This was our eight vacation to Cozumel (6/8-6/14) and the first time staying at the Coral Princess. It was not our first choice in accommodations as over the years we have found our favorite place to stay, but with the economy being such as it is, we needed to find the best deal we could, and overall we were very pleased with our accommodations and the value we received for our dollars spent. This year Orbtiz had the best deal for us, so I booked a package through them. After receiving our confirmation number, I e-mailed the hotel with a few requests: ocean view room, king sized-bed, non-smoking floor, and refrigerator, all of which we received. We were the only people checking in when we arrived, so that went very quickly, and our bags were taken to the room promptly. We found the people manning the front desk to be friendly and efficient. The room was beautiful, just what we were hoping for. The view from the 8th floor was spectacular! The only disappointment we had regarding the room is that the balcony is very small and not one that you can sit out on and enjoy the view, so there are no chairs or a table. It is simply a standing room only balcony. However, we have never stayed in a room that had as much closet and storage space, even in the bathroom and it was great not tripping over our suitcases and dive equipment all week. The refrigerator was large, not one of those small table-top kind, and worked perfectly, even the little freezer compartment. The king-sized bed was extremely comfortable and we were pleased to find two extra pillows in the closet. The room was cleaned thoroughly each day, and we always had enough clean towels, and of course they made us those cute towel animals. The air conditioning unit was very efficient and it was easy to maintain a comfortable temperature, and we liked the fact that it was operated with a remote control so we could adjust it according to the comfort we desired. All the furnishings in the room were new and in excellent condition. The bathroom was very nice with plenty of drawers for storage, and the shower (there was no tub) was large enough for us to rinse and store all our scuba gear in. Water pressure and water temperature for the shower was never an issue. It was always hot and plentiful.
Continental breakfast was included with our package. At check in we were given coupons for each day and were told how to use them (each one having the specific date on them). The breakfast consisted of fruit or juice, coffee, and a basket of warm, delicious pastries and toast. For $2.00 more per person we could up-grade to the American breakfast, which consisted of fruit, juice, two eggs (scrambled or fried), bacon, ham or sausage, and a small patty of hash browns, and the basket of pastries. We found this to be a very plentiful breakfast for us, so upgraded every day. The fruits are served sliced on a platter and usually were pineapple, melon, and mango or papaya. I also believe that if you cared for any of the other breakfast offerings you could use the face amount of the coupon ($6.00) towards that and just have to pay the difference. Our only complaints about breakfast was that the service was hit or miss--some days it was fast and efficient, and others it was painfully slow, and the coffee was disappointing!
Every day there is Happy Hour where drinks are two for one at two different locations. At the pool bar the hour is between 5-6 p.m. and at the inside bar it is between either 6-7 or 7-8 p.m. We were usually in town having dinning during the later hour so did not pay much attention to the time for that one! The drinks were very good, and around $5.95 total for the two during Happy Hour. Again, we were told about this at check-in.
The “beach” areas were fine with entry into the water by way of steps from which you jump into about 5-6 feet of water. We are divers, so this did not bother us at all. The snorkeling in front of the hotel was good. We were surprised at the many variety of fish we saw. The current tends to be a little strong here so snorkeling can be difficult if you are not a strong swimmer or are new to this sport. We usually started off swimming south into the current, and when tired just turned around and let the current bring us back to the hotel. The beach also seemed to be divided into two areas, one for smokers and one for non-smokers. We assumed this because one area had ashtrays on the tables between lounges and one area did not. We have a strong aversion to cigarette smoke and were happy that this was never a bother to us while on the beach or in any of the hotel’s public places. The occupancy of the hotel seemed to be very low during our stay, and at times we felt like we had the place to ourselves. We never had a problem getting lounge chairs under either an umbrella or palapa at the beach. At check-in we were given towel cards with the usual warning that if you lost a towel you would be charged $50. We never had a problem any time of the day getting a clean towel, and they were very nice, thick, quite large, and all seemed new.
We did not use the pools at all as we prefer the ocean, but although they are not huge, they are very adequate size and always seemed very clean and inviting.
We went into town every evening for dinner, so I cannot comment on the hotel’s restaurant for dinner.
Overall our impression of the Coral Princess is a good one, we enjoyed our stay, and we would not hesitate to return.

  • Liked — Large, clean room with plenty of closet space and nice view. Close proimity to town.
  • Disliked — Does not have a real beach.

