My friend and I just returned from 5 days at the Fiesta Americana Dive Resort. We chose the Fiesta Americana because of its affilitation with Dive House and we were very pleased with both the hotel and the dive operation.
The Hotel: We stayed in a casita and it was nice and pretty, but not at all fancy. The bathroom was large, with a nice tub. The casitas do not have an ocean view. In fact, the view is the only drawback. We basically looked out on an unmown lot with hurricane damage. The casita was clean, and kept clean during our visit. It was also well-conditioned and had a large tv, although we did not watch the tv at all. many other reviews complained that the beds were too hard. Our beds were perfectly comfortable and had plenty of pillows. You can also drink the water at the hotel..
The Food: We opted for the all-inclusive plan, because it seemed like a good deal. It was, especially if you like to lie on the beach and have a cold beverage. My firend fell in love with the Miami Vices (half strawberry daquiri, half pina colada) and I drank alot of cunga (mixed fruit punch) and our bar bill would have been hefty if we were not on the AI plan. We only ate breakfast and lunch at the hotel; we went into town every night for dinner. Breakfast was fine for our needs, lots of fresh fruit, yogurt, granola and baked goods. There was also a large steam table full of breakfast foods but we didn't try any of those. There was also a cook making omelettes to order. For lunch, we ordered off the menu. The selections were limited but quite good. I especially liked the chicken flautas and the arrachera a la parilla. The chips and guacamole were also wonderful. There is a buffet at lunch, but we didn't try it. If you go into town, I recommend La Coqay for dinner. Nicely elegant with unusual and delicious menu selections for a very reasonsable price. I do not recommend Las Tortugas, which was overpriced and the seafood, while tasty, was very tough.
The Diving: I had not been diving in Cozumel for about 8 years and it was sad to see all of the dead coral resulting from the recent hurricanes. In spite of that, the diving was very good. I saw a toad fish, the biggest moray eel I have ever seen (its head was bigger than mine), some huge crabs and lobsters, a nice little nudibranch as well as flamingo tongues, lots of arrow crabs ,of course, and one truly enormous turtle. I also saw a seahorse, which I had never seen in Cozumel before. There is a barracuda who hangs out jus off the beach and he will swim with you if you go out and paddle around there. The sea anemones are coming back and there are still plenty of sponges.
You couldn't ask for a better-organized or nicer dive operation than Dive House. The dive masters are helpful, but not hovering. The boats are well-equipped and quick to find you when you surface. They are also less expensive than many other dive operations in Cozumel. I have been diving with them before and will certainly dive with them again.
All-in-all, great time, no complaints!
