Enjoyed a laid-back family holiday here over Christmas. This is a smaller resort, which adds to its charm, and makes it less busy than a larger resort. Also, since it is a scuba destination, we found the divers cleared out in the morning so only a few other guests were relaxing at the pool with us. Plenty of chairs, and lots of choice of shady or sunny spots. Pool is very kid-friendly. Hot tubs not always the cleanest but when are hotel hot-tubs ever all that clean? Food was excellent. The fact there was no a-la-carte restaurant made no difference, as the variety and quality at the 2 restaurants (1 off the lobby for breakfast and dinner, 1 at the beach for lunch) and the snack bar (open 11am to 5-ish?) provided us with more than enough choices. In fact, maybe too many because I gained 6 lbs. while there, athough it could also be blamed on the beer and pina coladas. We ate a ton of guacamole and pico de gallo every day.
We had no issues (ie: tummy troubles) at all. We were cautious to only drink bottled water (there are plenty of water coolers all over the resort, which makes it easy to refill a bottle) and we brushed our teeth with bottled water only. Ice cubes in drinks were purified ice cubes, so no worries.
Drinks were great. My 5 year old worked his way through the virgin cocktails drinks list and found a favourite, the Mexican Dolphin (pina colada mix with grenadine.) Drinks were not watered down which was new to me, having been able to down 10 cocktails before lunch at any other resort we've ever visited. Beer was good (Dos Equis.)
The beach had mixed reviews in our family. First of all, we knew what to expect. No surprise. It's a pier, with ladders to swim off and there is a retaining wall with a sandy-beach patio. I had a fantastic time snorkling near the pier (free snorkling equipment rentals at the dive shop at the beach) however my husband never went in the ocean and my son went in, freaked out, and got out.
Town is close enough to walk (10 minute walk) and the grocery store (Cheduai?) is close to the resort for getting the best deals on booze (to take home) and anything else you might want. It's basically like a Mexican Wal-Mart.
We took a ferry to Playa Del Carmen ($11 per person, $6 for kids) and then found a local bus to take us to the ruins at Tulum. The local bus costs 25 pesos per person ($2.50 US), and Tulum is $4.50 for adults, free for kids. If we'd gone on a Tulum Tour (from the hotel or from Playa Del Carmen), it would have been $70 per person. The ruins are worth seeing and wear a swimsuit under your clothes as the beach there is spectacular.
There were a lot of activities at the hotel but most guests just wanted to hang out and chill instead. I enjoyed a rifle shooting contest - yes, seriously, hotel guests with rifles !!! (safely out back of the hotel, under supervision, of course) My son enjoyed whacking the pinata on Xmas eve - the little Mexican girls all dressed up like princesses, going to town on the pinata was absolutely hysterical to see. Activities staff were hilarious and very very helpful and interactive with the guests. A big shout-out to Francesco, who is a hit with all the kids.
Our room was nice and we had a view of the ocean as well. Wireless internet in the lobby was very handy. We went to Hotel Cozumel knowing it wasn't 5 stars and yes there were a few broken things (from the hurricane and/or disrepair) but there were no surprises nor disappointments. We had a wonderful time at Hotel Cozumel and would definately go back.

Excellent vacation. Rooms were clean, adequate. Not a 5 star resort, but the food was OK, drinks were cold, pool was nice. People were very friendly. Great access to Dive Paradise. Nice location, close to town (walking distance).

Great dive hotel. Lots to do. I'll stay here again.

First, in order for you to understand my review, I need to give you a little back story.

I was supposed to get married at this resort back in June 07, needless to say, it didn't happen. Not only didn't it happen, it fell apart literally 4 hours before the flight was to leave JFK. Hell, I went anyways and had a blast.

Maribel, the group coordinator needs a huge "high five" for taking care of me as well as she did. I was in contact with her for nearly a year prior to the "event" and she was willing to deal with every little question and comment and request without getting annoyed or anything. To top it off, when I arrived at the resort, I saught her out immedietly to tell her about the change in plans. She, most generously, refunded me about 85% of my wedding package. Unfortunately, while the hotel is still hosting weddings, they are not the point-of-contact for planning them. They have an outside contractor now.

The customer service at this hotel was amazing.

This hotel is on my list of places to visit again.

Pros:
-The dive pier is right across the street (underground tunnel from the lobby puts you right there).
-There are lockers right at the pier (get key from front desk).
-Restaurant (Las Gracioles) has a nice breakfast buffet.
-Dive Paradise is the on-site dive shop. They get two thumbs up, as always.
-Staff was VERY attentive.
-Hotel is located about 1 mile out of the main square and about a half mile from Punta Langosta (shopping and restaurants-very touristy). Both well within walking distance.
-Hotel appeares to be very well maintined.
-Rooms are generously sized.

