This is really an excellent resort. As a seasoned traveller of both all inclusive and a la cart travelling, This was definately one of the best values ever. I booked my 2 week stay at El coz on the internet for $1100 plus taxes, all in. Naturally, my excellent rating for the resort is (somewhat) qualified by this great price.

Resort and rooms
This resort is located about 10 minutes NORTH of town. This is about 5 bucks by cab (the only transportation in Coz). Being NORTH of town means little for non diving vacationers but creates some inconvenience for divers. More on this later.

The resort itself appears to be pretty much new and, while it has a large capacity, is on a fairly small site. This is a fully modern, well maintained hotel in great shape with ameneties that exceeded my expectations. Our room was very clean, large and well appointed, and had a wonderful large balcony. The views from all rooms look out on the ocean and were spectacular. Great beds, lots of hot water and comforable AC with no mold smell.

Staff
I sometimes get the feeling, in resorts in less advantaged countries, that beneath the smile and the freindly greetings of the staff, that there is a certain resentment; an unhappiness that makes me feel like I really shouldn't be there. I end up with peculiar feeling of both identification and guilt; of wanting to enjoy my vacation and wanting to leave. I'd have to say that my stay at Cozumeleno never produced any such feelings.
The staff at El Coz are truly remarkable; freindly, courteous, sensitive and helpful. In El Coz I never felt like I had a dollar sign printed on my forehead. Thank-you, to both the management and the staff at El Coz for sparing me any mixed blessings.

Food
Well...... Here it is.
Good.... most of the time. Sometimes not very good. Sometimes really good. Never great. It's easy to see why there is such a range of opinion on the food here. The Mexican food here ranges from alright to really good. Other foods range from not very good to alright. The quality of ingredients is really good, but lacking a real chef hurts El Coz in almost all areas of food quality. Both the buffet and the A La carte were outstanding in service but, at best, inconsistent with food. Breakfast was the only meal I did't feel was lacking, but there is no expresso at the resort until dinnner, and only at the A La Carte restaurant.

Diving and Snorkeling.
I have always felt that Coz was a pretty poor snorklelling destination to begin with but, that being said, the snorkelling in front of the resort is as good as any on the island. Forget about Chankanaab and any paid spots ( including the 3 reef tour) and just get yourself into the water at the resort dive shop and head south. I was surprised at how good it was...and unlike everything else on Coz now, it's free!
The scuba diving is outsourced to Scuba Doo at the Presidente hotel, a half hour to the south. If there are more than 6 Divers at the Coz who want to do the 2 tank morning dive, a scubadoo boat will pick you up at the hotel dock for an hour long boat ride to Palancar (Drag). Dive is roughly 35 bucks per dive ( $70 for 2 tank trip) plus tip. Count on leaving at 9 and getting back at 2:30. Less than 6 divers and the dive shop pays round trip for a cab to the Presidente. There is a single tank afternoon dive as well, but its not worth it as you have the 2 hour travel time and have to pay for your own cab to Presidente which can be 40 bucks round trip. Shore diving is available from El Coz but theres nowhere to go. Currents are strong up here in the north and the boat lane is not far from shore. Diving here is pretty regimented and the schedule is set for the week and is the same every week, with different sites set for each weekday. You may find more varied and challanging diving by using a different dive shop, but expect to pay. There are no Dive ops which pick up at the hotels north of town and you will have to taxi both ways, adding about 10 bucks minimum per trip. I found the dive shop att EL Coz really freindly and proffessional. Antonio, who manages things, was as accomodating as he could be, was 100 per cent reliable and trustworthy. Scubadoo is extremely safety oriented and well run.
The only problem with a big op like Subadoo is that you may have a different Divemaster on every dive and have to redemonstrate your skill level with every one, and on every dive, before they trust you not to kill yourself. Even advanced divers and divemasters might be asked if they knew how do a safety stop. I think a little better communication between divemasters and Antonio would help.
On the other hand, I dove with a few "advanced divers" who looked like they could drown snorkelling on a beach dive.

All I can say is... the reefs and the diving on Cozumel is almost as spectacular as it has ever been. However; with the introduction of the Cuise Ships, everything on cozumel is starting to feel a little cookie cutter, including the diving. If this was solely a dive trip for me... I would consider different accomodations. Perhaps an entirely new destination.

None the less, this is a great resort with a little bit of everything. I would definately return to El Cozumeleno if Cozumel was my destination.

My wife and i just came back from El Cozumeleno and our saty was great. the food wasn't bad and there was a selection. We chose to venture into town for dinner at night for a little more variety. The hotel has lots to do, you just can't be a bump on a log. The dive shop at the hotel is amazing for keeping you informed on what is going on and the service was amazing. snorkling is fabulous and if but as any fish person knows the real colourful fish will be out on the reefs not close to shore. If your looking for the real party scene this is not for you unless you are willing to venture out. The city life went on all night long and the people in town were great. I would rate this as a top notch hotel for anyone.

We just returned from a 5 day stay at El Coz. Despite some periods of high wind and rain, we enjoyed our stay here.
This resort in neither sophisticated nor elegant. It's well maintained, the staff is warm and friendly and attentive. The grounds are lovely. There are two pools and two hot tubs. The hot tubs were not especially warm.

