to get Italian food.
Carlos N Charlies-Fun for drinking and more drinking, although kinda pricey if you end up drinking a fair amount. You'll enjoy yourself more with a few in you for sure. Food was decent though.
Casa Denis-Unbelievably spicy pico de gallo! Very good though. Had the Shrimp Diablo which was tasty. Good spot to people watch.
Pancho's Backyard-Verrry romantic. Nice setting (part indoor/part outdoor. Try the enchiladas con como. Sauce is interesting, but very, very good. Make sure you only have one margarita, or else you will be stumbling home.
Tried to go to La Veranda but there was a wedding reception taking place...
Anyway, to summarize, Cozumel was incredible. You have to try the food, and do some strollin around San Miguel. People, scenery, weather and food were all perfect. We will be back. Thanks again to everyone for their input and advice.
