First off, I’m a travel agent and have been to tons of All-Inclusive resorts, and have been to the El Cozumeleno about six or seven times. It’s been about 4 years since I’ve stayed there but have plenty of repeat clients that tell me that the resort is still a very nice hotel.
We went on May 31st for 3 nights. Check in was a breeze as expected, even though our room was not ready. I didn’t expect that as it was 9:30 am when we arrived. They did put on our bracelets and were free to start enjoying the resort.
We stayed in room 201, which is in the North tower. The room was great and AC worked so good that we needed to turn it down. The room had two double beds, plus two twin sleepers and a nice large table. I was traveling with a buddy of mine so it worked out great.
The room was a perfect location to all of the activities and even though it was near the disco, you never heard any music from there.
The food at the El Cozumeleno has never been anything to write home about, but the breakfast was always a hit with fresh omelets as you wanted them. Service staff was very helpful and attentive. Lunch and diner at the buffet was very bland and not very good, however, the fajitas were pretty good. For lunch, just enjoy some chips and salsa.
The indoor restaurant was great and they’d added a new deal for the guest. I forgot to tell my buddy to bring long pants, so I thought we wouldn’t get a chance to enjoy the indoor restaurant. On Thursday night about 9:30, I notice people going in with shorts. When I asked about it, I was told that after 9:30, you do NOT need to have long pants on.
The next morning, I made reservations for us to eat at 9:30. No problems with getting a time and there wasn’t a long line to sing up.
The food was great there and I ordered Surf and Turf. My steak was fantastic!
The lobby bar was very nice and they even have nicer brand of alcohol down below so you’ll need to ask for it. Be sure to tip the waiters a little even thought it’s not required. They were all very nice and happy to fix anything you wanted.
Activities were plenty and the swim up bar was a hit for a group of us. We also had a great time playing volleyball in the pool.
Snorkeling was pretty good right out in front of the hotel, but if you walk south a ways before getting in, you’ll see tons of fish. Here is another tip. Take a roll from the breakfast buffet and put in a baggy. While you snorkel, open it up and let out some of the bread. You’ll have fish all over you.
The manager of the dive shop is pretty arrogant and not much of a people person, but I was able to overlook his attitude to have a good time. My buddy booked five dives and was happy with everything except of the manager’s attitude.
I rented a moped for 35.00 for 24 hours and cruised around the island. There were four of us that did that and we had a great time stopping off at several bars around the island for a beer.
All in all, I give the El Cozumeleno two thumbs up and can’t wait to go back.
I saw several employees that I remembered from years ago there and some told me that they’d been with the hotel as long as 30 years. The owners must take good care of them and they enjoy their jobs enough to stay. Maybe that’s why they’re so friendly to guest.
Hotel is only a 5 dollar taxi ride to town.
