We just spent our first week ever in Mexico. We chose Cozumel because we're divers. Well, we certainly picked the right spot. This hotel really does cater to the dive community. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean and well-kept. And having our dive operators, Dive Paradise, right on sight made it even better. Their service was top-notch!
The food was kind of hit or miss. Breakfast was great; always a great assortment of choices. However, unless you're a diver, you might want to wait until around 8:00 a.m. to have breakfast...that's when all the divers clear out to catch their morning dive boats. Lunch by the beach side restaurant was always very good. The snack bar the pool was a bit predictable, but still a good choice. If you arrived for a late dinner, say after 8:00 p.m., sometimes entree choices were a little slim. But the host/wait staff was always very engaging. By the 2nd or 3rd day, they were addressing us with huge smiles and our first names.
The island itself, though showing hurricane scars, was beautiful. Everyone we encountered was always warm and friendly. Renting a scooter to explore the island was money well-spent! And you're just a short walk from town. The island atmosphere is casual and laid-back; which was just perfect for us!

Stayed at this property April 6-10 for a dive trip. Overall, the hotel was nice. The grounds were well kept, the rooms were comfortable and nicely appointed, and the A/C was GREAT. The facility is great for divers. Lunch and dinner was so so and breakfast was average. The bartenders and bar service, however, were great. Beer always cold and they will make just about anything you like. Housekeeping did an excellent job as well. If you are looking for white sandy beaches and luxurious amenities, and you dont dive, you should probably go to Cancun. If you ARE a diver, the facility is just what you need. Save all the extra money for your dive trips. Also, the shore dive alone is great. Out about five feet and an instant dropoff to about 15-20 feet. Decent marine life to see right there in front of the hotel.

For divers, we used dive paradise, scuba cozumel, and scuba staff. Out of the three, scuba staff got my top vote. The boat was the least attractive, but our divemaster (Joshua) was great. His english was very good which made communicating simple.

Would stay again.

Cozumel Trip Report

Travelers: Me (Julie), my husband Tony and our friends Melissa and John. Leave Detroit on time and arrive in Cozumel 10 minutes earlier. Breeze through immigration; grab our luggage – then customs… Melissa gets the red light and searched. 2 minute delay and then on the van and our way to Hotel Cozumel.

Hotel Cozumel-

Rooms are nice. Believe it or not I thought the beds were actually COMFORTABLE… The Balcony was nice to sit out side when you have had too much sun. Bathroom had no ventilation.

Pool is awesome. By far the best thing at the hotel. The bathrooms do need some updating.

Food… sorry guys I have to disagree with the recent posts that the food was pretty good. I ate breakfast and even that was a challenge. Something about hot dogs in the buffet line…. For breakfast at that. Lunch by the pool consisted most days of the same things. French fries, chicken nuggets, nacho cheese from a machine, hamburgers, hot dogs, and usually a different choice of a stewish meat. Lunch on the beach was mostly the same with a couple of more options. Never ate dinner here but I thought they had a reservation place or something on the beach… Nothing like that this week.

One more comment on the food. If you were all-inclusive you could order room service but there was a $10 sur charge on top of what the price of the food was. European there was no sur charge. So I didn’t really understand that. But you could order lobster or shrimp by the pool for $16 each and there was no surcharge?

Okay hotel. I don’t like that its all-inclusive and European. Even though we were on the All-inclusive plan not everything is included which is fine for like lobster and stuff but not nickel and diming everything and also telling you when you can or cannot have a drink.

I think it’s an ok hotel the people were nice enough. I don’t normally stay in high end hotels in Cozumel so that wasn’t the reason for my dislike of the hotel. The hotel’s I previously stayed in were the Park Royal 3 times and the Casa Del Mar.

I think I am just done with all inclusives. I think next year I will stay in a Condo somewhere on the beach with a pool and go shopping for what I want and be able to have it when I want it.

Cozumel as a whole-

Totally awesome. I would not hesitate recommending anyone to go. The hurrican had no effect on our vacation.

We went Deep Sea Fishing with Wahoo Tours -- Caught a Mahi, and a Swordfish. Wahoo was an ok charter. Included one case of beer for 4 people and the first mate probably drank 3 or 4 of them. The snack for the trip was a Cantalope and a bag of lime potato chips. For $450 for a 1/2 thought we might get one more fruit or something. This was our first time though so maybe we expected to much. Didn't catch any fish until the last hour of the trip.

Cozumel Sailing- Will do seperate report but I can't say enough about this trip! Totally awesome day. Total worth the money.

Rented a cab for the day. and this was great. Paid $80 for 5 hours and it was totally worth it.

Ate at Tony Rome's twice and awesome both times. Also, took our Mahi their to have it cooked and they did a great job.

Ate at Prima's twice and it was great both times as well.

Great trip never rained once. Perfect weather all week.

We stayed Mar. 22-26, 2006. I would say the Hotel Cozumel is a nice 3-star resort. Your expectations have to be for a 3-star, not a luxury 5-star, or you will be disappointed The rooms were clean, the a/c and plumbing were fine, and we had a view of the pool, which many rooms do because the layout is a square of buildings surrounding the pool. The pool was nice, but there is a lack of shade since the palms are still growing back after the hurricane. The poolside snack bar was very mediocre, but the drinks were cold! Across the street at the beachside restaurant, you have lovely view of the ocean while eating lunch. The staff was very friendly and eager to please. One of the girls in the restaurant went back and brought me a sliced mango when I expressed disappointment that there were none on the breakfast bar. Each morning after, she greeted me as "the mango lady." The grounds are well groomed, not the prettiest on the island, but nice by Mexico standards. The biggest negative about this resort is the food. Very, very "hospital grade". Don't bother eating on Italian night. However, anything, especially breakfast, that is cooked up in front of you is definitely good. Good variety, good presentation, but I couldn't eat there every meal for 5 days. Much better food in town. And speaking of town, I like the location much better than the resorts farther down island. The square is either a 20 min. walk or a $3 cab ride away, and the dock across the street is perfect for diving excursions. I would stay there again.

I found Hotel Cozumel to be an excellent place to stay. The food, especailly the fresh fruti, was good and plentiful. The drinks were refreshing. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The air conditioning worked very well. And the staff is truly wonderful

My only complaint was a lack of shade. By the third day I was as tanned as I wanted to be. There was no real shade for the lounge chairs. There are three tables with umbrellas, and 4-5 tables next to the snack bar. But if you want to take a nap in the shade, you're out-of-luck.

There was never a wait at breakfast. I ate lunch everyday at 2:30-3:00 p.m. and never had to wait. (I heard from other people the wait at 12:30-1:30 was 30 minutes.) I never had to wait for dinner.

The dive shop across the street is very good. The grocery store down the street has anything you need.
