5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2007

We travelled to Cozumel for the 1st time in January 2007 and this hotel was great. We are from Toronto, Canada and this hotel ranks up there with some of the nicest hotels in our city. I would highly recommend this hotel if you want to have a relaxing time with excellent service and friendly staff.

This was our first trip to Cozumel and the first time to a Palace Resort. Both did not dissappoint us. We had a tight connection getting to Cozumel and although we made it ,our bags didn't. Once we checked into the Palace, they were so sensitive to our set back of no luggage, they suprised us by upgrading our room to the honeymoon suite. What a room. We have traveled thru out the caribbean and love the beaches of Aruba and Punta Cana, but did not have the accomodations that the Palace offered. The cleanliness and comfort of the room, the great staff, and the atmosphere of the resort are all reasons to give this a thumbs up. Some people say that since they don't spend their vacation in the room, its not important, but for us it matters. We don't spend a lot of time in the room, but when we are in there we like the comforts of home. A king size bed (like at home), clean spacious rooms (like home), and surrounded by smiles and people that want to make your visit and experience a memorable one. Only wish they had a beach to take a walk on.
We knew this in advance so it was not a suprise, but thats the only thing this resort is lacking.

  • Liked — The upgrade to the honeymoon suite, Huge balcony, 3 bathrooms
  • Disliked — Wish they had a beach

My husband and I stayed 2/9-2/13 at the Cozumel Palace after reading all of the great reviews. We loved it! We've only done AI once before at Sandals in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. We have travelled to Mexico 8 or 9 times though, and have been in Cozumel once before.

To us, the Cozumel Palace was just as expected. It was a nice balance between activity and relaxation, the food was good for an AI, the room was wonderful and the proximity to downtown was great.

Some details I'd like to add after reading the other reviews are as follows...The internet cafe across the street is $2/hr and you can split that hour into as many visits as it takes to use it. Just save your code and return the next day to use remaining time. The internet service at the hotel is $2.50 for 15 minutes. There is wireless internet access at the hotel if you bring your laptop along.

The Asian restaurant was our favorite and we were surprised by the quality of the sushi - very good! The Italian restaurant, aside from the Caprese salad, was our least favorite. Pasta is not the Mexican forte. The fajitas in the Mexican restaurant are great! The food out by the pool each day is delicious. In addition to the grill, they set up a cart each day and make something different over the lunch hour. One day it was tacos, the next paella, the next burgers/hot dogs. Very tasty. Finally, the juices at the breakfast buffet were all fresh squeezed, num.

The liquor dispensers in the room have a bottle of scotch, bacardi, brandy, and Jose Cuervo. The mini fridge has 7Up, Pepsi, Pepsi Light (diet), club soda, and lots of bottled water! Another nice surprise was a freezer compartment in the mini fridge with a mini ice cube tray when you're too lazy to walk down to the ice machine for that last late night cocktail.

All in all, the hotel was pretty quiet. However, the marble floors and the 2 inch gap under our room door made it very loud and echo-y in our room at night. That would be my only complaint. We were in room 436 and on the opposite end of the property from the pool, so we didn't contend with any other noise.

There is free snorkel gear at the activity desk out by the pool, so don't bother packing your own. They also have an assortment of magazines and books to read.

There is a laundromat across from the hotel if you need to do laundry or drycleaning.

We liked the bubble bath by the jacuzzi tub, the wide variety of toiletries (a shaving kit, shoe shine kit, sewing kit etc. in additon to the "usual,") and we thought the fresh grapes/apples and bottle of red wine with opener in our room upon arrival was a nice touch.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2007

We went here the week of February 5th, 2007.

I booked through Yahoo Travel, both flight and hotel, and saved on bundle package. Just bought the shuttle and travel insurance.

Airport is small. Walk down the portable stairs to the tarmac. Pretty simple to find.

WISDOM #1: Inside the terminal, there are people that are in official looking uniforms. They help you find what you need. Extremely helpful and friendly. At the end, they are trying to sell you time shares. Avoid them. They just waste your time.

