My overview of El Cozumeleno Resort
Good
• Two pools, one geared more for families, teens and children, with music playing all day & a swim-up bar. The other pool is smaller but on the quiet side of the resort.
• They have pool/beach towels available down by the pool. They are huge & very nice!
• Most all rooms have balconies and ocean view. We were on the 8th floor (9th floor is top) and had a great view.
• Property is very clean, well-kept, the staff is friendly and most all speak English.
• Almost all guests are American.
• Room is nice with all tile floor and A/C that worked very well. Bathroom was large. Color-coordinated linens match the accent tiles.
• A buffet is served for all meals. It has a wide variety of items, and like most buffets, some items are served well and some are not.
• The buffet restaurant is open air and nice & breezy! Try to get a table by the open windows looking out to the beach & ocean.
• Be on the lookout for the cat (Toonces) at night. You can feed her chicken or fish. There is also a black dog that will sit on the beach begging for food.
• The guacamole is excellent, BUT you really need to mix in pico de gallo, salt & lime. Also, the wait staff can’t seem to find chips (tortas) when they run out.
• Lobby has a bar, snack area/buffet has a bar, and smaller pool has a bar.
• Beer is XX only on draft. They have non-premium liquor for mixed drinks, margaritas, etc.
• The sangria is good, but make sure you ask for a separate glass with ice, gin, triple sec & brandy. Then mix the two together for a good glass and ½ of sangria.
• They have many different tropical drinks, and some are very good. However, they measure one shot for every drink unless you are standing there telling them to pour more liquor. They will do it, but you must ask.
• Must make reservation at La Veranda (the “nice” restaurant) in the AM for that evening. Men must wear long pants and formal sandals or closed toe shoes (no beach flip-flops).
• La Veranda is very nice, the A/C works well, and the piano player is good. The restaurant is quite loud, though.
• The menu at La Veranda changes every couple of days. It is not the broadest menu ever, but they do have plenty of basic choices (fish, beef, chicken, pasta, several salads) and several dessert choices.
• Wine at La Veranda is extra, and quite expensive ($30+ per bottle for very average wines).
• Rooms have 30 cable TV channels, with 4-5 in english.
• Snorkel gear available for an hour at a time (this allows all guests to access equipment). Lots of fish to be seen just off pier off beach. Very Convenient. Ask restaurant staff for day-old bread to feed the fish.
• Free bottled water in your room. Just ask maid for extra bottles if you need it.
• Bring an insulated mug if you want to keep your beer/drink cold. They serve the drinks in plastic reusable cups that are about 12 ounces.
Bad
• Beware the timeshare people across from the front desk. They will offer you a free day rental in a jeep, but not tell you about the required 90 minute sales pitch.
• Almost everyone here is American.
• Either pack or buy sunscreen elsewhere. They charge $20 for a medium sized bottle of spray-on lotion.
• Don’t plan on going to dinner at La Veranda before your reservation time. We tried to eat at 7:30 with an 8:30 reservation, and they said no way. There were empty tables too.
• The pool & beach chairs seem to get taken early in the morning; I went down at 5:45 AM and the prime chairs on the beach were gone! (I think these folks “claim” their chairs the night before.) Also, many people tend to save their chairs and never return. If you want beach seating with shade, make sure you get there first thing in the AM.