Beach Area: Near the water, the beach is a bit rocky, making entry a bit challenging, but everyone seems to manage it. There were plenty of beach chairs and palapas. Palapas might become a little scarce when it's busy but that's true everywhere. There are also some comfy hammocks on the beach. Snorkeling was OK; the water is wonderfully clear and we did see several kinds of fish. But without a reef, don't expect to see the colorful variety of fishes that you see in snorkeling brochures. The sand on the beach is kind of medium-coarse; easy enough to walk on barefoot, but not that incredibly soft sand that feels so good on your feet. That kind of sand is on the east side beaches. And in front of the (Sol?) Melia resort, next door.
We walked north along the beach for quite a ways and encountered both rocky and sandy terrain, so a pair of flip-flops would be handy if you want to do that. It was very pleasant.

Room: Our air-conditioned, king bed room was spacious and clean, with a great view of the pool and ocean. As we discovered in a different resort, the bed was hard, but we slept well.
The hotel is right on the beach so you hear the ocean, the kids in the pool; you're room may feel rather damp sometimes, and you'll have a great view.

Food: We weren't expecting great food from an AI buffet and indeed, it's not great. That said, we certainly did not go hungry. But I wish someone would introduce the chef to herbs and spices; the fare was very bland. There is a full service, dinner only, restaurant where the food was quite good and we should have eaten there more frequently, but that would have required wearing slacks and "doing my hair"... You don't need to really dress up, but somehow wearing a ball cap while sitting at a table with a white tablecloth just didn't seem right. You need to make a reservation, and I think you can eat there every night if you wish.

Having walked the beach in both directions from the hotel, it looked like the El Coz had the best all-around beach in the vicinity. It certainly had the clearest water.

This was our first visit to Cozumel and I think we'll try a couple of other resorts in the future. But it wouldn't at all surprise me if we went back to the El Cozumeleno. It's a really easy place to be.

Six of us just returned from 8 days at El Cozumeleno. The hotel had been severely damaged from the huricane, but now everything is repaired and new. We had beautiful oceanview rooms that faced toward Playa Del Carmen. The staff couldn't have been more friendly and helpful. As previously posted on Tripadvisor by others, the beach is a bit rocky. But once in the water, there are plenty of fish to see while snorkeling. I'm certain that we will return there next year.

We had a great vacation in Cozumel last month. We stayed 3 nights at ElCozmeleno and 4 nights at Casa Martillo. We dove 6 days with Albatros Charters.
The Accommodations
El Coz is a very nice all inclusive resort. We stayed there for 3 nights becauGreat trip to Cozumel last month! We stayed 3 nights at the El Cozumeleno and the last se we were traveling with some friends who insisted that they stay at a beach resort. The good news was that we only had to stay 3 nights. Their trip as only 4 days.
Checking in was no problem, we dropped off our luggage and had a drink while standing in the warm water. Our agreement with our friends was that we would eat dinner in town every night.
Our had the best view overlooking the ocean. It also overlooked the pool area. Our early to bed evening was disturbed by loud music, our naps in the late afternoon were accompanied by bingo all taking place in the pool area below our window.
Aside from that, we enjoyed having a nice breakfast before diving and we enjoyed having an open bar whenever we were thirsty
Casa Martillo is a great condo in the Corpus Christi area of Sam Miguel. We had a 1 bedroom condo with a full kitchen, maid service everyday a pool and washer and dryer. We find it quiet and comfortable and our favorite place to stay in Cozumel.
The Food
Our first night we had dinner at El Pique. Great dinner, its one of our favorite Cozumel restaurants.
We tried to have dinner at the new steak house on the corner of 5 and 6 but it was closed so we had dinner at LaChoza. Great food, exciting evening! A local couple became engaged. We got the blow by blow description of just was was going on by the waiter. Lots of music, tears and kisses. She said yes!
We did manage to have dinner with a friend at that new steak house. It was reasonable and just delicious. We all had a steak and grilled veggies along with a bottle of wine.
In addition we had dinner at Especias, which was a bit of a disappointment and the new La Lobstereia which was excellent,
The Diving
We have been diving with Albatros Charters for a few years now. We have always been thrilled with the service, this trip was no exception.
All week we had Elias as our boat captain on the Libra. He was always there when we surfaced, did a great job setting up and changing our tanks as well as providing us on board entertainment. He could not have been any better!
The Libra is a nice small dive boat. We had 7 divers one day and did not feel crowded. It is kept in the marina north of town. We met them at the marina and picked up a couple at the Palace a few days and a then small group at Costa Del Sole the other days then headed south to dive.
We dove with Burak, Edwin and Laura as dive masters all week. They all let us dive our computers. We had bottom times anywhere from 50 -90 minutes for each dive. They were all great at pointing out critters of interest. Our SI were sometimes tied up to a pier or anchored close to shore so that we could wade ashore, go for a swim or just relax. Snacks and water were provided.
A Cedral Pass, we saw a nurse shark aggressively going after something under a large piece of coral. A friend took some pictures that I will try and include. In the 10 years that I have been diving, I have never seen a nurse shark do anything more than sleep under a rock or coral.

We dove the sites we wanted to dive including Columbia Deep, Shallows, Palancar Bricks, Garden, Cedral Pass, Santa Rosa Delilia, La Francesca, and Punta Tunich. All were fantastic.
We had a great time with Rita, Burak and their team of dive masters as well as Elias their captain. They all really took great care of us. We have no reason to dive with anyone else when we visit Cozumel.

The Hospital
Had a slight accident and broke my toe! We went to Medica San Miguel on 6. I am to embarrassed to tell you how I did it but I must say it was a real “blonde” moment. The doctor was great, he spoke some English but my husband is fluent in Spanish. Took some x-rays, taped up my toes and only charged $130. I was able to dive the next day!

We cannot wait to get back to Cozumel soon. With my husbands work schedule it might not be until early spring. I don’t think we would change a thing we did on this trip with the exception of the broken toe!
