Our 2nd trip back to El Coz was again an AWESOME vacation!
Two adults, two children ages 11 and 8. We go mainly for the snorkelling, which is excellent here. See snorkel comments farther on.
We chose the North Tower this time just to compare the difference from staying in the South Tower last year. Both are incredibly clean and nice. The North Tower has much more space, plus in our room (408) with two beds, we had a couch, coffee table and two cushioned stools. More than enough room for all our gear! The air conditioner worked perfect with 3 fan settings and temperature controls. Our bathroom was huge and had plenty of hot shower water and great pressure. Yes, it's older than the South Tower, but we were very pleased with the extra space and quieter atmosphere. The views from our huge balcony were incredible! After staying in both towers, we'd go with the North side for the space.
Service: A+++ From the minute you arrive, you are greeted with constant smiles and offers for help. The Bell Hop men bend over backwards to accomodate your needs and haul or keep your luggage safe. Front desk people were great to us and granted our choice of tower and floor choice. We did have to wait a few hours for our room, but we arrived in the morning and check in is 3pm. We got our room at 2pm and it was immaculate. Well worth the wait. The lobby bathroom is beautiful and came in handy to change into our suits while waiting for our room.
Housekeeping: A+++ Request for extra bottled water was delivered promptly and our maid gave us 5 bottles daily plus extra towels when we left her a note and small tip. She was wonderful the whole stay and twice left us cute towel figures my daughter was quite impressed with!
Food: Even better this year. I thought the food was extremely good this time. There was so much to choose from including dining locations. The breakfast buffet with made-to-order omelettes was our favorite. Our kids enjoyed the made-to-order smoothies each morning. The lunch buffet was excellent as well and the fresh grilled fajitas were worth getting dried off for. No wet suits in the lunch buffet area, but throw on some sandals and a wrap and head in for great choices. The food can be brought out to your poolside lounge on plastic plates if you wish. The pool side snack bar was great as well. Out of this world quacamole and fresh Pico de Gallo. Fresh fruits, pasta, cold cuts, cheese, kid/American foods - burgers, hot dogs, french fries, pizza, grilled chicken, you name it. Something for everyone. Chips, melted cheese, popcorn . . .
Dinners were great too. Mon/Wed/Friday were theme nights with buffet-stlyle meals and entertainment. The Mexican night is our favorite. Other nights in the buffet ocean side were great too with fresh grilled choices as well. We enjoyed the 3-man Mariachi Serenades. The reservation restaurant is nice - we only ate there one night, as we're not the "head in and get showered by a certain time" kind of family. They do have later reservation times, but once was fine for us. We recommend the Mahi Mahi. I went down at 7:55am and there was NO line for reservations. We also ordered room service for dinner one night and the spaghetti my daughter ordered was great!
Drinks: Plenty of choices and very tasty. The self-serve fountain drink and icecream was again a hit with our kids. Try a Coke-float! Cervesa with lime is always cold and hits the spot. The Pina Coladas are wonderful, as the Strawberry Margharitas. Our kids enjoyed the alcohol-free Pina Coladas daily. As for liquor strength - we were fine with what they served and never asked for double shots. You could definitely feel the alcohol after a few, so what's the hurry? We recommend tipping and bringing some ones with you to the pool area. As soon as you tip one waiter, they'll look out for you all day. They deserve it for how hard they are working to please everyone. We had fresh drinks brought without even asking and before we had completely finished our first!
Pools/Activities: The pools were much warmer this year. Our kids didn't swim much last year, as our weather was cooler and windy. This time we had scorching hot sunny days and they really enjoyed the South side pool. It meanders all over - under a bridge, waterfalls, swim-up bar. Shallow and deeper areas that are all connected. Super fun! The north side's pool is smaller, but also very nice and a quiet place to lounge with your book. The south side jacuzzi was hot this time. Cold last year, I believe due to being broken from the hurricane. It wasn't hot enough for some folks, but we loved it, especially after snorkelling. Our kids loved the mini-golf, life-size chess, pool basketball, and also the tennis court in the front of the resort. The Activity staff works hard to entertain everyone of all ages. They'll make you laugh! We were told the golf course across the street is incredible.
Towels/Chairs: As everyone notes, get out early to reserve your favorite spot. Otherwise, there are always lounge chairs available all day that aren't right next to the pool's edge. Plenty of seating for all. Palapas on the north side beach get snatched earliest - get out and stick your sandals on them by 6:30am if you really want to hang there all day. Towels are great and huge. Just keep track of them and your towel cards and you won't be charged anything. Turn them in for a dry one at any time.
We highly recommend the Manta outings. We did both the snorkel trip and the family sunset cruise. Both were a blast. The captain and crew are the best and work their tails off to make sure everyone is safe and having a great time. Well worth the price. Snacks and drinks provided as well. Sign up with our favorite Cozumel man, Antonio, in the Ocean Tours dive shop right on the El Coz beach. He's the best!!!
Snorkelling at the resort: Awesome! Many cool fish - even barracuda! They won't harm you - they keep their distance. We saw too many incredible creatures to mention. We bring our own snorkel gear and go out every day. The dive shop recommends staying within the roped area, for smart saftey reasons, and this is a huge area to snorkel in. We have been snorkelling for years, and felt safe walking with our gear south to a beautiful small lagoon and starting our snorkelling there. It's just before the small orange resort, (not the Melia!) There's a nice sandy area for putting on your flippers and entering calmly. The current flows north and will eventually carry you back to the El Coz. My husband goes out snorkelling at night as well with an underwater dive light. He saw 3 octopus! We also drove down to Dzul Ha one day, and Chankanaab another. Both excellent places to snorkel and hang out. Enormous Iguanas roam around Chankanaab - they are really fun to watch. Last year we snorkelled Playa Palancar and that place was great too. We also recommend the "Tucan" sail/snorkel trip from last year. A bit spendy, but really a first-class time with Captain Dan including grilled lunch and spinaker rides. Antonio may be able to hook you up with this outing as well.
You can't go wrong with the El Cozumeleno. We met wonderful people there that have been back 5 or more times. We will be going back - not soon enough for me!!
