We stayed at the Hotel Cozumel from January 25, 2004 - February 1, 2004. The hotel was very clean and well kept up. Rooms were cleaned every day. There might have been a few minor things that they needed to fix or remodel, but they were minor and were just cosmetic things. The beds are on concrete pads, firm, but do able. They put egg crates on top of them that help. The advertising of the place on the net had said that the rooms had coffee makers, iron, and televisions in each room. We saw none of these until the last day when they put a television in our room--which didn't work. Some of the reviews mentioned a musty smell, which we did smell, but that is to be expected with being in Mexico, high humidity and bringing dive gear in the room. As we said, the maids came in every day and cleaned up, taking care of all the wet floors that we had every day from us. We did come back to our room one night to find that they had spayed the baseboards of our room with some kind of bug spray. It was very strong and we had to leave our patio door open all night, plus the front door for a while to get the cross ventilation. The odor was gone in the morning-- hopefully we had no brain damage from whatever it was they were using. Didn't see any bugs either. The grounds were well groomed and manicured. You always saw workers either working on the landscape or painting, or doing some kind of up keep. The pool was nice, clean and appeared to be unheated. We didn't spend much time in the pool as we were off diving every day. All the employees that we came into contact with were very helpful and friendly, with a few exceptions with a couple of the bartenders. We weren't sure if they were just overworked as they only had one at each bar and were always busy, or they couldn't speak much English. The drinks on the all inclusive plan were very limited as to what you could have and the mixed drinks were lacking much alcohol, which is fine if you are doing a lot of diving, since you don?t want to be doing too much partying while diving. The food was, most of the time, good. If you are looking for gourmet food, you won't find it here. It is better than fast food restaurants. So plan for something in between. There is plenty to choose from in the Buffet restaurant. They always had dishes made with beef, chicken, fish, and pork. Food could have been hotter, but it is a problem trying to keep that much food warm. Beach party and Mexican night buffet were the best. You could always get a hamburger at the beach restaurant or pool restaurant in the afternoon. Guacamole and salsa was always good. We made reservations at their beach side restaurant for dinner (Los Girasoles), but don't bother, it wasn't worth it. The steaks you had to chase around and kill yourself! Well almost. The calamari was too tough to eat. Lime soup was good. The deserts were good. They had some sushi, which we don't eat, but the other couple that we were with said that it was real good. We paid for the Internet while we were there so that we could check our home messages. The encryption on their computer wasn't enough to gain access to our home system or some other websites that we needed to get to, to keep in touch with other people. If you go, set up a hotmail account before you go and have everyone contact you that way. The computer comes up in Spanish, so you need to get that changed over to English. Plus we never did figure out how to do the @ sign as their keyboard is different than ours and has 3 symbols on some of the keys. The taxicabs are not allowed in the airport for pick-ups, just drop offs. You have to use their shuttle service at $7.50 PP and they cram you in like sardines. If we were to do this again, we would suggest going outside the airport area and catching a cab to the hotel, which was $9.00 per couple in a private cab. When we returned to the airport on the way home, we were told from a driver that it would cost $10.00 for 4 persons, but then the hotel desk quoted us $12.00 and then when we went to get in the cab, they told us $14.00. We finally decided to just pay the $12. Through the hotel as nobody confessed to the $10. Fee, even the one we originally asked. They seem to know have fixed minimum prices as you can't dicker down, but they have no problem adding on some extra bucks, as a service fee, I suppose. Going into town is best done later at night when lots of the cruise ship people are either back at the ship or some of the ships have left. Saturday is a good day to go, as hardly any ships in town on that day. One day we had 9 ships in port at once and most of the days there were at least 6 or 7. Way too crowded to see much of the town. Another sad thing is with the arrival of so many cruise ships; all the great prices of Mexico are no longer to be had. They have marked up their prices to match US prices, don't dicker in prices and the clothes are defiantly less quality than you would find in the US and probably even cheaper at home. Lots of big name party spots, like Hard Rock, Senior Frogs and Carlos and Charles Is still going strong. There are a lot of fast food chains there now too. It is very commercial now. The diving is, of course fantastic. We dove with Paradise divers every day and they were great. They kept the amount of people that they put on the boats to 16 max, which we didn't always have that many. They would divide the groups up in twos and would space us out from us and other groups so that we weren't crowded on the reefs. We would and will go back in the future, staying either there again or trying another hotel. We were fine with our stay there and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good clean place to stay. All-inclusive is the way to go. You can eat as much or whenever you like most of the time. The price is good enough that you don't feel like you have to eat there all the time as we went to town twice to eat out, but still felt good about the all-inclusive price. You don't have to worry about carrying money around with you all the time and tips are included at the club. We did tip the dive crew $5. A day PP, but then we felt they were worth it. They take good care of you on and off the boat.
