We stayed Mar. 22-26, 2006. I would say the Hotel Cozumel is a nice 3-star resort. Your expectations have to be for a 3-star, not a luxury 5-star, or you will be disappointed The rooms were clean, the a/c and plumbing were fine, and we had a view of the pool, which many rooms do because the layout is a square of buildings surrounding the pool. The pool was nice, but there is a lack of shade since the palms are still growing back after the hurricane. The poolside snack bar was very mediocre, but the drinks were cold! Across the street at the beachside restaurant, you have lovely view of the ocean while eating lunch. The staff was very friendly and eager to please. One of the girls in the restaurant went back and brought me a sliced mango when I expressed disappointment that there were none on the breakfast bar. Each morning after, she greeted me as "the mango lady." The grounds are well groomed, not the prettiest on the island, but nice by Mexico standards. The biggest negative about this resort is the food. Very, very "hospital grade". Don't bother eating on Italian night. However, anything, especially breakfast, that is cooked up in front of you is definitely good. Good variety, good presentation, but I couldn't eat there every meal for 5 days. Much better food in town. And speaking of town, I like the location much better than the resorts farther down island. The square is either a 20 min. walk or a $3 cab ride away, and the dock across the street is perfect for diving excursions. I would stay there again.

I found Hotel Cozumel to be an excellent place to stay. The food, especailly the fresh fruti, was good and plentiful. The drinks were refreshing. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The air conditioning worked very well. And the staff is truly wonderful

My only complaint was a lack of shade. By the third day I was as tanned as I wanted to be. There was no real shade for the lounge chairs. There are three tables with umbrellas, and 4-5 tables next to the snack bar. But if you want to take a nap in the shade, you're out-of-luck.

There was never a wait at breakfast. I ate lunch everyday at 2:30-3:00 p.m. and never had to wait. (I heard from other people the wait at 12:30-1:30 was 30 minutes.) I never had to wait for dinner.

The dive shop across the street is very good. The grocery store down the street has anything you need.

We will be staying at Hotel Cozumel for the 3rd time in June 2006. We WOULDN'T stay anywhere else on the island. It's true that Hotel Cozumel is not a 5 star hotel....In our hearts it's a 10 star for many reasons. We were on the island during Hurricane Emily in July 2005. It was an interesting experience that I wouldn't trade. We saw first hand how hard the Cozumel people worked to keep their guests and property safe. Keep in mind ALL alcohol sales/serving were stopped for 3 days. The Harbor Master shut down ALL water activity for 2 days. Also a good thing about Hotel Cozumel is that its an emergency evacuation shelter in case of a hurricane (only used if the convention center is over-occupied). The staff at Hotel Cozumel were absolutely wonderful during the hurricane. Meanwhile everyone that was staying at the Southern 5 star Hotels were bused in to town to stay at the Convention Center for 3 days. I spoke with many of them and they were not happy about leaving their 5 star to stay in a center. They couldnt believe we got to stay in our rooms during the whole thing. The staff brought up cold drinks and food to our room during the worst part of the storm. The next morning was a surprise with all the broken glass and stripped palm trees.....But hey we had 23 dolphins in the swimming pool. They were brought up from the chaccnab park to be safe. Needless to say we couldnt get a beer or swim in the pool but it didnt stop use from having a good time snorkeling in the ocean (which had debris in it). I can only give GOOD ratings for this hotel because they have done so much for us. The food is good (and im picky) but you can always find something you will like. Town is just a short walk or bicycle ride away. The beach area is small but once you get in the water and see ALL the fish then the size of the beach really doesnt bother you as much. My family stayed at this hotel for 6 days this April. We have been overall quite satisfied with the facility. We found our room thru the web for $113/nt tax included for me and my wife along with our 3 year-old daughter. The rooms are well-kept, clean, quiet, adequate, with clean white towels that are replenished/changed daily if needed. For the positives: location fairly close to downtown San Miguel, large clean swimming pool, kid's playground with staff to entertain kids with arts/crafts and such activities to keep them busy, fairly-professional staff (especially the front desk staff who are quite helpful). Negatives: local calls are not free and are expensive, ice machine(only one for the whole property so that if you stay at the opposite end of the building you will have to walk a bit to get to it only to find sometimes that there is no more left!), some staff are quite rude (my wife did not know that you need a card issued to each room to borrow a towel from the poolside; shortly after wrapping the towel around herself the staff took the towel away from her!!! TALKING ABOUT GOOD MANNERS AND PROFESSIONAL BEHAVIOR I HOPE THE HOTEL MANAGER IS AWARE OF SUCH BEHAVIOR.
After spending a week in Cozumel ( I chose to go there mainly for its diving) I do not think we will go back. The place is heavily touristed and the locals are definitely taking advantage of this and are charging more for what is reasonable in their country. It actually costs more to dine there than it costs say in the Florida beach towns. The diving was also not I thought it would be based on what I have seen in pictures. The rock formations are unique but they were lacking in color (at least, compared with some of the other areas in the world that I have previously dove).