WISDOM #2: Just go directly out where everyone is going out. You can find you shuttle easily if you booked one. Or if you didn't book a shuttle, there are plenty of taxi's. We booked a shuttle van. They may make stops at other hotels. By the way, for our return to the airport, the shuttle company sends us to the airport in a taxi. Of course, it's already included in your shuttle cost. But of course, you will still have to tip the taxi driver.

The hotel is fantastic. They really do wait hand and foot on you. In the lounge, outside by the pools and at the restaurants. The room is very nice and just as pictured. It's very clean. The restaurants food presentation is premium class. The food taste is about 3.5 our of 5 stars. The snorkeling is right there off the hotel. Plenty of cool fish to see. We even saw a small manta ray like fish. Many colorful fishes. However, many reefs were serverly damaged by recent hurricanes. But still a lot of fishes. For honeymooners, they provide a honeymoon package with special wine, dinner and free t-shirts. Breakfast is by far the best meals. Our lunch at the Italian was very good. Mexican was the best dinner, we thought.

WISDOM #3: For meat lovers, for dinner, they have an outside grill. Excellent ribeye steak. We cancelled our special honeymoon dinner with shrimp to have their fat, juicy, tender ribeye's. It was our best decision.

WISDOM #4: Yes, gratuities are included. We saw some people not pay anything. But peer pressure will pressure you to paying tips $2-$3. I'm much cheapo. But I was peer pressured in paying tips. They will not reject tips. Bring a lotta ones.

The tour packages the hotel offers are good deals. You really don't need to buy it outside of the hotel. Plus, if you want to try other activities, like the submarine, the hotel has a trip planning area where you can book it, at extra cost (for those not already included by the hotel).

We rented a car (at the hotel, book it early) and took a drive around the island. Very quick and quite beautiful on the other side. No real place to park on the east side. Find a nice enough shoulder, park, walk and hope no one hits your car. But beautiful.

You can walk into town. 10 minutes tops. There's also a mini-super-Wal-Mart right across the hotel with merchandise and grocery. But in town, they open something like 9am-8pm, catering mostly to cruisers. Cruise ships come to Cozumel constantly. A taxi back to carry you stuff is $3.

WISDOM #5: Go to shops where there are no price tags, then haggle like the dickens. I haggled nice opan earrings from $80 to $36. If there are price stickers, they won't haggle. Pretend to walk away, if they call for you, then you can haggle some more. Most gift stores, carry pretty much the same merchandise; jewelry, statuettes, trinkets. Buy from where they lower the price the most.

We were only able to take the glass bottom tour. It's a small fishing boat with a small glass window. The boat more takes you to a spot to snorkel for about an hour. There's barely anything to see through the glass. The glass is about 1' x 4'. It should really be called, "Boat with small glass window that takes you to a snorkeling place tour." Hopefully, others can describe other tours.

It did rain every day. Take a compact umbrella just in case. But it's usually short, about 30-60 minutes. But Friday, it did rain most of the day, closing the outdoor grill, losing our ribeyes, and even our evening shopping.

Food on demand. Drinks on demand. Towels on demand. It's great. Nightly fun shows. They even involve a few customers.

There are a lot of people there, even M-F. Music is a bit blaring during the day. We wanted to eat outside, but music is too obnoxiously loud. Mostly older folks, 40's and 50's. Many patrons are Palace Resorts members.

Cons to Cozumel Palace. Blaring day music, no quiet moments by the pool. Peer pressure tipping. Decent food, except breakfast and grill. And the stupid plastic bracelet you have to wear 24/7 to identify you as a Palace patron. It began to feel like I was a prisoner. Even with gratuities included, it appears as if they are expecting tips. They never reject tips.

Other than that, they are really friendly. And it's a snorkelers delight. Very easy to stay at. It's like a bit of paradise. And you can attend other Palace resorts on the mainland.

