Just returned from 8 nights at El Cozumeleno (Jan. 26 - Feb.3) I believe this hotel was listed as a 3 star and I would say that is about right. If you go expecting a 4 or 5 star you will be disappointed. But if you read the reviews you should have a pretty good idea what to expect and you can have a wonderful trip.
Food : Good to very good. Breakfast seems to please everyone because there are all the American favorites. Our two kids carb-loaded every morning! Ask the wait staff for the day-old bread and they will bring you a bag full of it to feed the fish, which is a must-do for all ages whether you are on the pier or in the water. Lunch was very good, too. I found out on our last day you can order from the kitchen from the menus on the table, duh! But if you knew what to look for you could have a very tasty lunch. The fajitas/tacos made at the grill are very tasty. I enjoyed putting the fajita meat over a plate of warm tortilla chips and the guacamole was very good. It was pretty quiet at the beginning of our stay, so waiting in line wasn't a problem. Kids did fine with the snack bar options, although breakfast was their fave. Ate at the a la carte 3 times. First time was very good, surf and turf was excellent. Wait staff was very attentive. Second time was good, also. Third time was tasty but terrible service. We booked a 5:30 reservation so we could head into town early and we didn't get out until 7:30 (and we hadn't even been offered coffee and desert yet). Had trouble getting refills of drinks on the third visit but not at the first two. So I guess it's the luck of the draw. We only ate at the dinner buffet once. Not bad but not great. One of the things that swayed us to Cozumel and this resort was the fact that you can leave your resort and explore AND it was such a great deal we could afford to do so, but if that isn't an option for you I'm sure you can make do. The most positive thing I can say is that it seemed like food was ALWAYS available. I've often found myself at other AI's in the middle of serving times when not much was available. Here it seemed like one meal ran right into the next. Great when everyone seems to be on a different schedule.
Outside Restaurants: Another reviewer mentioned La Mission Restaurant. We set out one evening to go there but the cab driver suggested Casa Mission, which is the original Mission restaurant on the island and is at the owners home. Absolutely fantastic. Beautiful grounds. Excellent Service. Best Margarita I had on the island. The Queso Fundido is to die for! And try the Sexy Coffee at the end. Panchos Backyard (right along the main drive unlike Casa Mission which is tucked into the town) was also very good. Even if you are not eating out it is worth checking out the town. Walk into the town, not just the main strip and you get away from some of the touristy spots. We always felt very safe.
Pool: The Pools were fine, although we didn't use them much. The kids did enjoy them. Yes, they were cold, but the sun doesn't even reach them until mid to late morning so I'm sure this is why. January is a bit cooler and the sun a bit lower with less daylight. It was by no means arctic. Very swimmable. South was busy, North quieter.
Hotel Beach: I found the beach to be wonderful. If you are going to Cozumel looking for miles of sandy, white, soft beach then change your reservation to Riviera Maya or Punta Cana. Cozumel IS a reef. We are not divers but we all enjoyed the snorkeling . A storm brought in quite a bit of seaweed the first couple of days which they cleaned up and removed in wheelbarrows. By midweek there was practically no seaweed and the water was beautiful. Yes, most of the beach front is rocky but there is definitely an area in front of the north tower where you can walk right in on sand. These rocks make the snorkeling fantastic. Great sunsets, too! If you want a palapa, build one when you get there. There are only a few and I swear these people are out there by 5 am. Definitely all taken by 7 am, and no trees on the beach for shade. So plan accordingly.
Other Beaches: It's definitely worth a walk north and south of El Coz. Yes, there is trashed washed up, etc. but I am all for exploring. Wear beach shoes, though, especially for walking south. There are some cute little swimming holes heading south. I would STRONGLY recommend trying some of the other beaches out. We rented a VW bug for 2 days. (FYI, bring ISIS' phone/address with you, no one seemed to know who or where they are). My favorite beach was at Playa Planacar. It is a long, pothole filled dirt road that leads to the beach. Restaurant was great. There are free beach chairs, hammocks, rest rooms, great snorkeling, no dangerous currents and if you walk south you will come across a deserted pier and beach littered with giant conch shells and great sandy, shallow swimming. We are not into the 'beach party' atmosphere of some other beach clubs and this was like our own private island.
Alberto's Beach Bar is just a little north of Playa Planacar BB. Also a very nice beach and the restaurant was great and comes highly recommended. Along the east coast we stopped at Chen Rio. The eastern shore is very rough and very rustic. Chen Rio has a nice swimming cove. We also stopped at the Natural Bridge formation and had the yummiest coconut water right out of a fresh coconut at Punta Chiqueros (I think if was there, anyway, can't miss the picture of the coconut with the straw coming out of it).
Services/Amenities: Overall the hotel was clean and the beach service for beverages was a plus. The mini-golf won't win awards but it was a nice distraction. The Kids club seemed very nice. My children are 7 and 10. The 7 year old loved it because they have 2 X-Boxes! It was hard to get him out of there after that. Often times it was unsupervised and I didn't notice any planned activities except for mini-golf once. I've read that it is always bustling and not the place for a quiet vacation. Our experience is that this is true at the South Pool, where the music and games are played. In front of the North Tower we found ourselves a very peaceful vacation. So you can find what you are looking for, just look. Maid service was fine. We sent out an e-mail the week prior with requests and they were not met. In their defense, our original reqest through the travel company was North Tower and two full beds. That is exactly what we got. My e-mail requested a higher floor with a King and, most importantly, a separate sink, dressing area. That we did not get.
Rooms: So we were in the North Tower on the 2nd floor. At first I was disappointed with the 2nd floor but I have to say the view was just fine. We were in front of the mini-golf, which was entertaining to watch, but usually pretty quiet. Also, the elevator holds about 11/2 people so even though I could have used the exercise, going up 4 flights would have gotten old, especially for the kids. The room was very large. Kids slept on the day-bed/couches and loved it. Air conditioning worked VERY well. Usually a little too cold, but I personally prefer that. It was a little loud but that wasn't a problem and that may be why we have no complaints about outside noise. Never heard another person outside our room at night. Beds were fine. Got plenty of towels when we asked. Complaints would include no available electrical outlets outside of the ONE in the bathroom. Very difficult in this day and age to charge all the kids equipment (Nintendos, tv's, camera, I-pod, etc. But the BIGGEST COMPLAINT would be the sewer smell in the bathroom. It wasn't constant but this odor of a backed up sewer would come from the drains and it was completely nauseating and this would absolutely keep me from staying there again. It was NOT an air conditioning problem, it was sewer, and the toilet would occasionally begin to back up and it was NOT filled with anything we deposited, if you catch my drift. Nasty. Interestingly enough I never read anything about this prior to our trip, and I read ALOT. I've noticed other mentions this week, though. Not sure that it's a continuing problem based on this and it seems like it's only the North Tower that is affected. This was abolutely the worst part about the trip!
In summary, I think it was a great value and great family vacation. You MUST rent a car for at least a day to see the shoreline of the entire island (well, nearly entire). You will be doing yourself a disservice if you do not see Cozumel in it's entirety. It would also be a shame if you didn't experience any of the local less touristy restaurants. I would recommend the hotel BUT based on my experience I would pick the South Tower - since I've not heard any sewer stories there. Send your room requests in early to the reservations manager and remember, as small tip there will get you much better service. Plus, most of these people work very long, hard days for very little money.
