my wife and i are avid, experienced divers who have traveled extensively throughout the carribean, central america and south pacific. it's also been about 12 years since we have been to cozumel and thought we'd appreciate the conveinence of a short flight and to give cozumel another shot. in our opinion, the fiesta americana resort is in a perfect location. a six dollar (u.s.) cab ride to town yet far enough away to keep it quiet and not too far from all the prominent dive sites. our room was above average in cleanliness and decor (for mexico) and the air conditioner worked flawlessly. if you want a view of the ocean, ask for 5th floor or above. we were on the 6th and pleased with the location. the greater hotel area and pool are beautiful and well maintained. there is no beach in front of the hotel but a nice sandy area replete with palapas and lounge chairs. there is access to the ocean but don't expect a "beach." do not use the mini-bar. everything was rediculously over-priced. go to the "chedraui" superstore in town and get your litre bottles of water for 43 cents instead of $3.00 u.s. at the hotel. we only had the breakfast plan as we looked forward to trying different restaurants in town. we still had about three lunches at fiesta and about two dinners and the food was suprisingly good. service was freindly and efficient as well. don't expect value at fiesta's restaurant's or bars. prices are equal to the u.s. or higher. being on a meal plan will probably save you money and is efficient but in our experience boring if you have choices and there are some excellent choices in town. more on that later. the dive operation on it's premises ("dive house") is decent enough and even has dive lockers but are unfortunately on the small side. bring a small padlock with you or you'll have to purchase one there for $5.00....if they have one in stock. dive boats were uncrowded but we were there in the low season. we were there from june 15th thru the 25th of 2003. dive masters were adequate but language was a stumbling block. one was japanese with little english capability and the other mexican with very little english spoken. one out of the three dive masters we had adequately explained dive sites, planning, safety features, etc. diving was just so-so. cozumel is simply over-dove with as many as 15 dive boats coverging on some sites. fish life is just so-so as well. we did 19 dives in 8 days of diving and would categorize the diving as unremarkable compared to other carribean or central american dive locations we've been to. water was a very warm 84 degrees at the surface but the vis was maybe 70 to 80 ft at best. three restaurants in town that we can enthusiastically recommend. "prima", "la choza" and "la mission." an emphasis will be put on "prima," it was simply fantastic. there a dark side creeping into cozumel though. a nasty aggressiveness on some of the locals. on three seperate occasions, we were baited and switched in regards to menu prices on food or drinks. on one of those occasions, the waiter aggressively demanded a tip from us after ripping us off. some shopkeepers made rude commentary after passing their shops and not stopping in. incessant hectoring from people selling things but now far more aggresive that i recall from three previous trips to cozumel in the past (12 years ago). as many as 8 cruise ships are in port at one time... ugh!!!! even though we enjoyed our trip, it will be our last to cozumel. with places like ambergis caye in belize, roatan in honduras, san salvador in the bahamas, etc, etc., there is far better diving and without the crowds.....like cozumel was about 20 years ago.