WISDOM #6: They give a free celebration package to Aventura Spa Hotel on the mainland. It's a half day trip. But we surmised it was the Palace's time share sell. We cancelled. We would suggest to avoid it and save time to do more fun things.

WISDOM #7: Playa Mia, package included, is a beach play area. Great for kids, eating, relaxing. In a way, but it's extremely crowded. And crappy snorkeling, if at all really. We were told shopping there is the best. But the buidings were only 65% finished, the shops were less than 50% filled.

Have a great time at the Cozumel Palace. We would like to try any Palace resorts, just based of this smallest of Palace resorts, sometime in the near future.

We returned from ten fabulous days at the Cozumel Palace on February 5. Everything about this place is great. The service is unbeatable, the food was very good, and the rooms spotless. I truly believe no is not in their vocabulary. We ordered special drinks and and once they understood what you wanted it was never a problem. The snorkeling was very good right off the property and we also took the glass bottom boat tour which was neat, although we didn't see much more than what you could see right from the property. They put on a great spread for Super Bowl complete with munchies, cheerleaders and a pool. The only complaint I would have is that the lobby bar area gets quite smokey in the evening.

We chose to travel to Cozumel because of the extraordinary beaches, snorkeling and small-scale appeal of the island. We hoped to find some peace and quiet. Some romance. Some privacy. Some fun.

Instead, we found the Palace.

I guess if your priority in Mexico is to drink all day long without worrying about your bar tab, then the Palace would be a good place to be. It was really the only reason I could imagine wanting to be there.

- No beach - how did I miss this information on the Palace web site?? Instead, 100s of poolside chairs that were crowded together like they were on the deck of a cruise ship
- Loud, blaring music in the lobby and poolside at all hours of the day
- Extraordinarily loud "entertainment" every night ... right outside your balcony (think stadium concert loud)
- Half-dozen cruise ships parked right offshore of the hotel, totally obliterating the "scenic" ocean view
- A cheap plastic hammock and cheaper plastic chairs on your balcony that weren't remotely comfortable
- Paper-thin doors and echoing hallways that made it sound as though people were walking right through your room as they passed by
- A "room service" menu that literally offered a choice between 2 apps, 2 soups, 2 salads, 2 entrees and 2 desserts ... period

Here's how the Palace earned its single star from me: The room was enormous and spotlessly clean. The bed was very comfortable. The food was bearable.

Otherwise, it was an incredibly stressful, awful place to be. Is this what all AIs feel like? If so, we'll never stay at another one again.

We ended up at the Occidental Allegro, which offers what has to be one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. This resort also has its issues, but at least we were able to enjoy the things we came to see (and hear!) ... the beach, ocean, and each other!

I truly can't believe all the starry-eyed reviews the Palace has received. Ick.

We just got back 2 days ago. I had booked through Cheap Caribbean.com and had requested a upper floor room away from the elevator but I was given a first floor room by the pool(which I did not want). I immediately told the front desk that we wanted a quiet room on the upper floor and they got it for us with out any hastle! I even tried to slip them a 10$ bill to "sweetened" the deal but they were horrified and said they were glad to help and refused the money. I even got a phone call in the room shortly after we got there to make sure the room was to our liking(which it was). If you want quiet, ask for a room on the north end away from the construction and the pool! It's really noisy by the pool.
The service was so good, these people really bust their behinds to take care of you. The food was very good as well, especially in the Italian restaurant. I thought the wine list was good and the alcohol drinks were adequate by the pool and better by the indoor bar.
I did not miss the beach at all. In fact when we did go to a beach club to snorkle, I found I didn't like getting sand in all the neather regions!!
I have stayed in other AI's and I did feel this was a better deal overall and I really liked the location. I know it is hard to please everyone and some people are really picky, but I had very few complaints and I will go back there again. I liked the fact that all the rooms were Ocean view and had jacuzzi's and you did not have to pay to get an upgraded room like you have to do at other resorts. The rooms were beautifull! When we drove around the island and looked at the other hotels, I really didn't see any that struck my fancy. If we go back to Cozumel, we will stay at the Palace again.
