Recently I prepaid a 1-night stay at the Hotel Cozumel because I was told that the hotel is popular with the divers. The hotel also makes the diving easy because of the close ties to Dive Paradise (on the premises). However, in comparison to The Park Royal (2 miles down the road), I found this hotel to be mediocre (see my other posting for the Park Royal). Like most of the hotels on the island of Cozumel, this hotel boasts of nice rooms, a large pool and other amenities, all for one “inclusive” price. The reality is that the hotel wanted to add an additional $160 to my prepaid price of $235. If I didn’t agree with the additional fee, I would then have to pay a la Carte for all of my meals. I promptly showed them my booking receipt, which showed “run of the house”. The staff told me “run of the house” only means that everything is included, except the food and drink. Yeah right! So what are they going to do? Stop me from using the pool? The reality is the phrase “run of the house” means they can include or exclude, at their discretion, the meals and drinks. I explained that there was no other way to book the reservations and that their website clearly states the room rates as “all inclusive”. Their room rates were also clearly posted at the check in counter at 1125 (or close) pesos, which is about $225. After much haggling, I was able to settle for an additional $90 (970 pesos). I was very agreeable to paying an additional $45 to match the price of the Park Royal (2 miles down the road), but I think gouging me for an additional $90 was a little over the top. I found the hotel very difficult to work with and $315 for a stay at the Hotel Cozumel was way too much for a place that was rustic and clean, but overall kind of mediocre. The food was good, but lacked variety and depth. The rooms were clean, but tiny and cramped. They boast the largest pool on the island, but this too is kind of old looking. Because they were always working on the area around the pool, I constantly had to watch for wet cement (once I stepped in it). In conclusion, if you are going to stay at this resort, be sure that upon check in you clearly understand that it is “all inclusive” by making certain they put a red arm band on your wrist (especially if you drink)! Any other color might exclude you from the use of the large pool that they are so proud of J If you are a diver and want to use Dive Paradise, it is just as easy to stay at any of the other resorts on the island because Dive Paradise will pick you up at any of the piers (docks) in front of the many hotels located up and down the coastline.
