We just returned from five days at the El Coz. Our group consisted of nine adults and two toddlers. My Sister's family, which was a group of twelve, joined us there as well.

Overall, I feel it is a very, very nice resort for a family vacation. Lots of kids and teens there, which was a good fit for us. The whole place was kept spotlessly clean. Our rooms were large, those of us in the newer section had very nice bathrooms, but the rooms in the older section, althoug spacious, are in need of updated bathrooms. The towels and bedding were "skimpy" , but adequate. The pool areas are very nice, but the pools were pretty cold -- and the hot tubs had something nasty going on -- our suits smelled so horribly after using the hot tub near the mini-golf that it took several soakings in sudsy water to remove the odor. Swimming in the sea was poor due to a rocky
shoreline, but it was good snorkeling for our mostly novice group. The
kids activity room was great, as were the people at the dive shop.
Lots and lots of activities were available, pretty hard to get bored there.

Food was good. In partiacular the breakfast omelets and chiquiles, and the later day fajitas. Our big group all managed to find things they liked at each meal. Choices became quite repitious though, so we did eat downtown one night, and at the reservation only restaurant at the resort one night. It was too difficult to do that any oftener due to the size of our group.

With the exception of a few "crabby" ones at the front desk and in the dining room, most of the staff were accomodating and helpful. Not sure i would go to Cozumel again, but if i did i would surely stay at the El Coz -- and definitely recommend it as a good place for a family
vacation.

  • Liked — cleanliness, beautifully kept up grounds, compactness
  • Disliked — cold pools, old bathrooms in North tower guest rooms

Everything was perfect, the food was very good, the rooms were clean and roomy and quiet. The service was out of this world, very friendly, pleasant and prompt. I would recommend this resort to anyone and would go back in a heartbeat.

My husband, kids 10 and 12, and I stayed at El Coz for the 4th time and everything is still as great as it was the first time. This was our first time in the south tower since the north was closed for repair of the balcony railings. We prefer the north tower rooms because they are much larger but the south tower rooms were just fine. I would recommend asking for a room away from the elevator if you are an early-to-bed person.

We had the best weather ever. Rain only one night while we were sleeping and hardly any humidity. The pool was a little cold the first couple days but then was fine. Snorkeling in front of the hotel was great as usual but this year I found and octopus that I would go out every day to check on. He was there for at least 4 days and still there when we left. I would be curious to know if anyone arriving after us got to see it.

The food was as I remember it. We never went hungry. The reservation-only restaurant seemed to be better than the last couple years. The menu changed every 3 days and there were specials of the day. We are waiting for them to bring back the baked Alaska from our first visit.

The theme nights that they grilled outside had delicious steaks and ribs. We enjoyed watching the shows from our patio so that we would not feel compelled to get up on stage!! There is not much to do in the evenings for the kids but we were usually so pooped from a full day of sun and fun that we fell asleep watching DVDs on our portable DVD player that we brought along for this purpose.

The waiters around the pool Aldo and Oscar are awesome. They remembered what drinks we liked and how we liked them and would even bring us cups of popcorn or plates of nachos!

Frederico is our favorite bell hop and he gave us a hug when we arrived. It certainly makes you feel like you are family! All the people who work here are so friendly and helpful.

While we love this hotel very much I recommend that you also get out and experience the whole island. Rent a car from ISIS for $35 a day - VW convertable bug manual transmission with full insurance and grab your map from Map Chick and head off for your personal tour around the island. It is totally safe - the main reason we bring the kids and keep coming back. Our favorite places to visit are Paradise Beach with a $9 charge for a bracelet for the kids which allows them to use the water trampoline, climb the iceberg and slide into the water, kayaks, space walk, climb a palm tree, or float on a mat. Punta Sir Lighthouse is a must see. For a $10 enterance fee (might have been cheaper for kids but I can't be sure) you drive yourself down a long bumpy road to the lighthouse where you can climb to the top and see all around for miles. Tour the museum and learn about the lighthouse and the island. Then board their bus which takes you to the beach area, stopping along the way to view the crocs. The beach area is very large with lots of hammocks and chairs and snorkeling is supposed to be excellent here though I have yet to be able to go out because mother nature was not cooperating. You can also take a pontoon boat ride which is directly across from the beach enterance. This takes you around the lagoon and the guide tells you all about the area. On your way out don't forget to stop at the crocodile viewing area. We saw two large ones sunning themselves. Chen Rios is a nice place to stop for a protected dip and then on to Coconuts for the best margarita and to check out the pets.

The Tucan Sailing trip is another must do if you have the time. The crew is wonderful and you get to do a little bit of everything or nothing at all for a very relaxing day on the water.

Don't forget to check out the trip advisor cozumel forum for any questions that you might have. It is a wonderful place to learn more about where you want to go. Even after going four times to El Coz and 2 other times to other hotels, we are still learning new things.

  • Liked — Everything :o) the people, snorkeling, cleanliness
  • Disliked — Nothing except that the north tower was closed when we were there and it is our favorite!

Just loved it.
We had a great time, me, my daughter and Husband.
Some Americans are very loud, specially at night...but we still could sleep well in our rooms.
The rooms are nice, very clean, buildings very well kept.
Staff is very polite and helpful.
Beach is clean, lots of fish to see. Good to snorkel from the pier or you will have to go to the water using water shoes (remember, cozumel is almost a huge piece of coral...just coral reefs around..a lot of sand beaches are artificial).
The food is good, we had no problems with it.
We plan to go back to Mexico in the future, may be Tulum.
About the city of San Miguel....it is expensive, the sales persons are agressive and they are always waiting for the cruise ships. Things are very expensive on the city. Don't waste money checking the ruins..save for a trip to Playa Del Carmem. The snorkeling tour in the Catamaran Manta was great.
Swim with the dolphins in the Chankanab Park is the best! Great program to do with kids.

We stayed at this hotel from 12/6 to 12/11. The first few days we were there, the water was flat as a board and snorkeling right off the beach was nice. Lots of fish near the break to the right.

Pros: Nice hotel, clean, got awesome sunset pictures off the beach, good food (even better food at the indoor restaurant), away from town and cruise ship crowd. Eduardo, the bartender speaks good English and took up calling our tequila sunrise, (after my husband made a joke about it), a tequila sunset since it was in the evening. Santiago, the waiter in the restaurant, was also very attentive and cheerful. Free access to internet was definitely a perk, because I didn't have to lug my laptop on the plane. The pool area gets sun nearly all day, so sun access was good. Don't go for the chairs near the stairs - you'll get spray from the showers.

Cons: The front desk gave me plenty of 20s (pesos) for tipping on our first day, but afterwards never got in less than a 50 making it difficult to tip staff. The pool was cold and was rarely used by guests. The black birds in the outdoor restaurant - watch out above! One of them pooped on my arm the very first day we were there. Absolutely disgusting! Do not leave your food unwatched, close the buffet trays, otherwise they'll be in it. The front desk will not allow internet access until 8a.m.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay, but of Cozumel and Cancun, I personally liked our hotel in Cancun better due to the warmer pool and walking distance to everything.

  • Liked — the sunsets, the sun hit the pool area most of the day
  • Disliked — front desk after check in
