We arrived at the FA on July 23, 2004 for a seven night all-inclusive vacation. We paid extra for the Tropical Casita which was represented as beach access and a "Exclusive" area of the hotel. Upon arrival we waited in line for nearly an hour with only one hotel reception person working the front desk. She went on break and was replaced with another lone worker, despite a line that was getting longer. I travel a great deal on business and I have never seen such a disrespect for customers - - I didn't realize just how bad the service would get. So, we were provided our "Tropical Casita" room and then took a 400+ yard walk behind the hotel to the "Exclusive" area. The stench of raw sewge was overwhelming as we took the long stroll to our room. There was a ramshackle building on the outer boundry of the complex where trash and debris were scattered around the jungle. Clouds of hungry mosquitos attacked us as we made our migration to the room that turned out to be in the jungle behind the main hotel. I paid nearly $ 400 more for this? The room was large but a huge concrete cabinet occupied the majority of the space and we ended up with actually less space than the rooms in the main hotel for our 2 kids (7 and 9) that accompanied us. We discovered at the room that nothing in the refrigerator or none of the snacks were included in our "All-Inclusive" trip - - even the mosquito repellent (which was absolutely mandatory for a trip outside the room into the "Jungle") was a chargable item
We went to the lunch restaurant and reviewed the buffet that was literally covered and crawling with flies. The selections were worse than the slop I made myself in college and I wondered if the hotel had subcontraced with some of the local peasants to bring in the food!! It was really that bad! My kids refused to eat the food and I decided to try to get something that was sealed in a containter. The yogurt was all of of date and we decided to wait until dinner. Many of the same dried out and "walked-on" items from lunch reappeared on the dinner buffet - - re-treading at its finest!
Dinner wasn't much better and the dessert trays were literally covered with flying ants that had gotten "Stuck" in the dessert sauces. It was quite amusing to watch the lizards at night around the lights of the dining hall. They would eat the insects and the discarded insect parts (wings, legs, etc) would fall around the bar and dessert area! Nasty, but my kids got a kick watching the National Geographic spectacle.
We made a determination to make the best of it on our first night and keep a glass half-full outlook on our situation. On the second morning my son cut his ankle on the razor sharp tile in the kids pool. The cut was nearly 2 inches long and very deep (could see muscle and tendons) on his ankle. The pool staff arrived, bandanged the ankle and left. I came back from the beach and asked my wife what had happened and she said that the hotel informed us to take a cab to the hospital to get the ankle fixed. I investigated the area in the pool and did discover the razor sharp 3 inch area. Another guest came up to me during that time and stated that my son was the 6th person she had seen get "Cut" in the pool since her arrival that Sunday (4 days prior). I informed the manager at the front desk about the injury and told him that he needed to do more for us. We spent the day at the pre-arranged medical clinic getting the ankle sewn up and then spent the next 3 days rolling our son around in a wheel chair (that the hotel gladly furnished for us). The last 2 days of our vacation my son was able to walk with a great deal of pain (but no wheel-chair) since another guest required it - -hummmmmm?
I found the service most of the times mocking and disrespectful. I've read the other reports on this web site and wonder how anyone can give this hotel more than a 2 rating??
The Fiesta Americana configured the bars and restaurants to penalyze the all-inclusive crowd, the open/close times of restaurants were not followed. As far as the hotel - the air conditioners were of 1970 vintage and were loud and droned on through the night. We moved to the main hotel since the long walk with the wheel-chair became cumbersome. At the main hotel we had an air conditioner that had a large gap in it where you could actually see through to the outside! The next morning we all had about 30 mosquito bites and I'm surprised that we don't have malaria. The stench of raw sewage permeated the Tropical Casita complex and also came into the room in the main hotel through an open drain on the bathroom floor. I am a diver and usually left at 7:00 am and returned at 11:30 so I was able to enjoy at least a portion of my vacation. My wife and kids had to suffer through the whole misery of it all at the Fiesta Americana.
The kids enjoyed playing pool at night in the hotel lobby which was really the only activity available besides a pint-sized ping pong table played on slick tile. Live flying bats would cruise through the lobby area in the evening. Also, floors in the lobby would become greased lightning slick when wet and I saw one boy get severely injured when he did a full-on head plant that you could actually feel in your feet from across the room. Wet bathers had to traverse through the main lobby to get to their rooms (and the Tropical Casita) and no matter how hard they tried, the hotel staff could not keep the floors dry and I wondered why they would not use some type of non-slip tile in an area like that?
Be prepared to sign for everything you get and the big print giveth and the fine print taketh away on the list of "Not-Included" items. After the 3rd day of eating the "Slop" we all got stomach bugs. They would only give us one roll of toilet paper and we requested numerous times that it be replentished to no avail. I found myself sneaking into the supply room downstairs to get the items like soap, shampoo, and toilet paper since they left only one each for four people staying in the room.
Top this all off with the worst hotel service that I've ever experienced in my 17 years of traveling and you pretty much have your worst vacation nightmare situation that you can ever imagine. The only staff member worth a tip was a nice older gentlemen who worked the beach near the rental shack - - the only one!
I wish I would have know about this review web-site before booking my trip. If you are going to Cozumel - - don't waste your dollars, vacation time, or minutes staying at the Fiesta Americana!!!!
