My wife and I stayed at the El Cozumeleno Beach Resort from August 20, 2006 to August 25, 2006. I was a little hesitant to stay at this hotel after reading some of the other reviews here, but I was pleasantly surprised with our experiences.
Our check-in experience was fast and easy. It took about 20 minutes, and that was only because there were two other families in front of us. All of the staff was friendly to us, from the porters right up to the front desk. One important note: be sure you don’t lose your room key or your beach towel. Replacing a room key will cost you $100, replacing a beach towel will set you back $50 per towel.
Another important note: there is no ATM machine on the resort. If you need cash, you’ll have to walk over to the Melia Cozumel next door. Don’t worry; the round trip only takes a few minutes.
Our room was nicely laid out and clean. Yes, we smelled the musty smell that so many other reviewers have reported. However, I stopped noticing the smell by the time I went to sleep the first night. My wife continued to smell it throughout our stay, but even she wasn’t overly upset about it. The only other complaint we had about the room was the water pressure, which we felt was too weak. Neither one of us felt that the bed’s mattress was too hard, though we did find certain pillows to be on the hard side. One other note: the curtains in the room are NOT opaque. You’ll be woken up by the light every morning.
The service at the pool bar could be a little slow, since there was only one bartender there. However, the bar for El Cocal is also right next to the pool so you have other options. Also, the pool waiter was reasonably quick in getting us drinks. We felt that the best bar service came from the bar right next to the La Veranda restaurant. Neither one of us had any complaints about the quality of the drinks from any of the bars. Two drinks we would highly recommend are the Pina Colada and a drink named “Miami Vice”.
La Cocal was good to very good. The breakfasts varied. The sausage and bacon at the buffet were good every day, while the scrambled eggs were good some days and not so good other days. If you like eggs, your best bet is usually the grill man. The French toast also varied. Lunches were good every day. The tortillas at the grill are worth the wait. Almost any of the Mexican or Tex-Mex dishes were very good. The roasted chicken is also very good. I liked the lasagna, but my wife wasn’t so keen on it.
We did see birds flying around constantly, but we never saw them going into the food. Honestly, I don’t think there’s much they can do to keep the birds out. They would either have to enclose the buffet area, which would take away much of its ambiance, or they would need to hire some hunters to shoot them down all day. Remember, this is a tropical island near a wildlife refuge. Birds are part of the picture, like it or not.
La Veranda is very good, but the menu is limited. You will need to pay extra for anything on the wine list, so be ready. We recommend the surf and turf dish. My wife also enjoyed the Shrimp Cappuccino soup.
Food at the snack bar was pretty good. I would stay away from the hot dogs. The hamburgers and the tacos are better choices. There’s also a machine for soft serve ice cream that was very good.
The pool is awesome. You have a secluded area with a waterfall next to the activities building. There is also: an area for water volleyball, an area for lounging around the pool bar, and a shallow area for the young kids. My only complaint about the pool was that it needs to be skimmed much more frequently. There were a lot of bugs and debris in the pool at all hours of the day.
The activities are what set this resort apart from the rest, especially the water activities. I highly recommend that you take advantage of the “Intro to Scuba” class that is part of your all-inclusive package. This was my first time scuba diving, and I loved it! Pepe and Edwin are great instructors and great people. My wife became a little panicked during the beach dive, but they took great care of her and made sure she was able to enjoy herself. Antonio is as good as advertised by the other reviewers. There is also good snorkeling right on the hotel beach. The only activity I would NOT recommend is the sunset cruise. It offered a good fire show, but otherwise it was so-so. There is a “pirate ship” cruise (not offered by this resort) which looked like a lot more fun.
We don’t have any children, but we did notice that the kids at the resort really seemed to enjoy themselves. We saw several only-children who were able to pair up with other kids and play. There is a kid’s lounge, but I rarely saw any kids in it. They were having too much fun everywhere else!
Overall, El Cozumeleno was a good value for the price we paid. I’ve stayed at other, more expensive resorts but didn’t have nearly as good a time as I did here.
