There have been so many reviews of this property that I am not sure I can add anything new or different. Overall the main point I want to get across is that we really enjoyed our stay at the El Coz. The "we" is myself, my wife and our two children (ages 6 and 3).
This is a very nice all-inclusive resort in a pretty good location. If you are after a relaxing place to stay where they take very good care of you - then I would recommend the El Coz. I think what really stands out at this resort is the service - the bellmen, the front desk staff, the bartenders, the wait staff, the staff around the pools - almost all were very courteous, very friendly, very helpful and very similar in their approach: good customer service with a smile. This made a big impact and made for a very nice stay. This is also a very well maintained property - kept in good condition and kept very clean. We also appreciated that. And, this is a lower paced resort that is family friendly. Between the pools, the beach and the resort activities there were plenty of fun things to do to keep our two kids not only occupied - but also to get them really engaged into our stay at the El Coz. What also stood out to me were the number of people I met that are return customers to the El Coz. I think that speaks volumes. One gentleman I met has stayed with his family at the El Coz each year for the past 14 years!
So much has already been said in previous reviews about the food and drinks. Based on my personal tastes and expectations going into our stay, and then what we actually experienced, I give the food and drinks at the El Coz an overall rating of 6.5 out of 10. Good for the most part with moments of really good - maybe one or two greats. The highlights: made to order omelets (shrimp, shrooms, cheese, salsa) and juice bar (the #7 with fresh pineapple, guava, papaya, coconut and orange juice) each morning at breakfast, the fresh fish filet off the menu at lunch each day (its the same fish each day but was pretty tasty with salsa and was a good alternative to the buffet), being served a good sit down dinner at La Veranda. And really, let's be honest here - how just absolutely awesome is it to sit down at 8:30 a.m. on a Monday morning, drinking your custom made smoothy, feeling the ocean breeze blowing on your face, watching your children be dazzled by the beautiful view of your ocean side table. That is the reason you go on vacation - and that is where the El Coz really delivers. I thought the drinks were pretty decent - seemed to be a little better from the bar in the lobby. On the first day I was standing at the bar when someone ordered a Miami Vice - I was hooked for the rest of the trip. There were some lowlights: the bees in the buffet restaurant (my three year old would like to make sure I add that), the volume of the poolside music at times, the lack of shade around the pools and beach (Mexico certainly delivered on lots of hot, hot sun!).
I would be remiss too if I did not mention and give a plug for the car rental agency we used in town: ISIS Rentadora. We rented a jeep from ISIS for one day and did the trip around the island. They picked me up at the El Coz and were great to work with (also had the most competitive price for a jeep rental). Margarita at ISIS is very nice and her staff did a great job. Make sure to get out and at least see the town if you are able. The other side of the island is very rustic and very beautiful.
Overall the El Coz delivered what we were anticipating - delivered on what we were after: A lower key, beautiful, family-friendly resort that delivered great service with a smile.