THE PROS:
This was our 5th time staying at this hotel, the 1st after hurricane Wilma. They rebuilt the property beautifully. The staff was freindly as always and after a 3yr absence they actually remembered us. The food in the Buenaventura Terrace Restaurant was good and alot cheaper than in town. The drinks at the bar were $6.50 usd, a little exspensive for what you get. Always do happy hour (2 for 1) so it doesn't seem too exspensive. The rooms were clean and comfortable. We stayed on the 5th flr and had tons of water pressure and hot water. The workers never seem to stop cleaning the grounds, always spotless. The dive shop (PEPE SCUBA ) was better than I remember. We dove Columbia, Palancar, Punta Sur every day. In the past they would never take you that far. They would take you deep and fast so you would run out of air and they could be done. Not this time, a very enjoyable week of diving. Taxi rides to town were $4 usd or $40 pesos.
THE CONS:
We booked with Apple Vacations and when we were told we had a jungle view we were upgraded after some talking. One person in our group booked with Expedia and had the same issue but was told the upgrade would only happen after they paid $168 usd. The rooms have coffee makers but no coffee. You can buy it for $2 usd a bag at the desk. The on-site car rental was $100 usd a day, way too much. They won't give you change for dollars only in pesos even though they have tons of cash in the drawer. If you need change ask a bellman or waiter. They have USD due to tips. The merchants in town were VERY bothersome. I may go all-inclusive at at different resort next time just so we don't have to go to town to eat. The hotel food was good but not every night.

  • Liked — Cleanliness, staff friendliness

This hotel was average. Early in the mornings you could here employees working in the hallway, which was very annoying. The breakfast was pretty good. Lunches weren't good. We went into town for dinner in the evenings. Some of the front desk employees weren't friendly. The pools were alright. Snorkeling and diving was great! This hotel had a great view! We had a leak in one of the closets in our room. They were good about fixing it for us. Also, our water pressure in our shower was terrible! The maintenance guys told us that it was as good as it gets. When we went to check out on our last day, the front desk told us that we used our room phone to call someone in delaware, and the charges were $86, I argued w/them and said I didn't use the phone @ all the whole wk, they said they'd check into it. It had to be an employee. We did eat at some really good restaurants:

Espesias is good, LaCocay has great food! LaVeronda is excellent. Casa Mission is wonderful also. Just tell your taxi driver the names of the restaurants, and they'll drive you there.

My girlfriend and I took a last minute vacation to Cozumel a couple weeks ago before I started a new job. Deciding on a hotel was tough. I sort of wanted to be in town, but my girlfriend wanted a hotel with a treadmill so she could continue her marathon training (now that's dedication). So after doing a search for hotels with a treadmill, only a few came up and the Coral Princess was our choice. We were very impressed and each day we were there said "I'm so happy we chose this place". Just to give my review some relevance, I've traveled a fair amount (Europe, Africa, Brazil, Mexico) and have stayed in $5/night hotels in Africa and $1000/night hotels in Hawaii. So here I go:

There were so many great things about this hotel, but these are what we thought to be the best:

+ We thought the snorkeling was great...much better than we expected. It's roughly 10 feet deep where you get into the water and immediately you start seeing all sorts of fish. The water is so clear! I was worried the hotel would charge $15 for 2 hours for renting snorkel equipment, but we sure were surprised when when we found out it was only $7 for 24 hours. There is a catch though...we had to try several masks before finding one that fit and didn't leak. My advise would be to purchase a mask and snorkel before going on the trip. The flipper rental is $5 for 24 hours. The fish were beautiful! Among the common fish you might see snorkeling, we also saw a stingray, eel, and barracuda.

+ We upgraded to the ocean view and HIGHLY recommend it. As you can see from one of my pictures, the view of the ocean was unbelievable. I would recommend trying to get a high floor (we had room 710).

+ We really liked the location! It was nice and quiet since it was away from downtown, but only a $3 cab ride into town (not including tip). The taxis were usually there waiting so we didn't have to wait at all.

+ We booked the hotel through Orbitz and it came with breakfast coupons. We could have the continental breakfast for free (toast or danish -and- juice or fruit). It was usually enough to fill us up. We also had the americana breakfast a couple times for $2 more. It included eggs, bacon/sausage, toast or danish, and fruit or juice. Not sure why you couldn't get both fruit or juice...but I would get one and my girlfriend would get the other.

+ The hotel is very clean!

+ There's wireless in the lobby. You can also rent a laptop for $6/hour.

+ There's a sandy pool area which really makes you feel like you're on a beach. We actually preferred the rocky coastline versus a sandy beach.

+ You can purchase 1.5 liters of bottled water for $1 usd. We thought that was super cheap, but I suppose they don't want guests to be using the tap water and getter sick...not good for business.

+ Since you face west, you get a really nice view of the sunsets.

+ The staff was very friendly except for one person at the front desk. It wasn't that she was mean...just not that nice.

+ We were not bothered at all by the time share people.

##############################################

Of course this wouldn't be a review if I didn't list some negatives, so here's what we came up with:

- We had two double beds instead of a king and couldn't switch rooms because the hotel was full.

- Lunch was just ok. We only ate lunch there on the last day and probably could have done without.

################################################

RESTAURANTS:

We really enjoyed every restaurant we ate at for dinner and wanted to share them.

CASA MISSION: (Mexican) Maybe 10 blocks away from the ocean. One entree is plenty for 2 with all the fresh chips, salsa, guac, bread, and soup they bring out beforehand.

SORISSI: (Italian) Only 1 block from the ocean. Nice design/layout. It was fun watching the chef make pizzas in the brick oven stove. The pizzas were excellent!

PRIMA: (Italian/seafood) Open air restaurant on the 2nd floor. The blackened red snapper was delicious!
