We spent a week at CP during the second week of Jan. This was our first time in Mexico. We picked CP because of the good reviews and good rates through Orbitz.
Our first impression of CP was actually not a good one. The hotel and elevators seemed more worn and older than we expected. Our studio did not meet our basic cleanliness expectations. The sheets and blankets had stains and holes. The room had a funny "not fresh" smell. I originally thought it was just our room, but having seen two other model rooms (through the timeshare presentation), we discovered that most CP rooms have this smell.
Furthermore, there seemed to be a problem with the plumbing system. Sometimes, the shower and toilet drains would make a loud splashing and bubbling sound as the result of some activity from floors above. This ranged from annoying to scary (when sitting on the toilet).
The staff was friendly but the waiters in the restaurants were slow and disorganized at times.
Luckily, our experience with the hotel grew better over time. We purchased an air freshener of the wall plug-in type at a local store, and that solved the smell problem. We just learned to live with the other annoyances.
Overall, we had a great time. Snorkeled alot and saw lots of colorful fish. We will definitely return to Cozumel, but probably not stay at the CP again.
A few tips and comments about Cozumel:
- Definitely rent a car for at least a couple days if you're staying a week. You can get a Chevy with AC for $35/day (insurance optional) at CP rentals downtown, which is a 50% discount for rentals of 3 days or more. Just google to their web site, print the rates, and bring the printout to the shop to get those rates. (Warning: most cheap rental cars are equipped with a manual transmission. Make sure to ask if you can only drive automatic).
A car allows you not only to discover the gorgeous winward side of the island, it also lets you explore each of the beaches on the west side. An alternative is a scooter, but we had lots of bags and snorkel gear so a lockable car trunk was really necessary.
- Take the ferry (cheap at $2/person one-way) and spend an evening in Playa Del Carmen. On their main strip (5th ave, I believe), we've never seen so many restaurants and shops on the same street! It goes on and on for 16 blocks.
- Pay in pesos whenever possible. Most merchants and taxis use 10 pesos per USD for convenience, but the actual 11/USD rate means you come out ahead. You can withdraw in pesos from multiple ATM sites.
- We tried a different restaurant each day. La Morena downtown serves great and well-priced seafood. The food and service at the French Quarter were excellent. In general, stay away from exotic drinks like Pina Colada and "Mango Margarita". They taste horrible, as Cozumelians tend to make those drinks with artificial flavoring and lots of sugar. Margeritas, beer and sangrias were consistently OK, though not great.
- If you like snorkeling, Pepe Scuba's $25 tour is really worth it. The guide brings fish food, so you're guaranteed to be swimming among hundreds of fish.
