My husband and I enjoyed this museum. I wasn't able to see all of the exhibits, which I will explain in another paragraph. We took a Royal Caribbean cruise that has a pier right in downtown San Miguel. We walked to the museum from the pier. Admission is $3 (they accept US dollars). The museum is air-conditioned. The museum is not terribly big which was fine with us as we wanted to do other things, too. They have signs in Spanish and English explaining the museum pieces. We really came to the museum for a quick demonstration on Mayan culture and artifacts so we thought it was neat that they had other stuff on reefs and paintings.
We found some pieces of coral with the word "labyrinth" in its name. My husband had brought his book of short stories by Borges so we laughed about that.
Because I was feeling dizzy, we went to the cafe on the 2nd floor to order drinks. The cafe is out on a small terrace which overlooks the sea. There was a breeze blowing which was quite nice. The menu was very cheap, and although the menu was in pesos, they took US dollars. I ordered a watermelon fruit water, and it was very good. I wished we had had more time to enjoy being out on that terrace.
By this time, I realized that I was dizzy because I was very dehydrated. I had to run to find a bathroom because I was about to get quite sick. Thank goodness the museum had bathrooms on the 2nd floor. They were labeled quite clearly.
So my husband and I left the museum to find Gatorade, which luckily was in a store near the museum. What happened was that I underestimated the temperature. San Miguel bakes in the sun because of all the concrete. I drank 2 glasses of water and a cup of orange juice on the ship that morning, but it turned out that that is not enough. I recommend that you buy a couple of bottles of Gatorade at a store as soon as you get off the ship and force yourself to drink it every 10 minutes. Otherwise your trip will be cut short. I came from Louisiana and mow grass in the sun all the time, but the sun in Cozumel is something else.
