My wife, child, and 17 other friends stayed at El Coz from July 8th to the 16th; the day before Emily hit the island head on.
We reserved a deluxe suite, which offered an incredibly beautiful ocean view and a small refrigerator. The staff who cleaned our room were very efficient and discrete. My only complaint about the accommodations would be the beds, which are hard as I’ve ever felt. Be sure to bring along your back medication if you’re prone to backaches. Overall, we found the facilities to be very beautiful and well worth the extra cost.
We ate most of our meals in the El Cocal Restaurant, an open area which offered buffet dining. With 20 people, it was difficult to always sit together for breakfast and dinner, but we managed to move enough tables around to do so. The waiters, though not thrilled to have so many people at sitting together, were helpful and efficient. The highlight of the restaurant is the breakfast, where chefs hand make omelets and pancakes to your liking. Although the rest of the food was not very interesting (i.e burgers, hot dogs, fruits, etc) it was tasty and adequate for our needs. Be sure to bring bug spray. The biting flies are brutal!
We also celebrated a birthday at La Veranda. Although difficult to acquire reservations, it’s worth the effort. The food is delicious and the waiters are extremely attentive. We also ventured downtown for dinner, where I had the best Prime rib I’ve ever had at PePe’s Grill.
Overall, the entire hotel staff was courteous and efficient. One note though, make sure you keep track of your towels and don’t have anyone under 13 request items from the kiosk. The people responsible for handing out towels and miniature golf clubs were unnecessarily rude and condescending to my 9 year old.
On Saturday, July 16th, guests were not allowed to participate in any of the activities. Even the miniature golf course was restricted. Hotel staff were busy preparing the grounds for Hurricane Emily and didn’t have time to be responsible for guests’ safety should an activity go wrong. The staff’s professionalism was evident, given that they were working to ensure our safety, while at the same time worrying about their families and homes. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.
