This was our first trip to Cozumel and we shook the dice with our accomodations. Overall we were very satisfied with our choice and will consider staying their again if we go back. We have 2 kids under 10 so our expectations are obvisously dif' from others. If you're looking for a 5 star resort (i.e. Hilton) this isn't it. If you're looking for value with above average accomodations (i.e. Holiday Inn) this is for you. The pool area was great, especially for kids. We've heard the pool area is one of the nicest on the island. There is a trampoline (with safety nets), a play area for small children, bar & grill, ping pong tables, tennis court, stage for evening entertainment, a small toddler pool, whirlpool, and a very large pool with varied depths for kids and adults. The nicest thing about the pool area is that it is a very large, enclosed area where mom & dad could relax and keep and eye on the kids as they did their thing. The "beach club" is on the water with a sandy area for lounging. There is a resturant/bar with a small swimming pool and a pier for snorkeling/diving. The shore is rocky but it was a good place for the kids/adult to snorkel. The rooms were ok and most of the rooms had balconies overlooking the pool area. Room was clean and maid service was good and reliable. Quality of the food was average; yet, it was very convenient with 3 dif' eating areas to choose from. Most days we ate lunch around the pool (hamburgers, fries, fruit,....). Also, food was always available so you could graze if you'd like. My children loved the freedom of eating when they wanted and the they loved the mango drinks! The staff varied - some were great and others seemed to be going through the motion. Most of the stafff went out of their way to give special attention to the children. The staff around the pool that was responsible for the entertainment was great. They were very outgoing and involved both the kids and adults with scheduled events (dancing, tennis, ping pong, pool volleyball.
There was planned entertainment everynight (mexican might, comedy, etc.) around the pool area. Most of it was pretty hokey but it was fun.
In summary, from our experience and talking to others on the island, for the value this resort appears to be the best. We heard of a couple of other resorts that were "nicer" but they were also twice the price.
Further, we talked to some guests that have been to the island 5-10 times and have stayed/visited at other resort and they prefer this resort for the casual atmosphere, staff, and pool area.
Other suggestions. You must rent a jeep for 1-2 days and drive to the other side of the island. There are about 6-10 small cantinas scattered on the beaches where you can hang out all day and play in the surf.
This side of the island (east) has sandy beaches and is very desolate.
Bring life vests for the children because the waves can get large and the undertow is strong.
Walk downtown to the square (City park) on Sunday evening (take a cab home for $5) and enjoy the local music in the park. The locals gather here every sunday evening and have been for almost 30 continuous years.
You can dance, eat/drink at a sidewalk cafe, or just people watch.
Take a snorkel trip in a glass bottom boat (great for kids and adults too). We made arrangements right at the resorts "beach club" and left right from their own pier. It was a three hour trip and we went to 3 reefs. We paid $30/adult and $20/child. This was a highlight for all of us.
Take a taxi to one of the beaches that are close to the resort. We preferred Paradise Beach because it was clean, new, and had water trampolines, and other entertainment options. When we were there it was free but this beach and others charge for a beach chair and umbrella.
They make most of their money from selling drinks and food.
