I stayed at this hotel with two of my girlfriends (aged early to mid thirties for the record!) from 23-30th March. We had booked a five day diving package and found this in particular, to be very good value for money.
We had transfers to and from the hotel and found that we were treated very kindly on arrival at the hotel. We had wanted rooms next to each other and after a small wait, our wish was granted!
The rooms were clean, well equipped and with great views of the ocean - I believe all of the hotel rooms have similar views. There is a goody basket in your room which you pay for. I thought it was relatively good value for money, in fact, the bug spray was more expensive in the hotel gift shop, for example!
We decided on the all-inclusive which I found to be well worth it. I usually don't go for the all-inclusive as it can be a bit of a gamble but I found on this occasion that the food was above average. Breakfast in particular was very good. Dinner was okay but then again we did eat out on two of our six nights, to break it up a bit. There is a second restaurant upstairs but I found the buffet in the main restaurant to be a bit better.
The chef in the restaurant at lunchtime was wonderful and if you asked him, he would make you up a special dish just for you. I guess it wasn’t that busy but all the same, I was very impressed with this level of service.
One of the last reviewers talked about divers being too tired /hungry to care what they ate when they came back from diving???!! I can assure them and you, that I do so very much care what I eat! If anything, I am quite a fussy eater and especially after a long day out at sea, we really looked forward to our lunch/ evening meals . At all times, I found there to be a good selection of fresh salad, breads, meats etc, hot and cold food and snacks available at all times. The staff were always helpful and were tipped accordingly! Strangely, some people seemed to believe that because it was an all inclusive package, that there was no need to tip?! I can assure you that the mostly Mexican staff, all of whom were polite, friendly and courteous were very appreciative of being rewarded for good service.
It is fair to say that this resort would primarily suit divers. We love to party but on this trip, we were consumed by the diving. It would probably be too quiet and too far from town for those who were looking for a bit more action. I must say however that we loved to have a few cocktails in the evening, which were delicious, especially the Daiquiris! And of course there were always a few divers around the bar that you could relive your underwater experiences with (boring I know!!!)
There are two pools. We only ever lounged by the one closest to the Dive House which was quieter and had the sea views. The one closer to the hotel had live entertainment during the day. Too wild for us after our sea excursions…
I had a massage at the hotel spa one day which wasn’t the greatest. I mean, it did the job (got rid of the stress in my neck) but I found the business itself to be a bit under run and there were about four interruptions during the massage which was quite off putting. Also I have just realized that they have charged me $800 instead of $80… which I am now having to sort out… grr..
Again, it isn’t a party hotel. If you are looking to dive, then it is a great place to stay, we were quite tired after dinner each evening, so went to bed early. Two evenings however, we popped into the town (taxi $7). We ate at Prima Pizza which was had good Italian food. We also got a ferry over to the mainland (Playa Del Carmen) and ate at a fine Mexican restaurant called La Parrilla (recommended to us by our Dive Master). It was quite buzzy but very touristy, with lots of places to shop if you were looking for the usual holiday gifts…
For the Divers: We hadn’t been diving in quite some time so took a refresher course on our second day, which was the perfect re-introduction to diving. Our instructor was Javier, who was full of charm and good spirits. He took us out two of the other three days also and was always on hand to point us in the direction of turtles/ sharks/ eels and other exotic aquatic life. While we were here we also completed our advanced open water which was well worth the money and experience.
All in all, I found the hotel to be very good value for money. You must remember that you are staying in a 3 ½ star hotel (by European standards). Well, that is the price you are paying, in any event. If you expect 5 star, then pay that price. We got a very good deal and heard very good things about the Dive House which was what attracted us to the hotel. I also found most of the reviewers on this site to be accurate in their findings Naturally you will always find those who will find something to moan about!
I guess if we were not going to dive, then we would possibly have stayed at a more up market / closer to the action hotel, which had more facilities / late night entertainment etc..
Hope this helps!
