My wife and I stayed at the Coral Princess Cozumel the week of March 1st. The hotel is unimpressive from the street, but once inside you are pleasantly surprised by the boutique style and French Riviera feel of the hotel and property. The hotel is very clean. Especially nice is the very short distance from the hotel to the pool, sand, then rocky ledge which drops off to 20 feet of clear beautiful turquoise water. We had a suite which offered plenty of room and nice modern furnishings with a small full kitchen.
Our only complaints with the room were; the shower drain did not work well even after 2 attempts by maintenance to fix it. We were in a bath of water every time we showered. The other issue was smokers in the adjoining non-smoking room on our non-smoking floor who not only caused smoke to flow into our room, but oddly also kept their room door open to fill the hallway with smoke. They were eventually moved after we complained 3 times.
Our only real significant complaints with the hotel in general which will keep us from returning were; the unreal disproportionate number of smokers, like 50+%. This was made worse by our smoking neighbors, the only hotel restaurant being all smoking, and the simple fact that you could not escape cigarette smoking anywhere, not the pool, not the beach, not even the Dive boat where one guy chain smoked and threw his cigarette butts off the boat into the same protected reef we had to purchase and wear national park wrist bands to dive in.
Let me be clear here. If you don't smoke this might not be the hotel for you. Also, the hotel is occupied by almost all Americans, so it's not as though you're in another country dealing with local smokers and smoking habits, these guest are all from the U.S.
The other main complaint was the practice of guests reserving lounge chairs very early in the morning with fins, not even towels or personal items hours before using the lounges. The hotel should remove these items and put a stop to this as it is very rude and unfair to guests. Also, the WiFi only worked the first couple days of our stay. I was really counting on being able to check my Email.
There are many things to like about the Coral Princess. The property is very nice, the onsite diving service offered by Pepes is excellent, the food and food prices are great, the rooms are right over the ocean, cheap $3 cab ride to town, nice staff.
Downtown Cozumel is a cruise ship nightmare with as many as 8 a day with merchants annoyingly preying on tourists relentlessly.
However, there are some great places to eat downtown.
Casa Mission offers excellent Mexican food and outstanding tableside desserts in a great patio setting with caged parrots. Pepes Grill has steaks that can easily compare to the best steakhouses in the States. Sorisi offers fabulous fine Italian dining in a beautifully decorated setting with a take out Gelato cafe too.
One last thing to know, half the hotel are Vacation Club(Time Share) owners.
Basically, if you don’t mind a lot of cigarette smoke, the Coral Princess is a wonderful hotel with excellent onsite diving, great snorkeling in crystal clear water steps from the pool, and reasonable prices for both accommodations and food. If the level of smoking toned down to even what we have experienced in France, and the only indoor restaurant was made non-smoking we might be back.