Cons:
-Poolside karaoke = very annoying
-Gym was horrible, they need all new equipment and a better place to put it. It's cool to have it poolside and in open air, but it's obviously taking it's toll on the equipment.

Bottom line: I am more than willing to give my money to this place again.

  • Liked — Great staff, huge pool.
  • Disliked — Poolside karaoke and/or cheezy movies.

First, let me start off by saying that the purpose of our stay was a dive vacation and Hotel Cozumel and Dive Paradise did not disappoint.

My husband and I booked our week long stay (Sept. 22-29)through Bay Adventures [--] We chose the All Inclusive package as it was only $100 more per person for the entire week and we knew that between breakfast, lunches and drinks, we'd get our monies worth and we definitely did.

Upon checking in, we received two welcome cocktails. Check-in went smoothly. We got our in-room safe key and towel tickets. If you lose either, you will get charged $50 and $15, respectively.

The hotel consists of three floors: Ground, Floor 1 and Floor 2. We were on Floor 2, room 1231. This was a room with a king size bed, small shower/tub area and small, but decent size balcony that overlooked the pool area. The balcony had areas that we could hang our wetsuits on and had two plastic chairs and a plastic table. The room was neat and tidy and included daily maid service.

Breakfast and lunches were buffet style with breakfasts consisting of typical American fare such as sausage, hashbrown patties (the ones like McDonald's has), pancakes and fresh fruit. There is one cook who will make eggs to order but she only makes one egg dish at a time so the line can get a bit long. Keep that in mind if you have a morning dive. (We were there during low season and I couldn't imagine what it'd be like during high season!) They played American oldies during breakfast every day we were there.

Lunches were also American fare but sometimes, you could get the cook to make some beef tacos or chicken quesadillas for you. Again, you need to wait in line for this along with burgers if you choose to have that instead.

We did not eat any dinners there. We went out for dinner every night. The taxi ride to downtown (main cruise ship area) was $3 one way for two people. It was worth it to do dinner out and to experience local cuisine that is very affordable. We walked back to the hotel one time, but it simply was too long of a walk in flip-flops.

As far as the drinks go, we pretty much stuck with beer. The margaritas were too sweet for our liking. The beer was Dos Equis on tap and was always refreshing!

The pool area was always clean and the pool is huge. The pool, at it's deepest, is four feet and we didn't see any chipping tiles like others had posted. The hot tub is a good size however, it was not hot so we didn't use it. The music can be a little loud for some folks. They play a mix of Latino, Rap, Dance and Reggae.

Across the street is the beach and Dive Paradise. We took the underground tunnel everyday to DP but we didn't utilize the beach at all. It's a small beach with lounge chairs but that's about it. There are ladders off of the pier and a roped off swim area but we didn't use these either. There also is a bar area but we only noticed it open around noon.

Since we are divers, the hotel met our needs since we were gone diving most of the time anyway. Even though the food was okay, we'll be back. If you keep in mind that this resort is a mid-priced resort, I believe it may meet your expectations.

What can I say? You get what you pay for? Thought I would do an update from my last Mexico trip as I am headed to Puerto Vallarta in a few days.

I stayed at the Hotel Cozumel with my buddy a few months ago. I would say it was okay/good. The good; pool is huge!, staff is pretty nice, A/C is cold enough to freeze you out! (yes!), across the street is the SCUBA center and you can jump off the pier and go snorkeling straight from there. Breakast and lunch are pretty good. TV/cable was nice.

The not so good; drinks are very watered down, indoor bar gets smoky, dinners are not well done - they try to get fancy and fail. Thank God for fresh fish. Sometimes desserts and fruit at dinner was from previous days. The place is very loud on weekends - hallways are all tile and concrete and doors slam on their own. Thus very hard to get to bed b/f 2am on Friday and Sat. nights. Internet was a bit sporadic and if you want to use their own PCs, you must pay. Coffee is horrid, so bring your own or get Mexican hot chocolate for breakfast, mmmm....

I did find that the location was pretty good. Boats come to the dock to pick up the divers all day long, so if you SCUBA great! If you snorkel, stay out of the boat's way! We were about 1/2 mile S. of San Miguel, so I could walk to the big Walmart store (Chedrui?), which had an awesome bakery and great prices. I supplemented some meals with food from Chedrui, plus power bars I had from the US and went out a few times, so the mediocre dinners were suvivable.

  • Liked — Pool, A/C, location, breakfast
  • Disliked — Noise on weekends, dinners
