This was our eight vacation to Cozumel (6/8-6/14) and the first time staying at the Coral Princess. It was not our first choice in accommodations as over the years we have found our favorite place to stay, but with the economy being such as it is, we needed to find the best deal we could, and overall we were very pleased with our accommodations and the value we received for our dollars spent. This year Orbtiz had the best deal for us, so I booked a package through them. After receiving our confirmation number, I e-mailed the hotel with a few requests: ocean view room, king sized-bed, non-smoking floor, and refrigerator, all of which we received. We were the only people checking in when we arrived, so that went very quickly, and our bags were taken to the room promptly. We found the people manning the front desk to be friendly and efficient. The room was beautiful, just what we were hoping for. The view from the 8th floor was spectacular! The only disappointment we had regarding the room is that the balcony is very small and not one that you can sit out on and enjoy the view, so there are no chairs or a table. It is simply a standing room only balcony. However, we have never stayed in a room that had as much closet and storage space, even in the bathroom and it was great not tripping over our suitcases and dive equipment all week. The refrigerator was large, not one of those small table-top kind, and worked perfectly, even the little freezer compartment. The king-sized bed was extremely comfortable and we were pleased to find two extra pillows in the closet. The room was cleaned thoroughly each day, and we always had enough clean towels, and of course they made us those cute towel animals. The air conditioning unit was very efficient and it was easy to maintain a comfortable temperature, and we liked the fact that it was operated with a remote control so we could adjust it according to the comfort we desired. All the furnishings in the room were new and in excellent condition. The bathroom was very nice with plenty of drawers for storage, and the shower (there was no tub) was large enough for us to rinse and store all our scuba gear in. Water pressure and water temperature for the shower was never an issue. It was always hot and plentiful.
Continental breakfast was included with our package. At check in we were given coupons for each day and were told how to use them (each one having the specific date on them). The breakfast consisted of fruit or juice, coffee, and a basket of warm, delicious pastries and toast. For $2.00 more per person we could up-grade to the American breakfast, which consisted of fruit, juice, two eggs (scrambled or fried), bacon, ham or sausage, and a small patty of hash browns, and the basket of pastries. We found this to be a very plentiful breakfast for us, so upgraded every day. The fruits are served sliced on a platter and usually were pineapple, melon, and mango or papaya. I also believe that if you cared for any of the other breakfast offerings you could use the face amount of the coupon ($6.00) towards that and just have to pay the difference. Our only complaints about breakfast was that the service was hit or miss--some days it was fast and efficient, and others it was painfully slow, and the coffee was disappointing!
Every day there is Happy Hour where drinks are two for one at two different locations. At the pool bar the hour is between 5-6 p.m. and at the inside bar it is between either 6-7 or 7-8 p.m. We were usually in town having dinning during the later hour so did not pay much attention to the time for that one! The drinks were very good, and around $5.95 total for the two during Happy Hour. Again, we were told about this at check-in.
The “beach” areas were fine with entry into the water by way of steps from which you jump into about 5-6 feet of water. We are divers, so this did not bother us at all. The snorkeling in front of the hotel was good. We were surprised at the many variety of fish we saw. The current tends to be a little strong here so snorkeling can be difficult if you are not a strong swimmer or are new to this sport. We usually started off swimming south into the current, and when tired just turned around and let the current bring us back to the hotel. The beach also seemed to be divided into two areas, one for smokers and one for non-smokers. We assumed this because one area had ashtrays on the tables between lounges and one area did not. We have a strong aversion to cigarette smoke and were happy that this was never a bother to us while on the beach or in any of the hotel’s public places. The occupancy of the hotel seemed to be very low during our stay, and at times we felt like we had the place to ourselves. We never had a problem getting lounge chairs under either an umbrella or palapa at the beach. At check-in we were given towel cards with the usual warning that if you lost a towel you would be charged $50. We never had a problem any time of the day getting a clean towel, and they were very nice, thick, quite large, and all seemed new.
We did not use the pools at all as we prefer the ocean, but although they are not huge, they are very adequate size and always seemed very clean and inviting.
We went into town every evening for dinner, so I cannot comment on the hotel’s restaurant for dinner.
Overall our impression of the Coral Princess is a good one, we enjoyed our stay, and we would not hesitate to return.
